20 Absurdity Day
That’s just plain absurd.

e heard that…
…starting a new school is scary!
However, you don’t have to worry, because Hear and Now has some helpful tips on how to get your grounding in
a new school. The most important thing is to keep an open mind. At a new school, you will meet all new people,
have a different schedule, different teachers, and have access to different sports and clubs. Take advantage of this!
Talk to people at your school. Join clubs and try out for sports. Some teams won’t cut you, so if you’ve always
wanted to be on a swim team but have never done so before, now is the chance to try it! Raise your hand in class
and make sure teachers know your name. Remember, you always want to stay true to yourself. Just because you’re
at a new school doesn’t mean you have to have a new personality. Find friends who will accept you for who you
are and do things that you enjoy. We wish you the best of luck!
…we’re a
new council!
On June 1, 2007, Girl Scouts of Tierra
del Oro and Girl Scouts Muir Trail Council
officially merged and became Girl Scouts
Heart of Central California. So we’re now
bigger and better than ever, with a mind
for the future! Plus, we get to do a little
bit more shopping–all our old Girl Scout
stuff with the old council names has to be
replaced with our brand new HCC logo.
(See page 11 for great new shop items!)
HCC reaches from Colusa County, down
through Merced County, all the way from
the edge of Vacaville and along the crest
of the Sierra Mountains.
…it’s time to start thinking
about a destination!
Want to travel? Want to learn new things and see new places? Want to make
new friends from around the country? Go on a destination! Travel out of the
country to Mexico, Sweden, or India. Stay in the country and go to Savannah,
Georgia, New York City, Kansas City, Missouri, or Santa Monica, California.
There’s a destination for everyone! Each destination has a different application
deadline, so make sure you check that. Some applications are due as early as
November. The council can help you with money earning and scholarships.
For more information, go to www.girlscoutshcc.org/og_destinations.html

…Girl Scouts is on the web!
There’s a special section just for you, called “For Girls.” You can find it on
the home page or go directly to www.girlscoutshcc.org/forgirls.html.
Are you on myspace? Put Girl Scouts on your friends list! Look us up at
www.myspace.com/girlscoutshcc.
…you can be a spokeswoman for the council!
My journey began last year with a training where we learned the ropes on being an effective spokeswoman.
Later that day, we filmed a video on cookie sales to be distributed throughout council. That was a LOT of fun.
Then, last January, I was given the opportunity to go on Sacramento and Co. to do a cooking segment. I was
so excited! The recipe I decided to demonstrate was: Raspberry Chocolate Cheesecake Cups, using the Little
Brownie Girl Scout Cookie!
If you are interested in being a spokeswoman for the council e-mail MarComm@girlscoutshcc.org! They will
contact you and get you ready for your big debut; even if you’ve never done something like this before. There
are so many opportunities and best of all…it is so much fun!
Contributed by Jessica, 15
A few years ago, 16-yearold
Kristyn Heath, a Girl
Scout since “the middle
of sixth grade,” got an
iPod for her birthday, but
when she and her iPodless
friends hung out,
the iPod was suddenly
not such a blessing. Her friends like to
share their music, and Kristyn couldn’t do it with her iPod: if
you share earbuds, only two people can listen. “I don’t have just
one friend, and I wanted to share music with all my friends,”
she explained. And so began the three-year-long journey to
NoeStringAttached. Kristyn started drawing designs for a device
that would allow her to use radio waves to share music. She
showed the drawings to her dad, who took them to an engineer,
who then referred them to another engineer in China. It “took a lot
to get to the product we have now, and we went through a lot of
prototypes and stages,” says Kristyn. At last, NoeStringAttached
made its debut at Kristyn’s high school, where it made the school
…a Bay Area Girl Scout
is quite an entrepreneur!
newspaper. Her dad used a contact at NBC to get a story on
the air, and after that, everything snowballed. Kristyn went to
New York to do a tape for MSNBC. She describes her current
campaign as “viral” and “word of mouth.”
If you want to share your music, you can look NoeStringAttached
up on SnoopTunes.com. And if you don’t have an iPod, don’t
worry: NoeStringAttached will work with any MP3 player or CD
player. Plug the NoeStringAttached in where you normally plug
headphones in, flip the switch to TX, you’re transmitting a radio
signal. Anyone with a NoeStringAttached and headphones can
listen in by switching to RX–receiving–as long as they’re within
15 feet of you. Sound like something you want? You can swing
by the GSHCC Council Shop and pick one up.
