Two companies – one vision
The BIS Group and MCE AG have had the same vision for a long time: Early on, both companies expressed their clear commitment
to providing their customers in the process and power generation industries with sustained support as service partners in their
efforts to boost productivity and efficiency. This pronounced dedication to customer orientation forms the shared basis for the
integration of MCE within the BIS Group in a move which offers benefits for both sides as well as for our customers.
With headquarters in Linz, Austria, MCE can look back
on a long tradition. In December 2009 it became part of
Bilfinger Berger AG and most of its operations are now being
integrated within the Bilfinger Berger Industrial Services
subgroup (BIS Group), which is based in Munich. Over the
past few years, both companies, BIS and MCE, have gone
from success to success. Despite their two very different
historical backgrounds, they have both gained a firm position
at the very vanguard of the European industrial services
market. From its domestic market in Germany, the BIS Group
has pursued a strategy of strong internationalisation with
forays into Eastern, Northern and Western Europe as well as
Northern America. By contrast, MCE has moved beyond its
core Austrian market to focus on Central Europe.
With over 5,000 employees, the MCE companies will be
contributing not only additional capacity but also valuable
skills to the BIS Group. Conversely, the enlarged group
will be able to harness additional potential. The mutual
benefits will become visible to our customers through the

alignment. In addition to the existing four regionally oriented
divisions, namely Central Europe, Northern & Eastern
Europe, Western Europe and International, which primarily
targets the US market, a Plant Technologies Division is also
being established within the “new” BIS.
With its international focus, this new Division will comprise
twelve companies and have over 4,000 employees. Its
primary focus will be on the provision of comprehensive
engineering and assembly services targeted at industrial
assets. The four regionally oriented divisions will be
responsible for full-range industrial services and particularly
maintenance. They have over 22,000 employees, including
more than 6,000 based at 28 companies in Central Europe,
i.e. Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Together, we plan to
convince our customers of our strength and efficiency by
offering them “Solutions for Industrial Services”.

Reputation established through orientation to solutions
With roots in Rheinhold & Mahla AG, whose history
goes back as far as 1887, the BIS Group has belonged to
Bilfinger Berger AG, Mannheim, since 2002. When it was
renamed Bilfinger Berger Industrial Services in 2006, the
lambda symbol was also modified. Since then, the new BIS
lambda has symbolised the Company’s successful position
as a provider of solutions. It realised early on that the
manufacturing industry is increasingly relying on external
service partners possessing extensive problem-solving skills
to handle its maintenance requirements. In this regard, its
particular strengths include its international outlook and a
non-centralised corporate structure with over 100 operating
companies.
From industry, for industry
MCE was established in 1989 in connection with the
restructuring of the publicly owned Austrian industry.
Originally incorporated in the 1930s as a specialist in steel
and plant construction, MCE evolved into one of Europe’s
leading plant technology and industrial service specialists
over the years through acquisitions, restructuring and
organic growth. In 2009, MCE AG comprised around
30 operating companies of varying sizes and backgrounds.
The oldest company within the MCE Group, VAM Anlagentechnik
und Montagen, was established as long ago as
in 1887, while the most recent addition was TSG
Industrieservice in 2008.

The commitment to offering services geared to future requirements in the form of “Solutions for Industrial Services” is of prime
and fundamental importance for the BIS Group. At the same time, the decentralised corporate structure affords maximum
flexibility as well as a broad and comprehensive range of services which the Company as a network is able to provide. By concentrating
on the construction and maintenance of industrial assets as well as facilities in the energy production and distribution
sector, the BIS Group is pursuing a clearly defined strategy, guaranteeing a high degree of sector competence.
The sectors addressed comprise refineries, the chemical/
petrochemical industry, the pharmaceuticals industry, power
stations/energy production and distribution – including
conventional power stations as well as nuclear power and
regenerative energies – the offshore industry, gas production
and processing, the aluminium and steel industry, the
food industry, the paper industry and mechanical and plant
engineering. In these markets, the Company has made a
name for itself as a choice partner for industrial services. It
pools complementing activities and links them with planning,
management and execution skills to provide full-service
solutions.
The BIS Group offers a wide range of services which can be
assembled for individual customers in line with their specific
requirements using internal resources for the most part.
These services cover the entire life cycle of an industrial asset
from analysis and consulting to construction, extensions,
modernisation, conversion and dismantling. They entail
detail engineering, design and production and include such
activities as assembly and commissioning, the supply of

spare parts, planning and execution of audits/turnarounds
and maintenance work as well as facility dismantling and
relocation.
This range is supplemented by specialist skills in steel construction
including the planning, fabrication and assembly
of complex steel structures such as bridges and facilities for
industry and infrastructure. The maintenance services cover
the entire gamut of industrial services including piping/
mechanics, E/I&C and machine engineering together with
scaffolding, insulation and surface protection. The Technical
Noise Control segment specialises in intake and exhaust systems
for gas turbines, enclosures for turbines and aggregates
as well as mufflers and filter systems.

The BIS Group offers its services on the basis of requirementoriented
models in the form of individual or master contracts,
packaged services and the coordination of resources,
main contracts as well as full-service maintenance with

the BIS Group sees training and skills development as

(HSEQ for short), the focus is on responsibility for employees

Central Europe Division
The BIS Group is becoming even more European than it was
before. Whereas Germany has previously formed the focal
point of its activities in Central Europe, the integration of
most of MCE within the BIS Group will additionally yield
a strong market presence in Austria. Like the three other
geographically oriented Divisions, the operating companies
have a regional focus, addressing the full range of industrial
services, such as piping and E/I&C as well as scaffolding,
insulation and painting. The BIS Group’s activities in Switzerland
were extended by means of an acquisition last year,
which also strengthened its footing in the pharmaceuticals
industry.
Northern & Eastern Europe Division
The cross-border collaboration between different BIS units
plays a particularly crucial role in this region. Established in
2008, this Division reflects the progress made in industrial
development in Central/Eastern Europe as well as the
advanced state of the process industry in Scandinavia. It
serves to intensify proven partnership models and to open
up neighbouring markets in Eastern and North-Eastern
Europe. The BIS Group’s activities in Scandinavia have proved
very successful, so much so that it has been able to reinforce
its leadership position in this market. The BIS companies
complement each other by focusing on integrated activities
on the one hand and maintenance on the other. MCE’s
specialist skills in steel and mechanical engineering are being
added to this Division.
Western Europe Division
Business activities in Western Europe form a crucial linchpin
in the BIS Group’s efforts to reinforce its leading position. The
success in this region has been underpinned by the relatively
recent entry into the UK market as well as the strong position
established in Belgium and the Netherlands. As well as operating
regionally, the BIS companies in Spain and Portugal also
assist on complex and demanding projects in neighbouring
countries. The foray into the French market in 2009 not only
broadened the BIS Group’s regional presence but also opened
up access to key-account customers in the pharmaceuticals
industry. The Technical Noise Control segment is allocated to
this division as a special centre of competence.
International Division
In addition to focusing on North America, the International
Division is opening up other non-European markets, specifically
countries and regions characterised by strong growth
potential and swift industrial development. In this way, the
commitment to medium and long-term business development
in non-European markets is firmly established within
the BIS Group’s structures. Business in North America was
reinforced in 2008 following the acquisition of a reputable
industrial services provider in the Houston region with customers
active in the oil, gas and petrochemicals industries.
Plant Technologies Division
Established through the formal integration of MCE within
the BIS Group, this new Division has a cross-regional outlook
and acts as the repository for the Group’s extended range
of plant technology services. It primarily targets the energy
production and distribution industry as well as the metallurgy,
chemicals/petrochemicals, paper and pulp sectors with a
range of services comprising planning, fabrication, assembly
and commissioning of entire plants or sub-plants as well as
components at power stations and industrial installations.
