Blue Devils and US Soccer<br />

The <strong>Duke</strong> Blue Devils and US Soccer have a strong and longstanding relationship. <strong>Duke</strong> alumni have participated<br />

with US Soccer for many years, with Tom Kain and Evan Whitfi eld each representing the United States<br />

in the Olympic Games. Blue Devils have participated with US Soccer on all levels, ranging from youth teams to<br />

the U.S. Men's National Team. Here is a look at some of the ties between <strong>Duke</strong> and US Soccer.<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> has hosted exhibitions with the U.S.<br />

Olympic Team and with the Under-17 National<br />

Teams.<br />

Evan Whitfield, a 1998 <strong>Duke</strong> graduate,<br />

represented the United States on the Olympic<br />

Team in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney,<br />

Australia.<br />

1985 Hermann Trophy recipient Tom Kain<br />

represented the United States in the 1984<br />

Olympics in Los Angeles, Calif.<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> sophomore, Michael Videira has played with<br />

both the US Under-20 and US Under-<strong>18</strong> National<br />

Teams.<br />

Robert Russell became the latest Blue<br />

Devil to train with the U.S. Men’s National<br />

Team this year. Others who have been invited<br />

to play with the full team include Jason Kreis,<br />

Mark Dodd, Jay Heaps, Evan Whitfield,<br />

John Kerr and Brian Benedict.<br />

2004 <strong>Duke</strong> graduate Jordan Cila played<br />

on the US Under-17 National Team that was a<br />

semifi nalist at the Under-17 World Championships<br />

in New Zealand. Cila ranked second<br />

on the team with 46 goals and 38 assists.<br />

Cila also was a member of the US Under-20<br />

National Team.<br />

Brian Kelly competed with the Under-23<br />

National Team prior to the 2000 Olympic<br />

Games in Sydney.<br />

Current junior Kyle Helton was a member<br />

of the National Team program from 2000-04.<br />

He played for the US Under-17 National Team in<br />

2002 and 2003, starting 42 of 63 games played.<br />

Current Blue Devils Justin Papadakis,<br />

Michael Videira and Ian Carey, as well as<br />

alumni Jordan Cila, Trevor Perea, Kevin<br />

Sakuda and Jay Heaps, have competed with<br />

the US Under-20 National Team.<br />

Current Blue Devils who played with the US<br />

Under-<strong>18</strong> National team include Justin Papadakis,<br />

Michael Videira, Tomek Charowski,<br />

Pavelid Castaneda and Mike Grella.<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> alumni Joey Valenti, George Dunne,<br />

Tom Stone, Mike Linenberger and Clint Carnell<br />

gained youth national team experience.<br />

Mike Linenberger, who played for the Blue<br />

Devils from 1983-86, is the current Region IV<br />

ODP coach and the head men’s soccer coach<br />

at Sacramento State <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Alumni Bob Jenkins (U.S. Soccer’s Director<br />

of Coaching Education and Youth Development)<br />

and Ken Lolla (Under-15 head coach)<br />

have both coached with the US Soccer youth<br />

national team programs in the past.<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> junior, Kyle Helton, became a familiar face on<br />

the US National Team, playing from 2000-04. He<br />

played two years with the US Under-17 team.<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> freshman, Mike Grella, was a member of this<br />

year's US Under-<strong>18</strong> National Team along with freshman<br />

Pavelid Castaneda.<br />

1986 National Player of the Year John Kerr was a<br />

member of the U.S. team<br />

Bob Jenkins was one of the fi rst players to suit up<br />

for John Rennie and took what he learned from his<br />

former coach and applied it as a former US National<br />

Team Under-<strong>18</strong> Head Coach.
