Message
from the President:
I have some good news to share with you about the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation:
In 2009, we awarded over $100,000 in grants in our mission to support creative and
exemplary educational opportunities for the students and residents of Grosse Ile. I invite
you to join me in continuing this tradition of giving.
Despite economic difficulties, Grosse Ile remains firmly committed to academic excellence
and to providing our students with challenging opportunities. The strength of our schools
is evident: once again, Grosse Ile received Straight A’s on the Michigan School Report
Card and continues its ranking in the top ten districts in Michigan. Although we boast
sound programs, we must preserve the ability to expose students to a higher scholastic
standard. Grosse Ile must remain academically competitive. GIEF contributes to this
by enhancing current programs and by supporting the development of new academic
initiatives, like Elementary World Language, that attracts young families and prepares our
children for the global marketplace. We need your help to accomplish these goals.
Even more good news. . . this year GIEF gave over $50,000 in Technology Grants
that will encourage highly motivated students and staff to implement technology in
the classroom with regular experience and exposure. Due to generous support, podcasting,
20 Smart Boards and ELMO cameras and a new district-wide, state-of- the-art, webbased
Library Circulation System will integrate technology into the curriculum every day,
in K-12 classrooms.
Your gifts to the GIEF directly support learning on Grosse Ile. They promote leadership
and diversity through programs like the Advanced Placement Cultural Awareness
Program. Other 2009 grants include the Middle School’s Accelerated Reading and Tribal
Studies programs and our fifth graders’ economics curriculum culminating at Exchange
City. GIEF’s support of programs like the Patriot’s Fund and Earth Day provide learning
about the diverse world in which we live.
GIEF also funded the Summer Library Program and the internet-based Study Island
that support classroom work and extend learning into students’ homes and beyond.
GIEF grants equip our students with skills like learning Elementary Spanish and with tools
like podcasting equipment, microscopes and saxophones that give them a significant
edge when competing for nationally-ranked college programs, jobs or entrance into
professional schools.
We have accomplished much in 2009 at the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation. Our
continued success and tradition of supporting academic excellence depends on you –
our alumni, parents and friends. I hope you will take a moment as this year ends to renew
your commitment to GIEF by returning the enclosed envelope with your donation.
Sincerely,
Jerry Griffith, 2009 President
Board of Education Message:
During these tough economic times school districts around the state
are cutting back and offering fewer services than just a few years
ago. Grosse Ile Township Schools have faced these same challenges
and have made many difficult decisions that affect the students in this
community. 2009 was particularly brutal with the district struggling in
unprecedented budget territory on the heels of the 2008 – 2009 “cliff
year.” Fortunately for the students of Grosse Ile, this community has an
organization of hard-working, dedicated individuals that make up the
Gl Educational Foundation.
Not all communities have educational foundations, but years ago a
group of insightful community members started the GI Educational
Foundation to support the students and community with some of the
extras that sets our community apart. The GI Educational Foundation
has since grown larger, more generous and more needed. I thank
everyone from its inception to the present day who has helped make
this foundation such a success.
The GI Educational Foundation’s success is due to your support and
contributions. This community distinguishes itself from others by its
awareness and by the generosity of those who give each year.
Contributors like you realize that exemplary education is a basic
necessity and not a luxury. This sets us apart from others and makes
this community so special. You have been generous. Walk into any
building to see the effect of your contributions.
Among many GI Educational Foundation grants awarded in 2009,
instructional technology received a big boost in every building with a
$39,465 technology grant. This grant provided monies for 20 new
Smart Board Interactive Whiteboards and Document cameras. These
instructional technology tools plug right into network & infrastructure
upgrades built with dollars from the 2006 bond passage. With this type
of teaching technology in our classrooms, we see our bricks and mortar
upgrades become the foundation for exemplary education in action.
Your vision and support of the students of GI have not gone unnoticed.
As the state continues to struggle, your contribution will be more
important than ever. What may have once been considered extras
through GI Educational Foundation grants are now becoming the means
to keep up the latest in education. The future holds such promise here,
with our test scores still among the best in the state and our graduation
rate among the top 10. Thanks to the generosity of people like you,
that which we hold dearest in this community will be passed down to
the next generation.
Daniel Murphy, President
Grosse Ile Township Schools Board of Education
Mission Statement:
The Grosse Ile Educational Foundation, Inc. is
a volunteer, non-profit organization committed
to funding life-long educational experiences
for the students and families of Grosse Ile.
The foundation financially supports creative
and exemplary educational opportunities
through the Grosse Ile Township Schools
and the community.
The Need for
An Educational
Foundation
Grosse Ile is proud of the excellent educational
opportunities available through its schools
and community organizations. Often there are
enrichment programs or projects particular
schools, teachers or organizations would like to
offer that their budget does not support. The
Grosse Ile Educational Foundation provides
funding for these activities and strives to continue
to improve the level of education offered to the
children and adults in our community.
