Modern America is one of the most challenging places to practice organized religion. In the past,
entire civilizations were founded on religious concepts, but the cynicism and scientific bias that
are found in America today, makes it difficult to be openly faithful. No matter what type of religion
you may practice. There have always been people who made it their business to try and dispel
religious beliefs, and there always will be. It is part of the challenge of developing your own
firmness in your beliefs.
Living in the power of the spirit makes it easier for you to defend your faith because you
embrace it so heartily that no words or arguments can possibly shake it. But others will surely
try. They do not understand that living in the power of the spirit is not a hobby or some outside
activity. It is something beautiful that comes from within and while it can and should be shared
with the outside world, it does not come from the outside world.
The best way to defend your faith in America is to revert to your internal conversation with
Jesus. No matter how He expresses it, his most important message is “Tell them that I love
them”, not “argue with them until they agree”. If anything, arguing about your faith may be the
quickest way to disrupt it because at some point you are going to want to respond in anger
when Jesus would have responded with love. Hence every conversation with Jesus you have
will ultimately result in a reminder to “Tell them that I love them.”
If you want to defend your faith in modern America, do it with the same lack of ego that Jesus
would have. Your faith is in Jesus, not in mankind. Of course, there are also the details of
humanity that make love the most dependable way to defend your faith.
Have you ever stopped to consider that people are pushing your buttons? When you respond to
that with anger, or the development of factual figures, you are playing right into their hands.
Faith has nothing to do with anger or arguing. Consider looking at it from another point of view.
What if you were outside on a nice sunny day and someone told you the sky was not blue?
When you responded that it was blue, they wanted you to prove it. How could you? You have no
idea what 'blue' looks like to another person. The facts are right there in front of you but can be
difficult to prove. Instead of arguing the point, the only way to end the discussion would be to

simply let it go with gentle love. Sometimes people really can't see that the sky is blue, not
because it isn't, but because they are blocking their own vision in search of something to argue
about. You know the sky is blue without any question, so there is no need to get upset about it
or defend it because it is, no matter what you do. Let your faith be the blue sky.
