May 2010 Die Flüsternde Bombe 3
Normally I use my May column to urge you
to support the Street Survival school Bob
Goebel typically organizes for this month.
But in March, Candlestick Park called him to tell him they
gave our date to KFOG’s KaBoom concert instead—they
didn’t even offer him free tickets as an apology! So our
school has been rescheduled for August 7—don’t miss it!
I’ll be there for Street Survival with my fifteen-year-old
niece, who unfortunately isn’t old enough to take the course
yet. I’m bringing her so she can see what it’s all about. I
hope to see YOU out there, too!
Much has been made of the fact that I was chapter president
years ago—nineteen, to be exact. Supposedly, I was the youngest—and
definitely the first female—when I became Ms. Prez
in 1990 through 1991. Those were some strange times in the
chapter, and in comparison, being prez in 2010 is WAY easier.
At the time, I never thought it cool that I was a young,
female president. But I guess it can be a big deal in some
chapters, as our board learned recently while at the Chapter
Congress in March.
The Chapter Congress is a national Club event at which
board members from all the BMW CCA chapters gather for
a weekend conference. I’m the only one on our board who
had been to a Chapter Congress before; I’ve been to several,
in fact. It’s always an interesting event, which is why I pushed
everyone on our chapter board to go. You never know what
you’ll learn and whom you’ll meet, so I really thought it would
be beneficial for our board to experience it themselves. I had
a pretty good idea of what we
would come away with, but there
were still some fun surprises.
You never know what you’ll
learn or whom you’ll meet.
Some of the more interesting
moments at the Congress
came about during a discussion
about how to get the younger
members—those under 30 for
some chapters, and under 40 for others—to be active and
participate. One participant suggested that it would be a
great idea to have an under-30-year-old member be the
membership chair. Guess what? Our membership chair, Ian
Dunn, is under 30! So we pulled his nose out of updating
our GGC Facebook page, and put him on the spot to explain
what got him to volunteer and join the chapter board.
Most interesting to me was the question I got from
another chapter inquiring how we got our board to agree
to allow someone as young as Ian to join us. Huh?! It never
even occurred to me that his age would be an issue—it’s
just not an issue with GGC. After all, I was in my twenties
when I became president the first time—our board members
are of all ages. (In fact, I think we could use some board
members in their 60s and 70s. So if you’re out there and
want to volunteer, let me know.)
After that, Ian was the unofficial star of the event. He
was giving other chapters advice on how to set up Facebook
pages and how to attract younger members. So much for
just being a quiet observer, Ian!
Speaking of Facebook, Aleksey Kadukin (our secretary)
was sitting in a workshop on social media and marketing
ACROSS thE BOARd
By Tammi Hull, President & Treasurer
when the speaker asked which chapters had Facebook pages.
Of course Aleksey raised his hand. The speaker called on a
few of those with raised hands and brought up their chapter
Facebook pages on the screen; they were all quite outdated.
Then, when Aleksey was called on, the speaker proceeded
to our Facebook page. Ian (who was in another meeting) had
just updated it minutes before. However, the crowd thought
Aleksey was updating it on the spot on his Motorola Razr cell
phone and asked him to show them how to do it. Aleksey
sheepishly had to explain that he couldn’t do it from the Razr.
The biggest thing I think our board learned during the
weekend was how different our chapter really is. It’s not
just our size that makes us distinctive; as the second-largest
chapter in the Club (next to the National Capital Chapter in
the Washington DC area), we have a lot of weight we could
throw around. But I honestly don’t believe we do—we’re
too busy providing events for our
members to worry about what
other chapters are or aren’t doing.
What surprised us is the perception
other chapters have about
us: that we do throw our weight
around—at least in the Pacific
Region. So we returned from the
congress knowing that’s something we can work on.
Of course, there’s always something we can work on…
especially when I get new ideas! I’m thinking about a new
chapter event similar to the So Cal Vintage gathering (http://
socalvintagebmw.com/), kind of like the Puget Sound Chapter’s
E30 Picnic. The basic concept is to invite all BMWs up
through the E30 3 Series model—hey, I need some place to
bring out my beautifully refreshed 1990 M3! I’m thinking of
a September or October date, and a possible location of the
Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. Any interest?