Foundation Priorities
The GIEF has prioritized eight key areas of interest. This list provides a
framework when considering grants to be awarded. These are reviewed
annually and updated as the needs of the schools and community
change. The key areas of interest are:
Arts and Humanities
Curriculum Enhancement
Foreign Language
Leadership and Diversity
Lifetime Fitness
Outdoor/Environmental Education
Science and Math
Technology
Arts and Humanities $3,857
GIEF grants provided new musical instruments for the
Music Departments.
Middle School students now enjoy a new Yamaha
YBS-52 Baritone Saxophone to improve students’ overall
musical abilities and reap the benefits of a higher degree
of learning. According to Mr. Reiman, Band Director,
“We have been able to build a more balanced tone as
an ensemble with this new instrument. In addition, giving
the students more options of instruments to play not only
heightens interest, but also makes them more versatile.
The “bari sax” was used last year primarily in concert and
symphony bands at the middle school. The improved
quality of this brand new instrument has added to the sound of the middle school band.”
Foreign Language
$125,000 ($25,000/year for 5 years)
¿Hablas español? Elementary students in grades 3-5
do! This grant provides these Grosse Ile students with a
quality, Spanish language program.
Michael & Matthew Dishon, third and fifth-graders at
Meridian Elementary, said, “Spanish was one of our
favorite classes! It was fun and we learned a lot.
Now my brother and I can speak Spanish together
at home.”
Research shows that early learning of a second
language aids in lifelong fluency. Learning a second
language at the elementary level prepares students
for more rigorous study at the middle and high school
levels and enhances Grosse Ile students’ ability to
compete in the global marketplace.
Accelerated Reader $3,134
A new Accelerated Reading
program for 6th and 7th grade
students was purchased that
includes multiple copies of
36 highly acclaimed young
adult books. According to Ms.
Bringard, English Teacher, “ If our
students are exposed to quality,
award winning books we can
ignite a love of reading that will
flourish throughout the students’
lives.” The program includes
the Accelerated Reader computerized reading comprehension testing program, over 350
books as well as 13 audio books to be used with students with learning disabilities.
Technology —
SMART Boards & ELMO Cameras $39,465
It is a priority of the foundation to assist our schools by
providing technology tools to meet the ever-changing
technological climate that we are in. These resources
are critical for teachers to enhance the quality of their
lessons and to appeal to students living in an increasingly
technological world.
Study Island (Math, English Language Arts, and Science) $6,472
Study Island is an internet
computer program specifically
designed for 2nd through
5th grade students. This
program provides them with
an opportunity to review
information that has been
taught at school. It is an
entertaining and convenient
way to reinforce important
skills, as the students can use
it at home in addition to the
classroom. Mr. Swick and Mrs. Kubiak, teachers at Parke Lane Elementary & Meridian,
have this to say about Study Island, “Students enjoy using the Study Island program
because it reinforces the state benchmarks in a fun and friendly, game-based fashion.
Since our students have been using this program, we have seen an improvement in their
MEAP scores as an added bonus. This has been a wonderful tool for our students.” The
GIEF grant continues to fund the subscription of Study Island for our elementary students.
In 2009, GIEF made an unprecedented commitment
to instructional technology with the purchase of 20
interactive SMART boards and ELMO document cameras.
This grant has created 21st century learning environments
for students in K-12. The grant allows GITS to proceed
with technology initiatives mandated by the state of
Michigan and satisfies teachers’ demand for more
technological tools to enhance curriculum.
Bryan Richards, AP Statistics instructor at GIHS, deems
SMART boards as “critical in consistently presenting
abstract concepts by enhancing presentations with
dynamics applets and visual examples available only online.
The GIEF SMART boards also allow teachers to capture
material for student review at home, extending learning
beyond the walls in which we teach.”
Our students, however, reap the greatest rewards as
their comfort with technology as a work tool, rather than
entertainment source, is stressed. Teachers report that
these multi-modality tools meet the needs of all types of
learners, increasing student engagement that profoundly
impacts learning.
Leadership & Diversity —
Young Patriots Fund $5,000
It is a long standing tradition that Grosse Ile
Middle School tries to make certain every
eighth grade student is able to go on the
class trip to Washington, DC.
Podcasting $4,400
Students in elementary classrooms
are learning how to
record podcasts using Macbooks
purchased by a GIEF grant. The
students created podcasts in
listening centers that will become
available via the web for families
to download to their iPods or MP3
players for listening at home.
Listening centers provide the
opportunity for students to build
sight vocabulary, improve their
listening, foster reading independence, model phrasing and fluency and provide access to
higher text levels and self-assessment.
Jen Park, GITS Technology Director, “Podcasting is an important classroom tool that
supports curriculum objectives. Without the GIEF, this project wouldn’t have even gotten off
the ground. Thank you GIEF for recognizing projects that promote 21st century learning.”
