PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE
For most people, photographic evidence is perhaps the most
convincing ol all material used to substantiate a sighting. In
lad, photographs can easily mislead and confuse rather than
clarity a case. Very few credible cases are supported by
photographs, and many photographs that do exist are vague
and give very little information about the origin of a UFO
phenomenon. No photograph, however thought-provoking, has
yet been able to prove satisfactorily that UFOs are extraterrestrial
spaceships.
Nevertheless, photographs are of use in support of witness
testimony. If the image in the photographs is consistent with
the story line given by the witness, then the case gains strength
from the added weight of evidence. If the photographs tell a
different story, then almost certainly the case is a hoax. Many
photographs indicate the presence of UFOs but subseguent
analysis proves otherwise. Often, people will 'snap' pictures on
holiday only to find, when examining the developed prints, that
disc-shaped objects appear in the sky. Sometimes these are
established to be lens flares (which can have remarkable
symmetry and apparent solidity) or tricks of the light.
Modern
analysis can expose these photographs as such. In one such
case BUFORA received a photograph showing a disc in the sky
which had not been noticed at the time the photograph was
taken. The witness was convinced of the extra-terrestrial origin
ol the 'craft' shown but close study of the negative revealed it lo
be a lens Hare.
Occasionally, photographs last a long time belore being
exposed in this way. The photograph below was taken on 16
July 1952 at Salem, Massachusetts during a wave ol sightings.
It
was case number 1501 in the US Air Force's Project Blue
Book. The photograph seems lo show lights in the air over the
Coast Guard Facility. In lad, the photograph was taken through
a glass window, and modern analysis suggests that the images
are rellecfed lights Irom somewhere inside the building, which
quite possibly went unnoticed by the photographer at the time
who would have been concentrating on the 'dimming' and
'brightening' of the lights as he lined up to take the photograph.
Of course when strange lights appear in the sky over a Coast
Guard facility one can understand to some extent how a
photographer might leap to false conclusions.
