Horace Silver. Mais de son propre aveu, sa
passion l’a ensuite emporté.
Paris (New Morning). « Higher Plane » en 1997, avec David Garibaldi à la batterie
(Tower Of Power), Bobby Vega à la basse (Sly Stone), Mark Russo au saxophone
(Yellowjackets), puis « Make Every Second Count » en 2001, renforcent sa réputation
dans le public et auprès de ses confrères. rad. joue avec Maceo Parker, Sheila E.
ou Bobby Byrd. En 2003, un cd-dvd « Live At The New Morning » paraît, restituant
Hancock).
À ne pas rater !
After a year in Prince’s band New
Power Generation, new motherhood
and a following hiatus rad. returns with
a new album “EAST BABE” and brings
her band to Europe in Spring 2007.
San Francisco Bay Area Singer-
Songwriter native Rose Ann Dimalanta,
aka rad., has built a loyal following
since she arrived on the scene with her
solo project in the early 90’s. Joined
by a tastefully chosen cast of top
notch musicians, her electrifying performances
effortlessly ease through
R&B, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and Jazz
styles topped with incredibly pumping
funk jams often driven by the rhythm
section of the legendary band Tower
of Power.
A rad. live show is always a truly musical
experience fueled with the depth of
the individual players in the band and
of course rad.’s own hair raising piano
solos. Rad. is steeped in the tradition
of the San Francisco Bay Area music
scene which has brought about the
likes of Santana, Tower of Power or
Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters.
rad. follows this tradition of blending
Jazz and Funk with the Latino and
Chicano influences of Northern California. Dubbed by a fan as an “out of body experience”
rad. live always delivers a unique show that many consider to be among the best the West
Coast has to offer at the dawn of the new millennium.
ad. began playing piano at the age of 4 which ultimately led to her jazz studies at U.C.
Berkeley, where she became the president of the Jazz department in the late 80’s. The
San Francisco Bay Area environment allowed her to grow up playing with legendary musicians
like Pete Escovedo (Santana), Benny Velarde (Cal Tjader), Sheila E., Orestes Vilató
(Santana), Ray Obiedo (Herbie Hancock, George Duke), and David Garibaldi (Tower of
Power), among others.
Her debut LP “radified” (1992) catapulted rad. into the spotlight as a solo artist. It’s hit single
“Wishy” took European dancefloor charts by storm and received “Album of the Month”
awards in many prominent music publications throughout Europe. “Gotta Be”(1994) the
second release, was praised by critics, DJ’s and fans alike. It’s release in Japan put the
track “Venus Drops”, featuring the Tower of Power Horns into the Japanese Billboard
Radio charts.
Guest appearances on “Gotta Be” by Tower of Power, funk legend Roger Troutman (Zapp)
and respected Jazz heavies like Howard Johnson (Miles Davis, Carla Bley) broadened
her musical acceptance beyond dance, r&b, and jazz audiences. 1997 brought the third
CD entitled “Higher Plane”, recorded at the legendary Fantasy Studios and featuring an
all-star cast including David Garibaldi on drums, Bobby Vega (Sly Stone) on bass, Mark
Russo (Yellowjackets) on saxophone, etc. Her fourth studio album “Make Every Second
Count” was released in 2001.
rad. repeatedly sold out London’s Jazz Café and Paris’ New Morning & Hot Brass Club,
and toured extensively in Germany, UK, Switzerland, France, Italy and Japan. She has
shared the stage with such luminaries as Incognito, Maceo Parker, Carleen Anderson,
Sheila E., and ex-James Brown’s right hand man Bobby Byrd. She performed in San
Francisco for the United Nations 50th Anniversary Celebration-Festival and in the same
year co-hosted the popular “Groove” show on VH1 Europe. She has sold over 50,000 CDs
in Europe alone.
In Fall 2002 a Swiss film team made a movie of a rad. Performance at the New Morning
in Paris for French Television. The performance was also released as a live CD “Live at
the New Morning, Paris” in 2003.
rad.’s latest album “East Babe” features a stellar cast of East Bay Funk Musicians. Music
critics gave it an ecstatic response upon the first mail out and welcomed the release as
marking a return of hand made funk music in the 21st century.
