Early in 2007, the <strong>Cronkite</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

teamed up with the Meredith Corp.<br />

and KPHO-TV Channel 5 to host<br />

12 <strong>of</strong> the nation’s top minority broadcast<br />

students in a weeklong fellowship program.<br />

<strong>The</strong> students, from universities across<br />

the country, spent a week working<br />

with <strong>Cronkite</strong> faculty and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

reporters, producers, editors and<br />

videographers from the CBS affiliate.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y spent much <strong>of</strong> their time in<br />

the KPHO newsroom and on the road<br />

researching and reporting their stories.<br />

KPHO pr<strong>of</strong>essionals <strong>of</strong>fered instruction on<br />

live reporting, developing winning story<br />

ideas and broadcast ethics. <strong>The</strong>y also gave<br />

advice on how to find a job and shared their<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional experiences, good and bad.<br />

<strong>The</strong> students did a lot more than listen,<br />

though. <strong>The</strong>y created news packages and<br />

produced and wrote a 30-minute newscast<br />

on deadline. As a result, they left the<br />

fellowship with a highly polished tape<br />

showcasing their work.<br />

“Because <strong>of</strong> this fellowship I’m feeling<br />

a lot more confident about landing that<br />

first job,” said Kathy Park, a student at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Maryland.<br />

For <strong>Cronkite</strong> student Sade Malloy, the<br />

highlight <strong>of</strong> the week was the morning<br />

newscast. “Everyone was hilarious,” she<br />

said with a laugh. “<strong>The</strong> work environment<br />

was great.”<br />

This year’s participants were chosen<br />

from a pool <strong>of</strong> more than 50 applicants.<br />

stipends covering travel, lodging and<br />

meals.<br />

assisted in the selection process. According<br />

to Lodato, the fellowship creates a valuable<br />

partnership between the university and<br />

KPHO, and also <strong>of</strong>fers KPHO and the<br />

Meredith Corp. a pipeline to talented<br />

students who soon will be entering the<br />