And speaking of the Northwest E30 Picnic (www.
e30picnic.com), is anyone from here going? My partner,
Bill Arnold, and I are thinking about making the drive up.
Since the Targa Canada West rally has been canceled, we’re
looking for an excuse to still head to the Seattle area—the
picnic looks like the event! Send me an email if you’re
interested (president@ggcbmwcca.org).
Finally, be sure to go to our BMW corral at the ALMS
races at Laguna Seca on May 22! Information is on our
chapter website, and corral passes are available for purchase
via www.MotorsportReg.com.
May 15, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Brisbane Marina, Brisbane
Paul Gommel, pgommel@gmail.com, www.bayarea02.com
It’s the tenth year of the Bay Area 02 group’s Swap &
Show. All are welcome at this event, and there is no charge
for the general public.
As with prior years, we anticipate a large and varied
showing of primarily BMW 2002s (last year we had just
over 100 2002s), but also other BMW models between 1965
and 1976, including Neue Klasse sedans, Bavarias, and E9s.
In addition to the beautiful cars, there will be the now-legendary
taco truck, a well-stocked and exciting raffle for oodles
of 2002-related goodies, as well as the opportunity to share
a laugh and a story with fellow vintage-BMW enthusiasts.
For those who wish to show a car, swap parts, or do
both, the entrance fee when registering online is just $20.
Cost is $30 if you wait to register on the day of the show.
Included in the registration fee—in addition to parking
among the BMWs—is a commemorative T-shirt, a couple of
small goodies, and a complimentary raffle ticket to get you
in the spirit. If you’re already in the spirit and would like to
volunteer some time on the day of the show (maybe an hour
or so), please contact Matt Brown at rhedtiger@yahoo.com.
We hope you will come and join us for this fun event,
now a decade old. Mark your calendar!
Join us at Great America for our second autocross of
the 2010 season!
Autocross is an inexpensive, safe way to experience the
dynamics of your car. It develops your driving ability and
helps you discover your car’s capabilities and limitations—
making you a better, safer driver on the road. It’s a “personal
best” sport; the greatest thrill of autocross is the challenge of
beating your own time. It’s fun! Want to read more? Check
out the Autocross Primer on the Chapter website.
Registration is online only. Event cost is $45 (optional
Come and help celebrate BMW of North America’s 35th
anniversary by rooting BMW on to victory at the ALMS
race at Laguna Seca in May—not October, as in past years.
With the high-tech, high-speed Le Mans prototypes and
GT machines of the American Le Mans Series staging a
Saturday afternoon-into-evening six-hour race, our BMW
CCA corral will be the place to watch all the action!
ESCORT and BMW NA has generously agreed to sponsor
our joint Golden Gate and Sacramento Valley chapter
BMW corral and hospitality area. This Turn Five hospitality
area will provide a fantastic vantage point to cheer on the
BMW-Rahal Letterman team.
2010 sees the return of the team’s celebrated inauguralseason
pilots, with Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner sharing
the #92 M3, and Joey Hand with Dirk Müller co-driving
the #90 M3. You can be sure that our own Pat de Witt will
once again lead the way to meet the BMW team in the pits
to have the same fun as last year!
Online registration is required at http://bit.ly/GGC_
The goals of the teen car-control clinic are to teach
students some of the basics of car control, to enhance their
enjoyment of driving, and to improve their competence as
drivers. During the event, students maneuver their cars
through exercises laid out using orange traffic-safety cones
in a closed parking lot. They will experience each exercise
element several times in order to learn from their mistakes
and improve their skills.
While performing maneuvers, all student drivers
will have trained driving coaches accompanying them
to provide real-time feedback. There is no stopwatch, nor
head-to-head competition with other cars. The students
are here to improve their skills, not to compare themselves
with someone else.
The exercise elements are laid out in advance by the
event chairman and are designed to be fun, safe, challenging,
and educational. Each element will teach the students
a specific skill or group of skills.
* Open to teens ages 16–19
May 2010 Die Flüsternde Bombe 11
Sweating
By dennis harrold (with apologies for the camera)
the Details
Hold it right there! Put the
dish soap down and back away
sloooowly—keep your hands
where we can see ’em! yes, we know it
has mandarin-orange essential oils, but
along with the dirt, it’ll strip the wax
clean off your car’s finish.