Eric Leeds
Born in Milwaukee, Eric Leeds spent most of
his formative years in Pittsburgh. He first picked
up saxophone at the age of eleven, soaking
up a wide spectrum of R&B, Latin music and
jazz, with an emphasis on the latter. Enrolling
in Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University School of
Music, Leeds spent two years getting a firm
musical grounding while continuing his jazz
studies with saxophone great Eric Kloss. Striking
out on his own in a series of local groups, Leeds
soon made a name for himself on the city’s thriving
club scene. In the early 80’s, he relocated to
Atlanta where he spent two years exploring the
city’s rich musical heritage.
It was then that opportunity knocked when, after a trip to Minneapolis, he was introduced
to Prince, who had heard one of Leeds’ demo tapes. The star was in the process of putting
a new group and, impressed my Eric’s singular saxophone skills, offered him a spot in
the line-up. The result was The Family. A promising debut album of the same name was
released in 1985 and featured the Top Ten single, “Screams of Passion”.
Leeds went to work in the studio and onstage with Prince, including four worldwide tours
and performances on such Prince albums as “Parade”, “Sign O’ The Times”, “Lovesexy’,
“Batman”, and the DVD release “Prince Live at the Aladdin, Las Vegas”. The eventual
result of all this musical interplay was another prestigious venture, Madhouse. The group’s
two instrumental albums featured not only Leeds’ propulsive jazz playing (on tenor, and
baritone saxes, and flute), but his writing and arranging as well. As the group’s leader, Eric
played some of Europe’s best known clubs, including New Morning in Paris, Quasimodo
in Berlin, Munich’s Park Caf\’8e, and Fasching in Stockholm.
In 1989, Eric and Prince got together to begin a pre-production on a third Madhouse offering.
Prince’s previous commitments left the bulk of the recording and producing chores to
Leeds. When it became evident that what was to be a Madhouse album was turning into
a vehicle for Eric’s own musical imagination, he set about creating what would become a
genuine showcase for his talents.
The result was Times Squared, an effort that landed Leeds squarely in the front ranks of
jazz’s most accomplished practitioners. The release of Times Squared was followed by a
Midwestern tour with his newly formed road band. Returning home, Leed’s next project
was composing and perform-ing music for an independent Canadian feature film, Giant
Steps, starring Billy Dee Williams. The film was subsequently screened at Lincoln Center
in conjunction with the prestigious Thelonius Monk Jazz Competition.
Eric also found time to play on recording projects for a diverse assortment of artists,
including Miles Davis, Jimmy McGriff, George Benson, Sheila E., Chaka Khan, George
Clinton, Patti LAbelle, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Wendy and Lisa, Mavis Staples,
Ricky Peterson, Latin-jazz trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda, guitarist Clay Moore, and the
award -winning soundtrack for the documentary Hoop Dreams.
Eric’s solo album continued where Times Squared left off. Entitled Things Left Unsaid,
it included original material as well as some
impeccably selected covers. Co-produced by Gil
Goldstein, it featured a rhythm section of Weather
Report alumni such as drummer/percussionist
Alex Acuna, bassist Alfonso Johnson, and percussionist/vocalist
Mino Cinelu. Also featured was
a brass section of trumpeters Charlie Sepulveda
and Bria Lynch, and trombonist Conrad Herwig,
at the core of Eddie Palmieri’s horn section.
In 1994, along with the aforementioned Charlie
Sepulveda became charter members with Sheila
E. in the Latin-jazz/funk band E Train. Touring
has included performances at the House of Blues
in LA, Boston and New Orleans, and many major
jazz venues throughout the US and Europe.
Three tours of Japan featured visits to the Blue
Note clubs in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka. The
groups’ recording “Writes of Passage” includes
compositions by Leeds (the title track) and other members of the group.
Eric has also been involved in a project called the Minneapolis All-Stars. Band members
include Ricky Peterson on keyboards (David Sanborn’s musical director), his brother Paul
on bass and vocalist (also lead vocalist for The Family) and Janet Jackson guitarist Dave
Barry. Group activity has included touring, music-school seminars and a live album, The
Minneapolis All-Stars Live at the Quest.
