Dear Parents and Families:
We hope you enjoyed yourselves at the 2012 Glenville State College
Homecoming festivities. Pete and I certainly did at the many events
including the coronation ceremony. Pete and I are always so happy to
participate in that. We congratulate Bradley Benson of Glenville in Gilmer
County, West Virginia and Amelia Park of Shepherdstown in Jefferson
County, West Virginia for serving as our King and Queen respectively as
well as the rest of our homecoming court. It was wonderful seeing all of
the smiling faces along the parade route in downtown Glenville. We had
a little help waving to the crowd from our adorable grandson, J.P. He
absolutely loves
parades and
rode with us
in our car
again this year.
Thanks to all of
you who visited
with us during
the tailgate
party and the
football game on
Homecoming Royalty:
October 27th.
King Bradley Benson and Queen Amelia Park We were thrilled
our Pioneer football team was victorious that day against the
University of Charleston with a final score of 14-10. Our head
coach Dave Hutchison, his staff, and, of course, the players
did a fabulous job and made us all proud to be Pioneers. Pete and I with J.P. in the Homecoming Parade lineup
Senior Ed Scott (Chloe, WV), junior Jamie Stanley
(Point Pleasant, WV), former GSC student Justin Blankenship
(Gassaway, WV), senior Ryan Konarske (Gandeeville, WV),
and junior Samantha Wolford (Buckhannon, WV) in the WV
Veterans’ Legacy Project multimedia production of Morning Stars.
Speaking of pride, we just had a series of wonderful
West Virginia Veterans’ Legacy Project events in
time for the Veterans Day Holiday. As you may
recall, the project was made possible thanks to a
grant from the United States Institute of Museum
and Library Services and has allowed us to record
and preserve stories from West Virginia veterans of
all eras since World War II. The information has
now been turned into a play that was presented on
our campus two nights in a row and an hour-long
documentary you may have watched when it aired
twice on West Virginia Public Broadcasting. A lot
of people are also purchasing our Veterans’ Legacy
Project book called Heroes Among Us, and many
say it will make a nice holiday gift. A beautiful
veterans photography exhibit is also on display in
our Fine Arts Center Art Gallery through the end
of the year, so we hope you can stop by and enjoy it before it moves on
to the Beckley V-A Hospital in early 2013. Project Director Bob Henry
Baber and Archivist Jason Gum as well as all of their helpers put in so
much time and effort toward all of the products that have come out of
this endeavor. We can’t thank them enough and feel this project is our
way of thanking our veterans.
You can also learn a lot about the West Virginia Veterans’ Legacy
Project in our new Glenville State College magazine, Pioneer Progress.
Pete and I are so proud of this stunning 36-page publication that has
a variety of information about our school. We applaud the employees
in the GSC Public Relations and Marketing Department who worked
around the clock to make it happen. We’ve enclosed a picture of the
cover page that features Pete holding his military service photo. Do you
recognize him? After digging it out and showing it off, he’s been telling
everybody what a handsome lad he was back then! If you didn’t receive
a copy of the magazine and would like one, please let us know.
We want you to know how well three of our criminal justice students
did at a crime scene investigation competition during the West
Virginia Criminal Justice Educators Association’s annual conference.
Congratulations to criminal justice majors Aaron Parsons, a senior
from Walton (Roane County), West Virginia; Kyla Spencer, a junior
from Williamstown (Wood
County), West Virginia; and Garrett Rinehart, a sophomore
from Cumberland, Maryland. They tied for first place at
the end of the competition but lost in a tie breaker which
put them in second place. Assistant Professor of Criminal
Justice Kelly Treece took the students to the event at the
end of October and says the results reflect very positively
on both our college and our criminal justice program.
We are pleased to learn we will be hosting that same state
competition in 2014. Kelly says the students are now
preparing to compete again at the national level during
the American Criminal Justice Association Conference in
Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in April of next year. Way to
go Aaron, Kyla, and Garrett, and good luck in the spring!
Hancock County, West Virginia. Their idea is a delivery service for local restaurants. Business Department Professors
Cinda Echard and Cheryl McKinney always do such a nice job working with the students and helping them prepare
to enter. They say it’s a way for our students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real life and possibly turn
their dreams of future businesses into realities.
We were so impressed to learn great news about
sophomore Kevin Smith of Franklin in Pendleton
County, West Virginia. He was one of four national
finalists for the National Future Farmers of America
Agricultural Proficiency Award in Poultry Production
– Entrepreneurship/Placement. As a member of
the Pendleton County FFA Chapter, he competed
for the award at the national finals during the 85th
National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana
Kevin Smith
from October 24th through 27th. He won $500 and
received a beautiful plaque commemorating the special day.
It is amazing to know that some of our students are putting what
they learn here at GSC to use in another country. Seniors Marilynn
Burkowski of Hollis in York County, Maine and Ryan Thomas of St.
Albans in Kanawha County, West Virginia traveled to Fukuoka, Japan in
2011. Burkowski then packed for another trip she took earlier this year
with senior Ethan Epling of Spencer in Roane County, West Virginia.
Marilynn Burkowski, Dr. Rico Gazal,
and Ethan Epling in Fukuoka, Japan.
Area children help Pete and J.P. turn on the lights to the campus
Christmas tree at last year’s tree lighting ceremony
Forestry Professor Dr. Rico Gazal accompanied them
on the adventure to study the Tree-of-Heaven in a
climate different from Glenville’s. Dr. Gazal says they
are trying to understand what makes the tree such a
successful species in two very different climates. Pete
and I thought this was a fascinating story and wanted
you to learn about this wonderful trip they recently
experienced.
We will officially be getting into the holiday spirit
during our annual campus tree lighting ceremony
on Monday, November 26th in the GSC Luanna T.
Smith Amphitheatre. You and your family members
are invited to join us and see Pete turn on the ‘Pioneer
blue’ lights at 4:30 p.m. After that, we will move over
to the Mollohan Campus Community Center where
Santa Claus will be waiting to have his picture taken
with the children who attend, while Mrs. Claus will be
serving cookies and hot cocoa.
There is another free holiday event we are having that
we wanted to invite you to as well. It will be a holiday concert performed by our very talented GSC Choir and
Chamber Singers. We thank Assistant Professor of Music Teresa Dody for working so hard to direct this fantastic
show. While most of our concerts are held in our state-of-the art Fine Arts Center Auditorium, this one will take
place on Tuesday, November 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the Sand Fork Baptist Church about fifteen miles from the campus.
Teresa tells us the evening will feature Christmas carols written from as far back as the 17th century. We look forward
to listening to the readings from our own students, faculty, and staff including Pete himself.
We will close for now, so we can pack our bags for our Thanksgiving week travels to visit family and friends. Pete and
I hope you enjoy your visit with your students while they are home on their holiday break. Tell them we will see them
when they return to campus on Monday, November 26th. We hope to also see you on our campus very soon!
Until next time,
Pete and Betsy
