The Salvation Army Corps Community Center in
Council Bluffs, Iowa is experiencing an opportunity
of a lifetime. On July 26th a Groundbreaking
Ceremony was held for the Charles E. Lakin Human
Services Campus. The campus will house five
different social service agencies: The Salvation Army,
Boys & Girls Club, American Red Cross, Heartland
Family Service and MICAH House.
This has been a collaborative effort between all five
agencies. A main goal for the Lakin Campus is
to give people just one place to go for services. A
family can stay on the campus, and the children can
be involved in activities offered at the other agencies.
Commander
Dear Friends,
My wife and I are thrilled to be
joining you as the new leaders
of The Salvation Army’s ministry
in the Western Division. Dawn
and I have been officers in The
Salvation Army for 23 years
including appointments in St.
Cloud, MN; Peoria, IL; Topeka,
KS; Kansas City, MO; Grand
Rapids, MI and Chicago, IL.
For the past four years, we have
been the Divisional leaders for the Heartland
Division which includes 25 Corps throughout
portions of Central Illinois and Eastern Iowa.
We have three children, Michael, 23; Michele,
the only one who has joined us in Omaha.
Michael was recently married and he and his
wife, Linnea, live in the New York City area.
Michele is a sophomore at the University of
Illinois. Dawn and I are both children of
Salvation Army Officer parents and we have
strived to model our lives after their Godly
examples.
Our hope for the Western Division of The
Salvation Army is that we can continue
“Doing the Most Good’ for those we serve
through the generous support of wonderful
Ringing In The O!
Ringing in the O!, the second annual 36-hour bell ringing
marathon, is a partnership with The Omaha Chamber of
Commerce O! Campaign. In its first year proceeds from the
marathon boosted contributions to The Salvation Army’s
2006 Red Kettle Campaign by $35,000.
This year, Ringing in the O! volunteers will ring at several metro Omaha
locations. Members of the local media, civic leaders and other volunteers will be
invited to contribute an hour or two to the bell ringing marathon. The two-day
event begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 14th, and continues through
11:00 p.m., December 15th.
Once again our Ringing In The O! Grand Marshal is KFAB talk show host, Tom
Becka. Tom will be live on location throughout the event. Tune in to 1110 KFAB
The Salvation Army is seeking participation from corporate partners, civic
groups and other organizations to ring the bells. This is a great opportunity for
groups such as college fraternities and sororities, church youth groups, civic and
professional organizations, and individual businesses to get active in a wonderful
tradition during the holiday season.
KaBOOM – U Play University
comes to the Des Moines Citadel
The new playground replaces an old strip of grass and adds a bright and
visually attractive playground for children visiting the Des Moines Citadel
Corps Community Center and children in the surrounding neighborhood.
On May 17, 2007 a new playground was built in one day through
funding and support from the KaBOOM Foundation, Home Depot, The
Salvation Army and community volunteers.
This project has made a positive visual statement for the Corps and more
importantly, the surrounding neighborhood.
“The ‘playground build’ did take a lot of work in getting everything
ready to be built in just one day but it was more than worth the effort,”
said Des Moines Citadel Corps secretary, Della Miller.
The KaBOOM Foundation, located in Washington, D.C., has a vision of
providing “a great place to play within walking distance of every child
in America”. The foundation leads in selecting play space build projects
that will strengthen communities across the nation. KaBOOM supports
action locally to build an infrastructure that will promote, create
and sustain an abundance of space for play for all children in every
community. More information can be found at www.kaboom.org.
“Having the playground
available on-site this
year for Day Camp has
really added to our
program – we used to
walk the campers about
10 blocks to the closest
one,” said Day Camp
Director Jennifer Norris.
When asked how they
liked it, the day campers
responded in unison,
“IT’S AWESOME!”
transform the lives of all who come to The Salvation Army.
