BSc(Hons)
Interior Design
Questions & Answers
Why is this a BSc(Honours) degree
and not a MA or BA?
The essence of the programme is to
underpin high quality interior design with
management, environmental and
technological issues.
Do I apply through UCAS?
Yes, most definitely, and better to have
your application in to them early.
Can I articulate from any institution in
the UK offering an HND in Interior
Design?
Yes, and also from many foreign
institutions. This will be clarified when
you apply.
Do I receive an interview?
Selection is by portfolio and sketch book
review. However you may be asked to
attend an interview.
What essential ingredient should a
student on the programme
consistently develop?
An integrated approach to design.
What are the employment prospects?
The nature of the degree produces a
high calibre professional for the real
world and essentially a very marketable
product in the design industries.
Programme Features & Benefits
Study Tours
Students have the opportunity to spend a week studying best
practice and innovative design in world centres of excellence.
Recent tours have been to Milan, Barcelona and Copenhagen,
where students have the opportunity to study some of the major
schools of design and see some examples in use. For example
EMBT (Enric Miralles - Benedetta Tagliabue) & Estudio Mariscal.
Links with Other Universities
Our links with universities in other countries e.g. Lahti in Finland,
allows the opportunity for the most promising students to spend an
entire semester studying abroad.
Final Year Exhibition
Completing students are given the opportunity to exhibit their work
at the degree exhibition organised in June every year and held in
the award-winning Saltire Centre. This event is well attended by
potential employers, designers and other interested parties.
The Glasgow Caledonian University Gold Medal for Interior
Design
This is awarded every year to the most outstanding final year
student.
Links with Industry
The programme has been developed to ensure that teaching
modules reflect and develop current best practice and cater for
the needs of employers. As a result, graduates are well equipped
to gain fulfilling and well paid employment on completion of the
programme.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have completed an HND (or equivalent) in interior
design in any recognised institution in the UK or abroad. In
addition, they must have gained merits and have developed a
quality design portfolio.
The standard of this portfolio is assessed before a decision is
taken on granting entry to the programme.
Do you have creative design flair and a desire to
influence the way buildings are used? Are you
interested in what’s happening in the design centres of
the world?
Professional Careers
in the Built & Natural Environment
The UK construction industry is the single biggest industry
sector in the economy, contributing almost 10% of Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) and employing one in ten of the working
population.
The sector is dynamic and increasingly committed to innovative
practices and the development of a culture of professionalism.
Careers in the industry are varied, challenging and, invariably,
well paid.
The School of the Built and Natural Environment (BNE) at
Glasgow Caledonian University is one of the largest producers of
graduates into the construction and property industries in the UK.
It is at the leading edge of providing professional training for people
wishing to take up key positions in the development and
management of construction and the built environment.
It brings together in one School, a comprehensive range of
programmes and subjects geared towards professional careers in
all aspects of construction and property, including their
environmental impact.
Profession Description & Career
Prospects
Interior Design is increasingly recognised as a valued discipline in
the constantly evolving sphere of the design and construction of
buildings.
The programme allows graduates, not only to develop their design
flair and creative ability, but also to underpin this with a sound
understanding of management principles and awareness of
technology, environmental sustainable design and costs.
To achieve this, the programme integrates a number of study
areas:
• Design creativity
• Environmental Science
• Technology
• Design Management & Practice
• Sustainability
• Computer Aided Design.
Graduates take up key policy-making roles, where they influence
the design process from design inception to completion, in a variety
of organisations, including:
• Architecture
• Interior Design
• Health Authorities
• Interior fit-out
• Space planning
• Museum and Exhibition
• Television, film and stage.
Programme Outline & Content
Levels 1 & 2
Years 1 and 2 - successfully undertaking an HND (or equivalent) in
Interior Design in any recognised institution in the UK or abroad,
for example Glasgow Metropolitan College.
Level 3
The emphasis in this year is to understand principles in a number
of areas including:
• Environmental design
• The costs of design and construction methods and materials
• Using computer aided design
• An awareness of the practical aspects in translating and
implementing the visual design proposal
A number of integrated design projects are undertaken by students
in this year, to allow them to put their learning into practice. This is
also the year when the study tour takes place.
Level 4
This year is geared towards preparing students for their careers,
by advancing and consolidating the principles and knowledge
acquired in level 3, while providing ample opportunities to study
examples of best practice in contemporary design throughout
the world.
Assessed projects as chosen by students are undertaken during
this year, to allow students to demonstrate their grasp of
integrating both design flair with practical application and the need
to work to deadlines.
Professional Recognition
The BSc (Honours) Programme is fully accredited by the Institute
of Professional Designers, and graduates may apply for
membership on successful completion of the programme.
Design Competition Work and
Competition Success
Jamie Cook was a final year BSc(Hons) Interior Design student
when he won the prestigious Royal Society of Arts top prize in
their annual “Design Directions” competition
Facing entries from throughout the United Kingdom, Jamie
brought home the award for his futuristic design and won £800 first
prize. Jamie subsequently gained his honours degree, the Gold
Medal for most outstanding Interior Design Student at Glasgow
Caledonian University, and full-time employment with Reid
Architecture, one of the leading design practices in the UK.
Design competitions are, and will continue to be, encouraged
where appropriate, in the development of the Interior Design
student at Glasgow Caledonian University.
“ The consistently high standard of
students over the years has been
the reason we have been able to
offer summer placements. It was
therefore no surprise that, when
our workload required an injection
of fresh talent, we were able to offer
full-time employment to one
particularly outstanding student.”
David Brown
Barr Technical Services
“ We have found the students to
have an exemplary sense of design
and spatial awareness together with
sufficient grounding in the technical
aspects of design to allow them to
become employable designers once
they have left full-time study”
Dominic Notarangelo
Padrino Design
What employers think?
Careers in the industry are
varied, challenging and
invariably well paid.
