TRAILERING PACKAGE
A Trailering Package providing the necessary heavy duty equipment for trailering is an
available option.
The package is designed primarily for trailers weighing between 2,000 and 6,000 pounds,
which are designated by the Society of Automotive Engineers as Class II and Class III.
Trailering Package consists of the following:
80 AMP Generator with Integral Regulator
Special Cooling Package (Radiator and Fan)*
3.15 to 1 Axle Ratio (Not Available on Eldorado)
* Additional transmission cooling is built into the larger radiator, eliminating the need for
other transmission cooling devices.
Other equipment specific to a particular trailer, such as platform, wiring harness and
brake controller should be purchased locally. The Trailering Package is offered on the Calais,
De Ville, Eldorado and Brougham. Fleetwood Seventy-Five Sedan and Limousine should not
be used to tow a trailer.
CAUTION
Even when equipped with Trailering Package, certain precautions must be exercised.
1. Loaded trailer weight should not exceed 6,000 lbs.
2. Tongue weight should be approximately 10% of the loaded trailer weight.
3. A frame, side-rail mounted, load-equalizing hitch with sway control of sufficient
capacity is required for trailers over 2,000 lbs. loaded weight.
4. Do not use axle-mounted hitches. They can cause damage to the axle housing, wheel
bearings, wheels or tires.
5. Trailer brakes are required on trailers over 1,000 lbs. loaded weight.
6. Do not tap into the car's hydraulic brake system to couple with a trailer hydraulic
brake system. Master cylinder fluid capacity may not be sufficient to operate both
car and trailer brakes.
7. Whenever a trailer hitch is removed, be certain to have any mounting holes in the
underbody properly sealed to prevent possible entry of exhaust fumes, dirt or water.
More frequent vehicle maintenance is required when a car is used for trailer towing.
Recommendations are listed in the owner's manual.