The collaboration and evolution of the Charles E. Lakin Human Service Campus
has been challenging, joyful and rewarding. The success of this project has been
determined through trust, open communication between agencies and donors and
the respect of everyone involved in the collaboration. By using the resources offered
by each agency, it is hoped that the Lakin Campus will build a legacy of hope in the
Council Bluffs community.
Local Advisory Board Member Leads North Omaha Corps
Community Center Revitalization Plan
Visitors who stop by The Salvation Army
North Corps Community Center today will
likely notice something different. Thanks to
the leadership of Salvation Army advisory
board member Mike Weekly, the center is
now armed with a revitalized vision and an
energized staff ready to carry out a powerful
new mission.
The change began nine months ago when
Weekly, an executive vice president at Mutual
of Omaha, worked with Christine Johnson,
president of the Mutual of Omaha Foundation,
to assemble a team of key individuals
– including North Corps leadership and
staff – to prioritize what the north Omaha
community needed and how The Salvation
Army could help meet those needs. Together,
the team developed a strategic action plan that
includes the creation of a mission statement,
the identification of staffing and facility needs
and the development of new programming
through community partnerships.
As a result of the group’s planning, the North
Corps is now guided by a mission aimed
at “equipping people with skills for today,
Omaha North Corps Community Center offers two
feeding programs. The after-school Kids Café
program for children and Kare Kitchen, an adult
lunch time feeding program.
empowerment for tomorrow and hope for
eternity.” The new mission is already being
reflected through several new community
partnerships that have been formed with
organizations like the Omaha Symphony,
the Omaha Community Playhouse, the
Nebraska Arts Council and several local
schools. Through these partnerships, kids in
north Omaha are being exposed to safe, fun,
character-building experiences at the North
Corps Community Center.
“We’re so grateful for everything that Mike
Weekly and his team are doing to help take the
North Corps to a new level,” said Jane Rogers,
chairman of The Salvation Army Omaha
Advisory Board. “The entire team has been
steadfast in their encouragement and in their
faith that north Omaha needs the work of
The Salvation Army.”
DOING THE MOST
GOOD WITH A
RIPPLE EFFECT
By Alex Velasquez, Norfolk, NE
Corps Community Center Officer
When people who are in need experience the love and compassion
of The Salvation Army as they get help, it inspires them to help
others. Since the early years of The Salvation Army people have
been helped with their basic needs and their lives have been
forever changed as a result. Many of those people have worked
hard to become volunteers, employees, and officers so they can
help others do the same. I call this process Doing The Most Good
with a ripple effect.
During those early years of The Salvation Army, there was a man
called “Ash Barrel Jimmy.” He was an alcoholic who was found in
a barrel, passed out and near death, his hair frozen to the bottom.
A police officer found him and placed him under arrest. When he
was taken before the judge, he was sentenced to seek help at the
local Salvation Army. During one of their spiritual services “Ash
Barrel Jimmy” fell to his knees, asked the Lord to save him, and he
then dedicated the rest of his life to help others escape the disease
of alcoholism.
I am also one who has experienced the help with love and
compassion from the people at The Salvation Army. I became
a drug addict at the age of thirteen, and a street gang leader in
Chicago by the time I was fourteen. I lived that miserable drugaddicted
and violent life style for twenty-seven years and ended
homeless towards the end. Then, one day someone took me to The
Salvation Army where I came to know the Lord and my life has
been changing for the good ever since. I am now a Salvation Army
Officer with a burning desire in my heart to help others escape
their suffering.
A countless number of people seek help at Salvation Army
locations in more than a hundred countries. They come to
us because they know we will help them with godly love and
compassion. I believe we are most effective because many of us
have experienced what those people are going through. At The
Salvation Army, we not only help people with their basic needs,
we create a ripple effect as we lead them to Jesus Christ who
empowers them to help others.
Captain Alex Velasquez, Salvation Army Corps Officer, Norfolk,
Nebraska, gave his personal testimony at the Omaha Salvation Army’s
Doing The Most Good Luncheon on September 24th.