Other performances by Eric have included stints in New York at Sweet Basil’s jazz club
with Charlie Sepulveda and at Minneapolis’ Dakota Bar with trumpeter Brian Lynch and
award-winning organist Melvin Rhyme. For the past several years, Eric has also been
a steady member of the Latin-jazz band led by vocalist-percussionist Estaire Godinez
(percussionist with George Benson). Other club appearances have included stints with
guitarist Clay Moore.
Eric’s third solo album Now and Again, recorded for Zinc productions features original
compositions and a band including Ricky Peterson and former Prince drummer Michael
Bland. Recent recording projects also included Eric’s appearance on Clay Moore’s
Damelo.
Eric recently toured again with his former “boss” Prince in a band that included Eric’s
long-time friend and mentor, Maceo Parker, that culminated in the DVD “Prince Live at
the Aladdin, Las Vegas”.
Ray
Obiedo
Already as a child growing
up in the East Bay,
Obiedo recognized his own
profoundly soulful musical
connection to the Northern
California region and its
eclectic blend of exotic
multi-ethnic rhythms. Small
wonder indeed, many years
and successful albums later. Ray has steadily emerged as one the most originally expressive
and exciting contemporary jazz talents of the decade with a delightfully distinct Bay
Area flavor thoroughly marinating his personal jazz signature and nationwide festival performances.
“Among my favorite childhood memories,” Obiedo recalls while relaxing at his selfowned
Werewolf Recording Studios in the Oakland Hills, were those numerous trips
across the bay to places like the Fillmore Auditorium, Winterland Auditorium, and Golden
Gate Park to hear some of the greatest rock bands around. Everyone from Jimi Hendrix,
Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead to the great Isaac Hayes and Sly Stone. It
was exciting, inspirational and vibrantly alive. For musicians interested in exploring and
creating new sounds, it was absolutely the place to be.”
Although Obiedo didn’t begin seriously studying guitar until his last year in high school,
the deep jazz influences of artist like Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, and Antonio Carlos
Jobin had already been intricately woven into his musical soul. Even the raw soul of the
great James Brown became an indelible component of Obiedo’s musical signature.
As Obiedo became totally focused on mastering his instrument and learning the craft of
songwriting throughout the 70’s and 80’s, brightly promising career as a professional jazz
artist began taking form. His reputation for musical excellence and creative performance
was quickly becoming acknowledged and respected throughout his beloved Bay Area
music community.
Obiedo was soon performing with many of the jazz community’s most celebrated stars
including legendary jazz organist Johnny “Hammond” Smith, trombonist Julian Priester,
Azteca featuring Pete & Sheila Escovedo, Fourplays’ Harvey Mason.
A world tour in 1978-79 with jazz superstar Herbie Hancock is still one of Ray‘s most
treasured musical memories.
Ray found time in between his stints as side man to lead such popular local bands as
the fusion ensemble Kick (featuring drummer Sheila E and longtime Sonny Rollins pianist
Mark Soskin) and the funk-rock group Rhythmus 21 which showcased many of the Bay
Area’s leading singers.
As a session player, Ray’s guitar work has been nicely presented on albums by artists
as diverse as Lou Rawls, George Duke, Brenda Russell, Herbie Hancock, Sheila E &
the E Train, Freda Payne, The Whispers,
The Braxton Bros, The Delfonics as well
as solo albums by jazz trumpeter Eddie
Henderson, former Yellowjackets’ saxophonist
Marc Russo and Meters drummer
Zigaboo Modeliste. It was also Obiedo’s
memorable guitar solo that so sweetly highlighted
sax star Grover Washington Jr’s
most recent hit cover of the classic single
“Soulful Strut”.
Eventually launching his own solo recording
career on the Windham Hill Jazz label,
Obiedo recorded and released no less
than five contemporary jazz albums over
the following few years to steadily increasing
levels of critical praise and commercial
success.
Beginning with his debut C D “Perfect
Crime”, through “Iguana”, “Sticks &
Stones”, “Zulaya” and “Sweet Summer
Days”, Obiedo has consistently remained
loyal to his rhythm and blues roots while
also sharpening his Afro-funk instincts and
highlighting his natural flair for utterly infectious
pop and Latin / Brasilian grooves.