That might be what Justin Archer of West Coast Detailing
would tell you if you had attended the very informative
tech session at his shop in San Luis Obispo. Held in March,
the event saw a good turnout; fifteen of our local members,
plus a few friends, were in attendance. We also had firsttimers
Gregg Stratton and Paul DiMauro, founder of the
annual Pacific Sharkfest for E24 6 Series coupes.
Archer gave a discourse of his procedures for detailing a
customer car, covering a lot of material and product information.
Since we’ve had detailing articles in the Bombe before,
I’ll focus on tips and procedures not mentioned in previous
issues. We’ll also skip the product info, since much of what
West Coast Detailing uses is only available commercially.
Our discussion begins with cleaning the interior,
where West Coast starts a complete detailing session on a
customer’s car. Usually, some of the dirt and dust will end
up on the exterior during an interior cleaning—not good
if the exterior has already been washed.
Archer is an advocate of using compressed air to get
in those hard-to-reach places clean. That twilight zone
between the seats and center tunnel comes to mind; you
know the area—it’s the one with magnetic properties, where
small objects are seemingly sucked into a black hole.
Carpet stains are handled by light scrubbing with a
wet rag using Tuff Stuff multi-purpose cleaner or a similar
cleaner. A light touch is important, since the idea is to clean
the dirt near the top as it works its way up. “Deep cleaning”
is a neat marketing slogan, but attempts to scrub at the base
usually result in bringing more and more dirt to the surface.
(I’ve found the same to be true with carpets in the house.)
For the exterior wash, Archer uses three different mitts
or sponges; to prevent having grit or grunge migrate from
one area to the next, he uses one for the top surface, another
for the sides, and the third for the tires and wheels. A mitt
that is dropped on the ground is retired for the day, so
there’s no chance of any grit scratching the finish.
When drying the car, compressed air is again useful.
It gets the water out of those leaky-spigot-type areas like
the mirrors and grilles. For the final drying, Archer uses a
chamois; properly cared for, it will last until the material
literally falls apart.
Areas often neglected are the door jambs and the
perimeter of the doors. If these are not wiped regularly after
a car wash, water can eventually etch the paint to a degree
that may not be restorable. This is especially true in areas
with hard water, as is the case with much of California.
The next step is a clay-bar treatment before any polish
is applied. This is a must! If it’s not done, any microscopic
specs of dust or dirt will be rubbed deeper into the finish.
A spray-detail lubricant is sprayed on the paint (a small section
at a time) before working the clay bar over the surface.
Use your hand to feel whether the section is fully smooth
before moving on. Knead and reform the clay often so you
have a clean surface of the bar in contact with the paint.
Before a applying a one-step cleaner/wax or paste wax,
scratches are attended to. Minor marks on the paint may
respond to a little extra effort with a the cleaner/wax; more
serious ones require polishing or rubbing compound. This
step is always done with care, since we’re talking about
working with a mild abrasive. A last resort to fixing a scratch
is color sanding, which is probably best left to professionals.
When it’s time to apply the final polish or wax, Archer
prefers to use a more absorbent cloth than microfiber pads.
The cloths are such a tight weave that they will sometimes
smear, so the choice comes down to personal preference and
the polish or wax you use. There will be some “cobwebbing,”
or polish marks, when wax is applied. Generally, the
higher the wax content, the more visible the marks.
Another tip: If your windows have been etched by hard
water, using super-fine (0000) steel wool with a glass cleaner
will usually restore them—scrubbing gently, of course.
You may not know that bugs can be just as toxic to the
finish as bird droppings. They should be removed as soon
as possible. Ammonia diluted in water will do the trick in
absence of commercial products. If you’re traveling through
the Valley Of Locusts and don’t have something like Griot’s
Bug Off at your disposal, you can apply Pam baking spray
to the front around the grille and headlights prior to your
drive. We had a testimonial that it does work, and is not
difficult to wash off.
This 90-minute session was packed with information,
and ended with a round of applause for Justin Archer.
Despite this being his first foray into leading a seminar like
this, we assured him that he definitely has another career
path available. He did an outstanding job!
E92/E93. These M
cars consistently
show up en masse,
outnumbering most
of the other BMWs.