Kristyn says that anyone who wants to be a successful
entrepreneur like herself needs perseverance. It took her three
years to get her product to where it is now, and she ran into a lot
of obstacles.“You have to believe in your product and you will
overcome the obstacles you face.” Sage advice from a bright girl.

My 5 Faves
When you are in school you want to carry as little as possible
around with you at all times. You can get ready in the morning
and stay looking fresh all day when you choose products that
really do the job. I have a few items I count on everyday, here
they are:
• L’Oreal True Match foundation because it is lightweight
and has a compact mirror.
• For eye shadow I
use a quad pack of
eye shadows. It consists
of a lid shadow, a crease
shadow, brow shadow and an
outer corner shadow for the
full effect. Read below to find
the color that goes with your eyes!
• I also chose Physician’s Formula swirl bronzer and highlighter. It gives a
great glow effect!
• For mascara I love L’Oreal Telescopic mascara to lengthen your lashes.
• For lip gloss I love L’Oreal Colour Juice lip gloss for a refined look.
Shay, age 15
When I was in seventh grade, I went to Marine
World with my class on a field trip. I went on
this big scary ride and after I got off I peed in my
pants in front of everyone! It was so humiliating!
Samantha, age 13
My best friend slept over one night. When she
got to my house we walked up the stairs to put
her stuff in my room. Right when we walked in,
I remembered that I had left my Bratz dolls out
all over the floor. I don’t usually play with them,
but I was really bored and hadn’t played with
them for a long time. When I remembered I had
left them out, I told my friend to wait outside my
room for a minute. I started cleaning the toys
up and my friend started walking in! When she
saw them she started laughing hysterically!
Brittney, age 17
It was my senior prom and I was looking cute,
and the strap on my shoe kept falling off. When
I reached to fix it, I fell flat on my butt in front
of everybody! It was so embarrassing that even
the staff was laughing at me.
Dear Julie,
I haven’t talked to my friends all
summer and I’m afraid I won’t have
any friends when I get back to
school. What do you think?
–Confused in Carmichael
Dear Confused,
During the summer, your friends have
been just as busy as you are with
activities and family stuff and they will
understand that you haven’t talked in
a while. Give them a call before school
starts and chat about the fun you
had and how you’ve missed hanging
out with them. Let your friends know
you value their friendship and just
because it’s been a while since you’ve
talked, doesn’t mean you’re not still
the best friends you were when school
got out!
Julie
Hey Julie,
My mom is trying to get into hip-hop
and she embarrasses me in front of
my friends by trying to dance with
us when we’re listening to music
or watching music videos. How do I
tell her that she’s embarrassing me
without hurting her feelings?
–Embarrassed in Empire
Hey Embarassed…
Your mom is trying to be your friend!
If she’s tying to dance with you and
your friends I bet she’s got some
great moves from her days. Ask her to
teach you the way she danced in junior
high and high school and see what you
can learn. Share with her different
moves that you know that would
make her a better dancer too. Still
embarrassed of her trying to hang
out with your friends? Let her know
by saying something like, “Mom, I really
appreciate that you want to hang out
with my friends, but sometimes you
embarrass me a little.” I am sure she
will understand you and you can come
to an agreement. Keep dancin’!
Julie
Hey Julie,
I recently got a boyfriend and he
doesn’t like my guy best friend, it’s
really hard to even get them to hang
out in the same group, what do I do?
–Too much in Tracy
Hey Too Much…
Sounds like you are dealing with too
much. I think you should talk to your
boyfriend first. Let him know you and
your friend are just friends, if you
wanted to be dating him, you wouldn’t
be with your boyfriend, right? Tell him
that just as there are great qualities
that he appreciates in you, your best
friend is great too! Also let your best
friend know that sometimes you just
want to hang out with your boyfriend.
He’ll get the picture. If your boyfriend
doesn’t understand, you need to
really think about what is more
important here. Your BEST friend or
the boyfriend you just got.
new friends and made a stronger bond with a friend I
came with. Here’s a recap of our amazing week!
Tuesday/Day 1: We started off by splitting into small
groups and created our own businesses. These
businesses included: The Perfect Purse, a customized
purse store; So So Def Doc Records, a music video;
and recording studio, Elipunk, a clothing line with a
unique signature, an elephant’s rear!, and last but
not least, The Blue Diamond Café, featuring their
signature drink, The Peanut Butter Chocolate Dream!