As a result, he has both discovered and
cultivated a fiercely devoted international
following.
Typical of Obiedo’s album successes was his “Sticks & Stones” C D which peaked at
No. 7 on Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart and remained in the top 25 for more than 10
weeks. It also scored as high as No. 5 on the Radio & Records N A C chart and the Gavin
Report adult alternative chart in addition to placing in the Top 20 on the GavinReport.
Currently appearing with Obiedo on his latest release ”Modern World” are a number of
all-star jazz luminaries including Yellowjackets’ saxophonist Bob Mintzer, steel pan master
Andy Narell, and Santana percussionist Karl Perazzo. Joining Ray in the only non-original
cut, Henry Mancini’s “Slow Hot Wind”, is undoubtedly one the most respected musicians
in the world, harmonica great Jean “Toots“ Thielemans.
Like one of his idols Henry Mancini, Obiedo’s music has found it’s way to the silver
screen. Ray has contributed source music to major motion pictures “Internal Affairs” starring
Richard Gere and “A Shock to the System” starring Michael Caine. Ray also collaborated
with singer/songwriter Teresa Trull for the soundtrack to Nicloe Conn’s “Claire of the
Moon”. Obiedo further established and solidified his compositional credentials by writing
successful songs for other musical performers, Sheila E, The Pete Escovedo Orquestra,
The Whispers, Linda Tillery, Gwen Mc Crae, guitarist Bruce Forman, Tower of Power,
Andy Narell, saxophonist Marion Meadows, master funk drummer David Garibaldi, and
percussionist Bill Summers.
In recent years, Ray has concentrated heavily on his production skills. In addition to producing
his own album projects, he has produced a variety of independently released CD’s.
Obiedo co-produced guitarist Joyce Cooling’s 1997’s highly successful release “Playing it
Cool” for Heads Up Records and keyboardist Tom Grant’s 1999’s “Tune It In” for Windhill
Jazz Records.
Recent tours as a sideman have included a U.S. run with The Pee Wee Ellis / Fred
Wesley Group and a 2001 Japan tour with Sheila E & the E Train, besides multiple tours
to Europe with rad.
Ray Obiedo is a highly energized and hypnotically rhythmic soundscape revealing all
the passion, flavor, color, and style of the Northern California region which conceived,
nourished and inspired the musical soul of this fascinating and prolific jazz artist.
Billy Johnson
Billy Johnson was born in Philadelphia, and was
the beneficiary of the mentoring of fine players like
Gerry Brown and Cornell Rochester on the local
scene. He spent a lot of time traveling back and
forth between Philly and New York, playing at one
time in a band with guitarist Kevin Eubanks and
his brother, trombonist Robin Eubanks.
It’s easy to see why the guitarist Carlos Santana
enlisted Billy Johnson on three different occasions
to man the traps for tours and albums. He did
his first tour with Santana in 1990 and ‘91, then
rejoined the band in the summer of ‘94 for about
two-and-a-half years. Johnson is fleet around
the kit, but his most spectacular quality might
be his grounding. He throws his roots deep into
the music, keeps the drive going while leaving
room for the percussion to breathe around him. He’s not so much smooth as solid -- his
grooves have an edge to them. His solos are built around ostinato patterns, repeating a
phrase with the feet and adding onto it up top. There’s always a connection to the funk in
Johnson’s grooves.
Billy Johnson plays PEARL Drums
Johnson performed on Santana’s Milagro
album in 1992, and the Brothers record
featuring Carlos and Jorge Santana. He
plays the opening cut on Santana’s smash,
Supernatural, the spirited romp “(Da Le)
Taleo.” Billy has provided a hot rhythmic
bedrock -- a steady pulse on “Put Your
Lights On,” the powerful tom work on
“Migra,” some slinky funk on “Love Of My
Life,” and the upbeat Latin-infused rock
on “Maria Maria” and “Smooth.” He has
played on four albums with Frankie Beverly
and Maze, including Joy and Pain, Live In
New Orleans, We Are One, and Back To
Basics.