“While discussing the increased number of
families that were struggling financially the
GIEF made a remarkable and generous
donation to the fund we use to support
student scholarships to Washington, DC.
That fund has been named the Young
Patriots Fund. Each year we solicit donations
to the fund through a letter writing
campaign. Our community has been and
continues to be very generous.
We provided full and partial scholarships to
14 students last year alone. We continue
to maintain a balance in our fund from
year to year,” Mr. Dave Tucker, Middle
School Principal.
Curriculum Enhancement — Exchange City $5,760
This Immersive Learning
hands-on program gives our fifth
grade students the opportunity
to put economics, government,
math, social studies and career
education concepts learned
in the classroom to work in a
real- life simulation.
During an eight-week curriculum,
fifth graders increase their passion
for learning through real-life
applications like electing officials
and applying for jobs in Exchange City. Their studies culminate in a day-long field trip as they
role-play to run the city and learn the interdependence of a real-world workplace.
Library Circulation System $9,800
Summer Library $1,500
The new district-wide, web based
Follett Destiny Library Circulation
System is made solely possible
by a GIEF grant. From home or
school, using a student id number,
this RESA supported system allows
students and families to search
all Grosse Ile School libraries for
books, search for Accelerated
Reader options, peek at a book’s
cover – helpful when looking for
a lost book, view accounts and
overdue notices. Potentially, this system is designed to integrate the reading collections
at all four buildings allowing inter-district requests for students to access all books. Visit
http://libraries.resa.net to “check out” the new library system.
GIEF also continued their support of the elementary Summer Library Program allowing
students summer access to books and special programming in June and July.
Other Grants Awarded $2,764
GIEF also provided funds for
various grants including materials
for Mr. Butler’s American History
classes, a High School Cultural
Diversity Awareness study and
field trip, the Oxford English
Dictionary CD-Rom, a Middle
School Cultural Study of
Indigenous Tribes of the Americas,
an elementary Earth Day program
and a school beautification project
led by Ms. Barringer’s Special
Education students.

In Memoriam
Rosalind Meyer
“Living is giving; giving is living” were words Rosalind
Murray Meyer lived by. Rosie’s enthusiasm and
generosity live on throughout Grosse Ile and
her many contributions to our island. She was
a founding member of the Island Beautification
and the Natural Resources Committees, former
President of the Grosse Ile Questers and the
Musicale. She also was a member of many island
organizations including Friends of the Grosse Ile
Historical Society, Book Club and Alliance for the
Arts. Whether she was buying instruments for
the marching band, playing Santa Claus, giving
scholarships to deserving musicians or building
our gazebo on the Commons to host summer
concerts, she was an island tour de force of
giving. Because of her dedication to Grosse Ile,
the Grosse Ile Jaycettes named her Woman of
the Year and the Grosse Ile Rotary awarded Rosie
Citizen of the Year.
Rosie’s commitment to the Grosse Ile Educational
Foundation was no different. As a long-standing
member of GIEF’s Advisory Board, she was a
generous benefactor and annual donor to many
auctions, providing trips and prizes with a Rosie
flair. She was a perennial, early bird to the
fundraisers and parties, spreading her rare brand
of sunny optimism throughout the event, selling
tickets and bidding on scarecrows and student
art. Her support of the foundation, in kind and
deed, were an enthusiastic example of creative
and exemplary people going above and beyond for
education in our community. Rosie’s innumerable
gifts of time, talent and treasure can’t possibly be
contained here; however, her spirit and example
live on in Grosse Ile by the many GIEF grants she
supported. “Help whenever you can with an open
mind and joyful heart.” Rosie Meyer, the epitome
of generosity leaves very big, stylish and colorful
shoes to fill.

Vintage
Lights up Grosse Ile
Since 1996, the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation, and the community, has funded almost 200 grants
in support of creative and exemplary education.
In 2009, together we reached an incredible milestone, as GIEF surpassed $500,000 in educational
grants. This spring, we celebrated our half-million dollar achievement and to begin our common
million-dollar quest, GIEF hosted the “Make A Million Gala.”
The Make A Million Gala was a festive re-creation of vintage Vegas,
complete with Vegas legends Elvis, Marilyn, Liberace & Liza and the
Rat Pack. Gamblers upped the ante in a bustling just-for-fun casino
at craps, roulette, blackjack and authentic slot machines manned by
community volunteer dealers and a few pros. Romantic couples
renewed their vows at Elvis’ Til Death Do Us Part Chapel while the
more adventurous hopped in the Gorno Ford Millionaire Maker or
enjoyed a martini or cigar at one of the thematic bars.
Big winners of the evening went home with spectacular prizes including a Man Cave package with a
big screen TV and La-Z-Boy recliner, diamond jewelry, a Motorcity hotel & casino package, All-Clad
cookware, an Apple laptop package, a trip to Las Vegas and a Big Dream raffle prize of $5,000.
The success of the evening is purely due to our generous sponsors, benevolent donors and our party
patrons. They include:
