Forget the Super Bowl: Football stars join
Sunday of action against rising tide of porn

For most Americans, this Sunday's Super Bowl will be the highlight of their weekend. But a group of Christian campaigners
has persuaded a number of high-profile football stars to back a day of action against tide of online porn swamping the internet.
NFL star Ryan Pickett is among the stars lending their name to a campaign led by the XXX Church, which calls itself 'the
number one Christian porn site'.
Its name is somewhat misleading, though, as it is actually a group of religious campaigners, boasting the support of more than
300 churches across the U.S.

The group holds events such as 'Porn and Pancakes', and is using this weekend's Super Bowl as a platform to launch
National Porn Sunday.
Their mission is to 'make you think, react and decide where you stand on issues of porn.'
Among the others to support XXX Church founder Craig Gross are Jon Kitna of the Dallas Cowboys, The San Diego Chargers'
Miles McPherson and the New York Jets' Eric Boles, all of whom discuss their experiences with porn in a film to promote
National Porn Sunday.
The video opens with Pickett , defensive tackle for the NFL's Green Bay Packers, and his wife Jennifer, who are both on the
XXX Church board of directors.

'I would love to be with you today, but fortunately I'm a little busy,' he says in the film.
The football star warns of how pornography addiction can destroy families: 'We truly believe in guarding your eyes and
guarding your marriage,' he said.
'When you start talking to guys it's like, "Wow, I didn't know it was that serious." A lot of families break up.'
Mr Gross, who calls pornography addiction 'the elephant in the pew', explained that the initiative 'focuses on helping people
who are in over their heads with pornography.

Campaign: XXX Church founder Craig Gross has the support of 300 churches across the U.S.
'For some it is ludicrous to link three X's with church, and for others it is long overdue,' he wrote on his website.
'The one undeniable truth that can't be ignored is the blatant push for all things sexual in our society.'
The American Psychiatric Association admits that there is some debate over whether pornography addiction exists at all, but
statistics released by XXX Church claim that almost half of Christian men in the U.S. have a 'pornography problem.'
It explained that many women also struggle with pornography addiction, and that the average age a child first sees
pornography is 11.
A survey in the UK found that more than 45 per cent of men admit that they have viewed internet pornography — a figure that
rises to upwards of 70 per cent for those aged between 18 and 34.
And according to another recent study, between 60 and 90 per cent of under-16s have viewed hardcore online pornography.
The adult entertainment industry in the U.S. is worth $12billion per year.
But those profiting from paid sites have expressed their anger over the explosion of websites offering free porn online.
A lawsuit in California against free adult entertainment site RedTube.com, saw a judge rule in favour of free sites, which were
accused of violating California’s Unfair Practices Act.
The complaint read: 'Now that consumers have the ability to watch high quality adult videos for free on RedTube.com, fewer
are making the choice to pay other adult website proprietors for the same content.'
But the court ruled that the complaint was designed to stifle free speech, and dismissed the lawsuit.
Today it emerged that an advertisement, due to air on television during the Super Bowl, has been rejected by Fox officials
because it made a religious reference to a passage from the bible.
The 30-second ad, produced by the Fixed Point Foundation Christian group, shows a group of men gathered around a big
screen watching a football game.
When a close-up of a verse from John 3:16 is flashed onscreen, one of the men uses a smart phone to find out what it means.
Though the channel can command $30million for an advertising slot during the Super Bowl, television executives accused the
commercial's makers of 'advancing particular beliefs or practices', and blocked it.