A DIVISION
UNDER WATER
Since the beginning of May, South Dakota and parts of Western Iowa
experienced widespread devastation because of severe flooding and
more than 21 tornadoes.
One of the communities hit hardest was Aberdeen, South Dakota,
where nearly eight inches of torrential rain fell in May. On May 7th,
Governor Mike Rounds declared a state of emergency. Subsequently
a federal disaster emergency designation was issued through a
Presidential Declaration on May 22.
The Salvation Army, Lutheran Social Services, United Methodist and
the local American Red Cross combined efforts to provide assistance
to those suffering such a great loss. The Aberdeen Salvation Army
worked tirelessly, daily serving more than 600 meals each day.
In addition, Salvation Army personnel distributed cleaning supplies
and vouchers for clothing, food and rent and offered emotional and
spiritual care. As of July, the Army had provided over $20,000 worth
of assistance and will continue to provide support for as long as the
need remains.
While flood waters spread across the northern part of the state,
tornadoes ripped through central South Dakota. In response, The
Salvation Army Corps in Mitchell, under the leadership of Major Linda
Jones, assisted tornado survivors in their area. They provided food
and drink to those helping with the cleanup and reconstruction of the
communities most severely damaged.
As a result of the same storm system, mid-western Iowa was also
flooded. Communities including Missouri Valley, Red Oak, Atlantic,
Shenandoah, and Hamburg were in desperate need of assistance. The
Salvation Army Council Bluffs Corps and the Omaha Emergency
Disaster Team combined efforts to meet those local needs.
The worst damage was in Missouri Valley, where there was five feet
of standing water and approximately 80 homes destroyed by the
flood waters. The main
highway through town
was closed in both
directions (north and
south) for two days.
The Salvation Army
provided cleanup
materials, boxes of
canned food and
drinks for distribution,
and mobile feeding of
residents and cleanup
crews. As long as there
remains a need, The
Salvation Army will be
there to compassionately
respond with practical
assistance and spiritual
care.
Aberdeen Salvation Army responded immediately when severe spring
storms causes major flooding. The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster
Services provided services to residents and emergency responders.
Speaker Shares Story of the
Triumph of the Human Spirit
A thin, pale woman dressed casually in blue jeans
stopped a Salvation Army volunteer after the “D.J.’s
Hero Awards Luncheon” in Omaha on May 7 to
say “thanks.”
She had heard on a radio station that morning that
Nando Parrado was speaking at the annual lunch.
The woman had once flown over the spot in the
Andes where Parrado’s plane crashed, leaving him
and other members of his Uruguayan rugby team
stranded for 72 days.
Since then, she had survived a brain tumor, her
husband’s illness and the loss of everything they
owned. Then her son died.
She was looking for a story of hope and survival
--- and found it in Parrado’s speech. The grateful
woman quietly left, overwhelmed and encouraged.
She was one of 1,200 people, including Nebraska’s
governor and Omaha’s mayor, gathered at the
Qwest Center ballroom that day. They were there
for the annual D.J.’s Hero Awards Luncheon that
raised more than $356,000 for programs for
children in The Salvation Army’s Western Division.
Parrado received a standing ovation after telling his
story of survival after the plane carrying him and
45 passengers crashed 11,000 feet in the Andes,
breaking in half. He emerged a hero when he and a
teammate walked for 10 days to find help.
His story was told in the book “Alive” and in a
movie that starred actor Ethan Hawke as Parrado,
who served as technical advisor. Parrado signed
copies of his new book, “Miracle in the Andes,”
after the luncheon and donated part of the
proceeds to The Salvation Army.
Also receiving an enthusiastic standing ovation
were the six D.J.’s Hero award winners. Each
received a $5,000 scholarship.
The event --- one of the largest annual civic
luncheons in Omaha --- is named for D.J. Sokol,
son of David and Peggy Sokol of Omaha. The
winners were about the same age as D.J. when he
died of cancer at the age of 18.
