HIKING BOOTS
Better quality, better walk
Hiking is the top “people’s sport”. Young and old alike climb the heights
and explore into the distance. Using the right footwear means a more
pleasant, lighter experience. But what makes a good hiking boot?
The right hiking shoe should be selected depending on requirements and difficulty.
Solid, sturdy hiking boots are much lighter nowadays.
Material, workmanship and form provide
relief when climbing rocky heights or taking long
paths through forests and meadows. Not every shoe
is right for every challenge. Shorter walks on forest
paths, for instance, are easily managed with a halfheight
all-terrain shoe. A solid, higher hiking boot is
recommended for more difficult mountain paths. A demanding
hiking tour with climbing elements or glacier
passages, on the other hand, requires mountain boots.
Quality is just as important as the terrain on which a
shoe will be used. To find the ideal shoe specifically
within the context of its use, it helps to pay attention
to some important criteria. In general, softer shoes offer
greater comfort. On the other hand, a harder shoe
WWW.FUSSVITAL.INFO
“Feel-good feet”
provides more stability and protection. In rough terrain,
this provides protection against striking the edge of the
foot or bending the ankle.
Light or heavy?
The same difference applies to the weight of a shoe:
light equals comfortable; heavy equals sturdy. It’s
important for the shoe to fit well and the foot to feel
good in it. When making a purchase, one should also
ensure that the shoe is sufficiently large. The toes should
have a few millimetres of space, and the heels should
not move up and down when walking. Excessively tight
shoes may cause unpleasant pressure spots. Permanent
pressure against these areas initiates protective callus
About 60 percent of the approx. 52 million internet users in
Germany obtain health information on the web. Starting immediately,
www.fussvital.info supplies the product world of
GEHWOL and GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT when it comes to high-quality
foot care. The website is clearly structured and divided into six theme
fields about the foot, such as summery fresh feet, foot odour, foot fungus
or dry skin. It is quick and uncomplicated for users to find out how to
relieve foot problems, or how to give the skin of their feet an attractive,
summery appearance. Users can also evaluate products. Under the
products, interested persons can also read test reports written by other
internet users.
production, leading to painful weals or corns in the
long run.
Some specialist stores have a ramp where one can test
walking downhill. This is important, since pressure
against the shoe increases on downgrades. The feet
need slightly more space than they do in street shoes. It
may make sense to go one size up. It’s also recommended
to bring hiking socks along for trying on shoes, since
they are usually slightly bulkier and also strongly influence
the climate in the shoe. Shoe climate is just as
important as fit for walking comfort. This is specifically
measured by water permeability. If it’s high, the shoe
breathes, and the climate is good. Actively breathing
materials include leather or synthetic membranes such
as Goretex.
The sole holds it
The quality of the inner lining should not be neglected
as well. Poor material may lead to small “knots”
which apply increased pressure to affected skin areas
or form blisters. There are just as many demands on the
soles. It should be able to handle strain, have a strong
profile and be slip resistant. At the same time, walking
on terrain requires good rolling action.
In summary, there’s no right shoe for everyone. When
choosing shoes for hiking, one should try the shoes on
and obtain expert advice. Shoe sellers professionally
measure the feet and make recommendations for the
right brand and model.
130 YEARS OF GEHWOL FOOTCREAM
Running smoothly
The feet carry an enormous load. For instance, they go once around the globe in a
lifetime. Particularly with high strain such as long hikes, sore and painful feet,
soreness and chafing and rubbing occur frequently. 130 years ago, druggist Eduard
Gerlach invented a form of effective protection which has lost nothing of its
popularity to the present day – GEHWOL FOOTCREAM.
Two comments from the internet represent the unbroken
enthusiasm for a product which started
its success story more than 130 years ago: “I
recommend GEHWOL FOOTCREAM. It prevents burning,
sore and blistered feet.” or “This has always helped
me. I can only say: bye-bye blisters!”
Bad experiences with long marches caused company
founder Eduard Gerlach to develop a revolutionary and
particularly reliable foot protection product, which
finally hit the market in 1882. At that time, good and
comfortable leather shoes were not yet a product for
the average citizens, who were exposed to extreme foot
strain as farmers or factory workers.
From personal experience
Gerlach himself had participated in two wars, and found
out how painful sores and blisters can be. The potash
footbath which was common at that time was known for
its callus softening and wound healing properties, but
had the decisive disadvantage that it could barely be
Effective foot
protection on long
walks – a benefit
promise which is
kept to the present
day.
done during the long marches of
that period.
Therefore Eduard Gerlach started
looking for a preparation
form with a comparable effect
which could be used easily anywhere.
He was successful in
creating a suitable protective
cream and producing it in a
consistently high quality, far
exceeding the well-known
footbath with its preventive and
healing properties. Its development
took 14 years. Finally, he
called it E. Gerlach’s PRESERVA-
TIVE CREAM.
Jubilee of effectiveness
After it changed its name in 1910, it was known as
GEHWOL FOOTCREAM – a name which it bears to the
present day. At that time, it formed the GEHWOL brand,
which stands for top quality in foot care to the present
day. Little has changed in the recipe of the cream from
the 19th century, which is especially popular with hikers
and athletes. The cream base of specialised medicinal
soap, vaseline, lanolin and talcum effectively
shields the skin against mechanical irritants and
provides lasting added strength to the foot skin with
regular use.
Popular not just with hikers – GEHWOL FOOTCREAM
who takes long walks or subjects their feet to severe
strain for sporting or professional reasons. GEHWOL
Extra provides additional daily intensive care. The
cream prevents burning feet, foot fungus, foot odour
and callus. Natural oils of eucalyptus, rosemary,
lavender and thyme enliven the feet and render dry,
brittle skin supple again.