For good reason,
too: Autocross presents
a venue to drive
these cars the way
they were meant
to be driven. The
M3—any M3—is an
enthusiast’s car, and
autocross is an enthusiast’s playground.
There were also some non-Bavarian
participants worthy of mention, like
the 1984 Toyota Supra that grabbed
everyone’s rapt attention as it tenaciously
blasted through the course and claimed
the fastest time of the day (with just two
runs). The Honda S2000 also seems to be
a popular autocross car; we had three!
The course proved to be challenging,
fun, and even a bit contentious for some.
The last curve—particularly the slalom
before the finish line—seemed to catch
some of us off guard. The fact that we saw
cars cross the finish line sideways—one
even backwards—made this quite evident!
The lesson learned? Crossing the
finish line sideways is never ideal, but
if you do find yourself facing the wrong
way, you can always finish back-end first.
Most were able to hold it coming
around the last bend, but the approach
(and exit) of the slalom had a handful of
drivers losing it; some even took out the
electronic timer boxes at the finish line.
Fortunately for the rest of us, the timer
boxes came out unscathed. The same
can’t be said for some of the cones.
Autocross represents something different
for each person who participates.
For me, it isn’t about the competition
or even necessarily being behind the
wheel, it’s about the culture. It’s a place
where people from a wide range of interests
and backgrounds can gather, and
instantly have something in common—a
place where no matter how many times
I see a car go around the course, it’s still
compelling to watch. There’s a feeling
of camaraderie among these people that
can’t fully be explained until you’ve spent
a day out there. Whether you’re a veteran
Autocross #1
track junkie or a first-timer, autocross has
something to offer everyone, both behind
the wheel and on the sidelines. If you
want to give it a shot!
ALMS at Laguna Seca May 22!
The first of April brought back the GGC
Meet & Greet to the North Bay area. After
a hiatus of several years, a gathering of the
North Bay area members came together at Cattlemen’s
of Petaluma. I’m sure all the local cowboys thought it
was some sort of April Fools’ joke when they pulled
their pick-‘em-up trucks into in the parking lot and
found it full of BMWs!
Wow—what a great turn out for our first event of the
year! Twenty-one chapter members wined and dined
Cattlemens style. Tammi Hull and Donna Seeley, our
chapter’s president and vice president, also honored us
with their presence. Our group ranged from members
of only a few months to 36-year veterans, which was
pretty much the range for the car ages, too! Conversations
ranged from vintage E30s to vintage wines, and
from great tasting rooms to great tires. The din from
our chatter was a excellent indicator that everyone was
having a good time.
To add some entertainment to the evening, I held a
chocolate-guessing competition. Before the event I purchased
a whole lot of yummy chocolates and put them
into two containers, then asked the attendees to guess
how many there were. Ron Schmitz was the lucky winner,
taking home a beautiful leather-bound book on the
history of the 6 Series. Second place was a tie between
Peter Fisher and Larry Resnick, who got to take home
the chocolates, and third place was newcomer Marie
(sorry, missed the last name!) who scored a stylish tropical
air freshener for her new E90 3 Series.
Thanks to everyone for a fun evening!
2010 Chapter congress discussion (Board)
▪ All chapter officers participated in the 2010 Chapter congress
in Dallas, Texas (March 5-7). It was a great experience and the
board accumulated a lot of interesting ideas during the trip.
▪ Collins received several help requests from other chapters—they
are interested in our communication technologies: Facebook
fan page, e-blast, etc. Collins suggests they could bring laptops
next time and we will help setup things like a Facebook page
during the congress—an example was Dunn’s ability to help
Puget Sound Chapter with Facebook fan page setup at the event.
Collins believes that information-sharing class would be more
useful than social communication training presented at congress.
▪ Everybody agrees on member-retention class being most
interesting and useful.
▪ Board is discussing member-retention plans with help from
dealerships and from National. The best option for gaining new
members would be to get dealers to purchase a membership for
every buyer. Clear dealership presentation explaining pros of
chapter support for dealers would be a valuable start.
▪ Dadgar thought we taught more at the congress than we
learned from it.
▪ Board expresses concern over average age of chapter officers
of other chapters at the congress. Would be nice to see more
board participation from young members
▪ Dadgar expresses concern over National web site redesign
plan. He believes that buying or sponsoring one of the current
popular web sites would be a better investment for the Club.
