his body. None of these claims can
be regarded as definitively
substantiated and it is certainly the
usual procedure for plane crash
victims to be buried 'closed casket'
due to their injuries.
Whether Mantell was a victim of
his own excitement, or whether he
was struck down by an alien force
resisting his pursuit of their saucer
can now never be proven. However,
the light Mantell chased was, by any
sensible definition, a UFO and
therefore we can rightly regard
Mantell's death as the first
attributed to a UFO encounter.
Above An artist's impression of Mantell's
P-51 Mustang training plane climbing
towards the UFO high over Godman Field
in
Kentucky. Other planes in the flight
turned back at a lov^/er altitude but Mantell
pressed on. Minutes later he was dead.
Speculation with regard to what he was
chasing continues to this day. Was it a
weather balloon, a star, the planet Venus,
or a craft from another world?
Right Captain Thomas Mantell.