It was a great first day and we really got creative!
Wednesday/Day 2: We hopped on a tour bus and
made a trip to IKEA where our group had a private tour
of the showrooms before the store officially opened.
At lunch, we talked to three women about running this
international business, while we snacked on some
yummy foods that originated from Sweden, IKEA’s
home country!
Thursday/Day 3: This was personally
my favorite day! We climbed back
on our tour bus (yes, it was ours all
week!) and headed for Westfield’s
Downtown Plaza Mall! Once we
got there we met with a woman
who strategically decides where
to place the shops and advertisement. We also
had lunch at the Hard Rock Café and got to know
about their marketing approach. Plus, we even
got a little shopping done too!
Friday/Day 4: We boarded the bus one last time
for a day of college tours. We visited University of
California, Davis, Sacramento City College, and
California State University, Sacramento. We had a
private tour of each campus from current students
at the colleges and learned how we could pursue
a business based major.
I had a BLAST and would like to thank Ashley Mastin
for putting this on! It was extremely informational
and I am positive that this information will be very
useful in my life. If you missed this event and
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci
by Diana Wynne Jones. Think you know magic? Think again.
Jones takes normal plot ideas and twists it into something
brand new. Enter a world where most people are magicians, but
only one is the Chrestomanci–a powerful magician with nine
lives. The writing is fun and easy to read and is well suited to
girls in middle school. If you’re a history buff, Jones has put in
references of historical events and older books, which is fun, but
even if history isn’t your favorite subject, these books are great!
The books come mostly in two packs, and there are four books
total. Read them all!
The Hobbit and The Lord of the
Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. This epic tale of an evil ring and
the courage of simple, ordinary folk is one of the most widely
read fiction series of all times, and it holds this title for a reason.
Tolkien effortlessly weaves the ancient history of the world in
with the story of the Fellowship of the Ring, who go on a quest,
fight evil, and make friends. Think of Tolkien’s books as levels:
start out with The Hobbit, a friendly, simple book that’s fun to
read, then move on to The Lord of the Rings (a series of three
books), which is much darker (since it was written after Tolkien
fought in World War I) and a little more complicated to read. If
you really loved all four books, read The Silmarillion, a Biblelike
book that narrates the history of Middle Earth before The
Lord of the Rings. Afterwards, you can watch the movies, with
parental permission.
PLUS! Just looking for a single book to read? Look up Lloyd
Alexander, author of more than forty books, including The
Arkadians, The First Two Lives of Lucas-Kasha and Time Cat.
His writing style is easy to read and filled with jokes, so you’ll
soon be laughing out loud–literally. Alexander has written a lot
of books, including some series, so you can be sure that you
will find something that you will enjoy.
Hard Hats
Required!
Me and my buddy!
I never realized what I was getting into when I asked my mom
to sign me up for an Under Construction program at Camp
Menzies, two years ago. Sure, I new we were building a staff
sleeping cabin, but I didn’t fully comprehend the possibilities
of who would meet, what I would see, and, most importantly,
what I would learn.
In addition to the awesome Girl Scout related camp activities,
a few of the construction related things we learned were how
to use a skill saw, what the terms “plumb” and “level” meant,
what Simpson Strong Ties were, and basic safety on the job
site. BTW…check out the teen page on the web to see a
short video of us! www.girlscoutshcc.org/og_funstuff.html
As well as first hand instruction, me and my fellow girls
received a complete set of tools, generously donated by
Tomboy Tools, a company that makes tools especially with
women in mind. In addition, we received a hard hat and
safety glasses courtesy of McCarthy construction.
This year’s program was much more exciting than last
year’s, with a more in-depth repertoire of construction related
skills to learn.
If you’re still wondering why you would want to go, here are
a few reasons.
• The first is that you will learn all about construction and
how to use tools that you might have to use around your
house in the future. Things like a hammer or a level if you
need to install a shelf or something else.
• You also make tons of friends. By the third day, all of us
had memorized each other’s names and we all acted like
we had known each other for years.
• The opportunities are immense. I didn’t really know what
I wanted to be when I grew up, but after two consecutive
years of attendance, I know that I want to be a construction
attorney. There are so many jobs related to construction
that are available to women in a diverse array of fields.
I highly recommend considering going for Under Construction
2008, because of all the opportunities and all the friends
you’ll make. For one thing, you can count on seeing me
there, as I plan on attending for the third year. Check out the