▪ Seeley says she had a great time—meeting online friends in
real life is always a blast. She expresses concern over lack of
bartenders in hotel’s bar. (Only one poor guy was serving army
of thirsty people Saturday night.)
▪ Kadukin proposes more direct targeting of a young audience.
Chapter should explain values of CCC, autocross, and HPDE as
better alternatives to unwise and expensive car modifications.
▪ Board shares and discusses goals developed during the
congress.
▪ Board expresses concern that some small chapters are doing
more events than we are.
Treasurer’s report (Hull):
▪ We have money. Dadgar and Hull discusses Laguna Seca
HPDE budget. We started the year well by recovering 2009
HPDE money loss.
Driving-events report (Dadgar):
▪ Dadgar continues working on Club Racing challenges. He
expresses a concern over the idea of combining events with other
clubs and groups—such as Spec E30 or Spec Miata—because those
groups are not compatible with BMW CCA Club Racing rules.
▪ Laguna Seca HPDE registration is on track—we have 57 RSVPs
as of today. We need more instructors.
BOARD MEETING MINUTES
MInutES
▪ Costs for Infineon HPDE in September look to be high. Dadgar
expects extra cash from racing program. Every $1,000 contribution
will decrease entry fee by $10. Club Racing school event will be
combined with HPDE. The ideal goal is shrinking two-day HPDE
school price to $600 range.
▫ Seeley points out the fact that Club Racing schools requires
fewer instructors.
▫ Dadgar is trying to arrange to have the Buttonwillow track
as a backup to the Infineon September date.
▪ CCC and Street Survival events for May are canceled—the
Candlestick management gave away our scheduled dates to
KFOG’s KaBoom concert. We will try to reschedule events for
August. March CCC had 45 students. CCC organizers should
start charging helmet-rental fees for real.
▪ Autocross organizers should start helmet-rental fees charging, too.
Social-events report (Hull):
▪ Plans are moving along for the parking corrals for ALMS race at
Laguna Seca in May and for Sonoma Historic races at Infineon in
June. Chapter does not want to sell race tickets directly: tickets
are available through the track offices. Pre-purchased ALMS
corral passes must be picked up at the Will Call office at Embassy
Suites hotel in Seaside.
Area-reps reports (Hull):
▪ No reports
▪ Zampiceni would like to see more events from area reps. Hull
does not want to push area reps.
▪ Chapter is considering online survey that might help with
social-event ideas.
Tech-session report(Kadukin):
▪ Brian Aftanas contacted Kadukin to propose a tech-session idea
at Chevron research facility in Richmond. Kadukin will follow
up with official chapter letter—Chevron facility is secured and
restricted access place and requires some paperwork before
tech-session possibility.
▪ Kadukin continues to talk to Joe Gaffey from Performance
Technic in Pleasanton about a summer tech session possibility.
▪ May 1 ladies-only tech session at Berkeley Motor Works in
Albany is on track.
▪ Seeley proposes motor-oil tech session idea. Board likes the
idea. Kadukin will do the research.
Secretary’s report (Kadukin):
▪ All BMW CCA requested forms are filled and sent to National.
Membership chair’s report (Hull):
▪ None, but we have members.
Vice president’s report (Seeley):
▪ Nothing to add—everything has been covered already.
President’s report (Hull):
▪ Also nothing to add.
Miscellaneous:
▪ Future board meetings time-and-place schedule is under revision.
Some board officers are not happy with current meeting
schedule. Several ideas discussed, but no changes yet. Ball
generously offers his house as a meeting place and it sounds
tempting—discussion to be continued via e-mail.
▪ Kadukin proposes video-editor position idea. Board likes the
idea. Kadukin will talk to Collins about position definition and
call for volunteers.
Meeting adjourns at 2:50 p.m.
March 2010
It looks like Spring has finally sprung—and with
it, we hope, so has your passion for everything
BMW! A lot of you were with us for the Congress
in Dallas, and we very much appreciate that.