Natural essential oils such as thyme oil reduce sweat
production to normal levels, prevent excessive bacterial
decomposition of foot sweat and disinfect the foot,
protecting it against inflammation and infections.
Strongly strained – well protected
Camphor encourages circulation and enhances the
performance of the foot. Cooling menthol refreshes it.
With its skin protecting, deodorising and disinfectant
effects, the cream is still an ideal companion for anyone
130 years ago, the FOOT CREAM was still called
E. GERLACH‘S PRESERVATIVE CREAM.
EFFECTIVE:
Vaseline
Vaseline is among the best known ointment
bases and is used for numerous purposes in
cosmetics as well as other fields. It owes its
“career” to coincidence.
The discovery of vaseline was an act of despair.
Chemist Sir Robert Chesebrough (1837 to 1933)
had his back to the wall and was trying to avert
bankruptcy. In 1859, he entered the crude oil business.
He noticed strange, paraffin-like residue on the drill rig.
Oil workers pointed out to Chesebrough that contusions
and burns healed better after applying the mass.
Fascinated by this, he intensively experimented with
the oil residue and finally made his breakthrough in
1870. He produced the “petroleum gel” and patented
his discovery. The chemist only named his product
vaseline later in production.
Perfect attributes
Just like paraffin, it has numerous applications. For instance,
vaseline is a basis for the production of milking
fats. It is used in industry as a lubricant and in smooth
leather accessories such as bicycle seats and motorcycling
wear as a care agent. It is also used as an environmentally
friendly protectant against growths on the
exterior of ship hulls.
In cosmetics, many people know it as a make-up
remover or as protection against rough and brittle lips.
Vaseline has the attribute of protecting the moisturepreserving
function of the natural skin barrier. After its
discovery, foot care visionary Eduard Gerlach utilized
its positive attributes and used the ointment base to
develop E. Gerlach’s PRESERVATIVE CREAM. The recipe
remains nearly unchanged today and provides effective
protection against soreness, blisters, soreness
and chafing and rubbing through the skin. However it
changed its name to GEHWOL FOOTCREAM in 1910.
In 1879, Sir Robert Chesebrough discovered vaseline,
which has numerous uses today.
AMRUM
Kniepsand
„Oomram“ ab, was nichts anderes bedeutet als:
Jahrhundert
dann zu den Österreichern und Preußen.
Am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts nahm der Fremdenverkehr
raschen Aufschwung und veränderte die wirtschaftliche
Struktur auf der Insel nachhaltig. Das Eieressen
ist spätestens dann anderen Versorgungsstrukturen
gewichen.
Amrum in Flammen
GEHWOL REFRESHING BALM
Pick up for the feet
Spring has come, and the urge to do more outdoors is growing. Our feet quickly get too warm on hikes,
extended walks or during sports. What to do for strained feet? GEHWOL Refreshing Balm provides
quick, soothing freshness for the feet.
stockings after care. One
summer tip: place the refreshing
balm in the freezer cabinet
for a few minutes before application.
So the freshness kick
already starts during use.
Those who are active and move a lot will quickly
get burning feet, especially in the warmer seasons.
The legs become heavy and tired; every
step is painful. Plagued load bearers experience
refreshing coolness with GEHWOL Refreshing Balm.
The cooling cream noticeably relieves pain, itchiness
and burning feet. .
Cooling sensation for the feet
Natural mint oil and menthol ensure an immediate,
activating fresh sensation after application. Furthermore
the volatile components in the oil prevent foot odour
and foot fungus. Peppermint oil has many benefits
which can be used for the freshness balm. For example,
studies prove its effective protection against pathogens
such as fungi and viruses. Its cooling effect is of particular
interest for cosmetic applications. It results from the
high share of menthol and the presence of eucalyptol.
Menthol and eucalyptol are the only chemical compounds
which stimulate the cold receptors of the skin,
apart from thermal stimuli. Immediately after use, users
feel a refreshing cold sensation. Nourishing substances
such as urea regulate skin moisture and render hardened
skin areas elastic again. If the feet are in closed
shoes all day, it’s best to prepare them for their work first
thing in the morning with GEHWOL Refreshing Balm.
The cream is rapidly absorbed and non-fatty, so
that there are no problems with putting on socks or
GEHWOL Refreshing Balm lends “hot” feet a pleasant,
effective cooling sensation.
PRODUCTION
Quality matters
A product always promises benefits. In order to fulfil this in the long term, the manufacturing
process must meet the highest demands. The selection of base materials, the recipe and many
other things are decisive for the quality of the foot care product.
Lavender is not always lavender. Good quality of the
base material for one of the most popular essential
oils decides the quality of the cosmetic end product
in manufacturing. Careful selection of the ingredients for
a cream, ointment or scrub are therefore a fixed part of
the production process.
Validated process
Defined processes are needed to ensure high quality in
cosmetic product manufacturing. The company software
SAP was introduced at Eduard Gerlach GmbH in 2008.
The prospectively validated process to provide quality
assurance for processes continuously documents the entire
manufacturing process. In this way, all operational
processes are analysed in detail, using this information to
secure and improve long term quality assurance.
Every step counts
In practice, this means that every individual production
step is monitored: Selection and processing of raw materials,
mixing by the recipe, hygiene regulations, filling,
packing, shipping and so forth. This high quality claim
requires a holistic process and orientation to the highest
international requirements. After all, it’s about producing
quality products to fulfil the traditional benefit promise of
GEHWOL: “Everything for the well-being of the feet”.
The product manufacturing process is systematically
monitored at Gerlach.
