Shay, age 15
When I was in seventh grade, I went to Marine
World with my class on a field trip. I went on
this big scary ride and after I got off I peed in my
pants in front of everyone! It was so humiliating!
Samantha, age 13
My best friend slept over one night. When she
got to my house we walked up the stairs to put
her stuff in my room. Right when we walked in,
I remembered that I had left my Bratz dolls out
all over the floor. I don’t usually play with them,
but I was really bored and hadn’t played with
them for a long time. When I remembered I had
left them out, I told my friend to wait outside my
room for a minute. I started cleaning the toys
up and my friend started walking in! When she
saw them she started laughing hysterically!
Brittney, age 17
It was my senior prom and I was looking cute,
and the strap on my shoe kept falling off. When
I reached to fix it, I fell flat on my butt in front
of everybody! It was so embarrassing that even
the staff was laughing at me.
Dear Julie,
I haven’t talked to my friends all
summer and I’m afraid I won’t have
any friends when I get back to
school. What do you think?
–Confused in Carmichael
Dear Confused,
During the summer, your friends have
been just as busy as you are with
activities and family stuff and they will
understand that you haven’t talked in
a while. Give them a call before school
starts and chat about the fun you
had and how you’ve missed hanging
out with them. Let your friends know
you value their friendship and just
because it’s been a while since you’ve
talked, doesn’t mean you’re not still
the best friends you were when school
got out!
Julie
Hey Julie,
My mom is trying to get into hip-hop
and she embarrasses me in front of
my friends by trying to dance with
us when we’re listening to music
or watching music videos. How do I
tell her that she’s embarrassing me
without hurting her feelings?
–Embarrassed in Empire
Hey Embarassed…
Your mom is trying to be your friend!
If she’s tying to dance with you and
your friends I bet she’s got some
great moves from her days. Ask her to
teach you the way she danced in junior
high and high school and see what you
can learn. Share with her different
moves that you know that would
make her a better dancer too. Still
embarrassed of her trying to hang
out with your friends? Let her know
by saying something like, “Mom, I really
appreciate that you want to hang out
with my friends, but sometimes you
embarrass me a little.” I am sure she
will understand you and you can come
to an agreement. Keep dancin’!
Julie
Hey Julie,
I recently got a boyfriend and he
doesn’t like my guy best friend, it’s
really hard to even get them to hang
out in the same group, what do I do?
–Too much in Tracy
Hey Too Much…
Sounds like you are dealing with too
much. I think you should talk to your
boyfriend first. Let him know you and
your friend are just friends, if you
wanted to be dating him, you wouldn’t
be with your boyfriend, right? Tell him
that just as there are great qualities
that he appreciates in you, your best
friend is great too! Also let your best
friend know that sometimes you just
want to hang out with your boyfriend.
He’ll get the picture. If your boyfriend
doesn’t understand, you need to
really think about what is more
important here. Your BEST friend or
the boyfriend you just got.