2010 Chapter Congress: The BMW CCA’s 2010 Chapter
Congress attracted 62 chapters and 175 chapter leaders to
Dallas over the March 5–7 weekend. Those in attendance had
the opportunity to engage with Rick Barnes and his leadership
seminar. In addition, Jeff Crilley from Real News PR
spoke with the attendees about social/media marketing. The
membership renewal/retention round table was such a huge
success there was an encore presentation on Sunday morning.
Membership numbers continue decline: Membership
retention and recruitment was the topic du jour in Dallas,
and our steadily falling membership totals tell you why.
Throughout late 2008 and all of 2009, BMW’s sales were
down—and so were our BMW CCA membership numbers.
In March, our renewals fell to under 50%. Though our
annual membership loss remained just under 3%, our twoyear
decline rose to 6.10% (as of January 20, it was 5.04%).
Membership retention is primarily a chapter-driven phenomenon,
of course, because the chapters are the vital centers
of Club activity—and only through chapter recruitment and
enough activities to satisfy their members can we hope to
grow the Club. Thank you for your continued efforts in this
regard—we’ll continue to do all that we can on the national
level, but it’s really the work of the chapter volunteers that
make membership in the BMW CCA so worthwhile! We’re
happy to note programs like the San Diego Chapter’s recent
partnership with BMW South County to provide new memberships
for new-car and CPO buyers—but it’s up to all of
us to keep those members once we have them!
Car of Your Dreams Raffle Opens: We spent all winter
waiting for Opening Day. Finally it’s here. No, not baseball—the
BMW Car Club of America 2010 “Car of Your
Dreams Raffle!” April 1st was the day. Buy your tickets
now and get a jump on the competition. The drawing will
take place at Oktoberfest 2010.
What are we competing for this year? The grand prize
winner will be able to choose the car they want, up to a
value of $102,350! (that’s the value of a new M6 - might be
your last chance to get one for a while!). A first prize of up
to $58,400 (can you say M3?) will be awarded along with
multiple main prizes valued at up to $42,650 (335i).
Primary and associate members are entitled to purchase
up to ten (10) tickets each. Take a chance and buy a ticket
today at www.bmwcca-raffle.org. Tomorrow you could be
driving home in the “car of your dreams!” Current BMW
CCA members may purchase tickets online at http://www.
bmwcca-raffle.org, or use the form enclosed with the raffle
mailing sent to your Roundel mailing address. Deadline for
tickets is 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday August 16, 2010.
Oktoberfest 2010: Elkhart Lake and Road America!
O’Fest registration has begun! Visit bmwccaofest.org for
details. Registration opened in
March as scheduled, and if earlybird
registration is any indication,
this will be the most successful
Oktoberfest to date. In addition to
the traditional Oktoberfest activities,
we have two social tours planned;
on Thursday, August 26, there will
be a tour to Milwaukee with visits
to the Harley Davidson Museum
and the Milwaukee Art Museum.
On Friday, August 27, there is a tour
scheduled of the Kohler Design Center and John Michael
Kohler Arts Center.
2010 BMW CCA membership drive: Last year CCA
members participating in our annual membership drive
brought over 900 new members into the Club. That’s a great
number—but it’s not as good as in years past. To keep the
Club growing and healthy, we are launching Project New
Member today! Will you help us?
In the midst of a recovering economy, now is the best
time to be a member of the BMW CCA. No one knows better
than you how vital our discounts and technical help are to
affordably keep your Bimmer on the road. Who has more
fun doing it than we do? (See more info at www.bmwcca.org
or in the ad in this issue. –kk)
Questions? Questions about the 2010 BMW CCA Membership
MEAnWhILE, BACk At thE WREnCh...
Nothing has happened since last Fall, when
Sam the 1976 530i was parted out, Chuck
the 1981 528iA came home to roost, and
Max the 1972 Bavaria was shuffled to offsite storage:
nada. Zip. Zilch. Indeed, there was a veritable work
vacuum in my garage, created largely by cold air, apathy,
and a steady stream of social events centered around
warming, brown liquids from our Scottish friends.
Oh, I bought garage heaters in anticipation of tearing
into Chuck. The replacement starter motor was on the workbench.
The Bavarian Autosport springs were waiting for
their Bilstein counterparts. I had the pretty interior pieces
lined up on shelves, and tools at the ready.
Then the electric garage heaters popped the circuit breaker.
