William Gibson's play is based on the relationship between Helen Keller, born
deaf and blind, and her Irish governess, Annie Sullivan. While still retaining
traces of theatricality in the dialogue the overriding impression of the scenes
between Helen and Annie, often filmed in long takes, is that of raw spontaneity.
This unsentimental life-affirming film is grounded in a sense of the
complexities and confusion of human existence. Helen is the ultimate outsider,
an outcast from life itself. Annie, a combination mother and father to Helen, is
able to give her life through the (re)birth of human intelligence. Annie
achieves this because of her obsessive drive, a measure of both her greatness
and unfittedness for normal life. The intense physicality of the drama comes
close to reconciling conscious control and instinctive drive.