The teenagers honored at the luncheon each
had a moving story of courage, concern for the
community and compassion for others.
The mission of award winner Zane Fried of
Omaha, who is in remission from non-Hodgkin’s
Lymphoma, is to help others deal with cancer. He
has written a book for other teen cancer survivors.
Nia Karmann of Grand Island is a mentor and role
model for other Spina Bifida families. She lives her
faith and helps others see the strength of God.
Micheal Kimberly of Holdrege helps care for his
disabled father and also helps support his family.
Yet he finds time to volunteer in the community.
Chelsea LeGrow of Omaha has given care and
love to 50 foster children her parents have taken
in. She is a church youth leader and volunteers to
assist mothers and children in need.
Katherine Schueths of Lincoln is an active and
enthusiastic volunteer who shares her experience
of surviving a stroke at age 11 and living with
disabilities. She visits Madonna Rehabilitation
Hospital patients with Casey, the therapy dog she
trained.
Family tragedies have led Sara Watson of
Alliance to show courage and responsibility.
She has become a leader with her peers and in
the community, heading up many fund-raising
activities. Each year, the D.J.’s Hero Awards honors
an adult who has made a difference in the lives of
children. This year’s honoree was Louie Warren,
CEO and president, Greater Omaha YMCA.
Like Parrado, the D.J.’s Hero award winners
illustrate the triumph of the human spirit. All are
heroes in overcoming hardships with a positive
and giving spirit.
The luncheon raised funds for these Salvation
Army programs: Children’s Summer Enrichment,
Back to School, Children of WELLSPRING, and
the North Omaha After School program.
(See photograph on page 8.)
OMAHA SALVATION ARMY BREAKS GROUND continued from page 1
to The Salvation Army. Mrs. Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc,
bequeathed her estate to The Salvation Army for the exclusive purpose of
constructing and operating world-class community centers.
The Omaha location was the first Kroc Center to break ground in the
Army’s Central Territory. “Throughout this process we have been seeking
God’s guidance and praying for opportunities to advance the mission of
The Salvation Army through Mrs. Kroc’s generous gift,” said Commissioner
Ken Baillie, who oversees The Salvation Army’s work in the Midwest. “We
celebrate as the Omaha RJKCCC is the first in the Midwest to take this
exciting next step.”
Half of the $60 million gift to Omaha will be used for construction and
the other half to partially establish an endowment to support the future
operations of the Center. The Omaha Salvation Army must raise at least
50 percent of Mrs. Kroc’s gift to the endowment, or $15 million, which will
encourage the community participation envisioned by Mrs. Kroc.
The Salvation Army is partnering with Heritage Services, a local non-profit
organization, for its fundraising and construction management expertise to
oversee the completion of the Kroc Center initiative.
A variety of programs and services for children and adults will be offered.
Individuals, seniors and families will have access to educational, recreational
and arts programs. Kroc Center highlights include an aquatics center,
gymnasium, educational classrooms, a flexible assembly hall for worship and
performing arts, and soccer fields. A large outdoor green “festival plaza” will
accommodate neighborhood events.
While the Kroc Center will be ideally located to meet the needs of
underserved residents, the programs and services that will be provided
are being designed to serve as a magnet that will attract the entire Omaha
community, be financially self-sustaining and further the mission of The
Salvation Army.
"Through this facility, The Salvation Army will provide opportunities for
thousands to have a safe, secure environment where they can participate
in educational, recreational, arts and worship activities and be inspired to
make a difference in their world. We are excited about the lives which will
be transformed through this new ministry," states Major Merle Heatwole,
Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Western Division.
In accordance with Mrs. Kroc’s wishes, none of the Kroc Center funds can be
used for ongoing services and programs that The Salvation Army provides,
on a daily basis, to the Omaha community such as food, clothing and
shelter. Funding for those programs is raised through the annual Christmas
campaign and support from donors throughout the year.