I repackaged and returned them to the store. The draft
from the leaky garage doors was fierce. I bought a propane
heater, but my extra tank was on the downstairs deck under
eight inches of snow. And so the nothing began, and the
vacuum really started to suck.
Winter was harsh to poor Otto the 1991 318is. While the
older children slumbered, Otto pressed on through the snow
and salt, pretending he was a 325ix. But it wasn’t easy for him;
he came through it, but with more rust, more dents, and lower
control-arm ball joints that are spooky-loose. I’m pretty sure I
can get another year out of the brakes. Then there is the nasty
exhaust rattle which will need addressing before I wind up in
a post office with a tube of JB Weld and an automatic weapon.
The bodywork from days gone by is unraveling. What
looked pretty and well-executed two years ago turned to
quick deterioration when bathed in two winters’ worth of
salt spray. There’s a special place in Hell for people who
do shoddy bodywork, and when they arrive, there will be
a picture of Otto and me....wielding a tube of JB Weld and
an automatic weapon.
Otto has been thus deemed the Winter Car. Sucks for
him, but he wasn’t exactly a virgin to begin with.
But now it’s Spring. Like leaves erupting from branches
and for-sale signs sprouting in front yards, my enthusiasm
has been renewed. Maybe it was the small victory of replacing
that starter, buried under the intake tubes and coolant
hoses. Maybe it was how easily the old dashboard came
out. Maybe it was the first spirited drive in Max, running
hard through the gears, feeling the warmth return to the
vintage hardware, remembering why I’ve kept this old
monster around for so long.
Max has a list of fiddly things that have to be accomplished
before we blast out to Road America for Oktoberfest:
new side-window seals, greasing door locks and latches,
replacing the ancient dying Blaupunkt radio, realigning
the doors, replacing the
dashboard and center console,
vanquishing an exhaust
thump—or what I think is an
exhaust thump—the list goes
on, but little of it is crucial to
the car actually arriving in
Elkhart Lake.
But all that has to wait until
Chuck’s interior is put back
together. The old dashboard
is out. Since the under-hood
air-conditioning bits were
removed during the engine
By Papa Jonathan Bush
transplant, I took the time to
pull the remaining hardware
from the interior. I ran the heater tubes and ductwork
through the dishwasher and built one gauge cluster from
two. The old foam has been scraped and new rolls await.
Soon the pretty, uncracked, Vinylex-soaked dashboard will
go in, and I’ll fabricate some sort of non-a/c center console
from the two a/c consoles (1976 and 1981) I have on the shelf.
One of the coolest details on the car is also the most
frustrating: the Cardinal Red interior. Finding replacement
pieces for those which cannot be restored is tough. The door
panels are probably salvageable, but the B-pillar covers,
especially the driver’s side, are absolutely trashed. It’s like
the only people to ever drive the car had extra rivets affixed
to their jeans and dragged themselves across the threshold
every time they entered or exited.
I’m not a huge fan of the Recaro seats found in the 320is,
which were a period-correct upgrade for the E12. Finding red
E28 sport seats to replace the very comfortable, clean, leather
Barcaloungers is going to be a chore—which will probably
mean installing E30 sport seats. And those probably won’t
match the very clean, comfortable, leather rear seat.
All of the interior vinyl is mildly discolored, like every
other original E12 interior that isn’t black or blue. I’ll need
to find some spray dye that matches. Strangely, the black
carpet is still really black, not faded to dark gray. It will
require only a serious cleaning.
Some of the power door locks work sporadically. I think
the windows all work, and I think the sunroof guides need
a clean-and-grease. Of course, I left the box of E12 window
and lock actuators in California when I moved, because,
really, who would ever need those?
There is a slight rush to complete the 528iA interior
rejuvenation so the Bavaria fettling can commence. Max has
to be right, since not only is he transporting my wife and
me, but also our newborn son, Baur Ripken Choy Bush. We
can’t have Dad’s favorite car stranding us in some Wisconsin
backwater, now, can we?
“I can ask Borelli Motor Sports’ on-site mechanic, Scott
Riechers to pull out the car and give him a list of things
to be prepped, and I know the car will be ready and
waiting when I arrive. This way, I get to the track
on-time and fresh, rather than exhausted from
all the running around before a race.”
