GHSA Office Doing More Things Electronically
When I measure my age in calendar years, I feel old. When I consider
the number and quality of the innovations that I have seen during those
years, I feel really old. In small steps, the Georgia High School Association
is trying to move into the world of communication that exists in
the 21 st century.
The GHSA web site (www.ghsa.net) has been greatly enhanced in
the past few weeks. The addition of the Constitution and By-laws to
the web site represents a major change in GHSA procedures. It was
apparent that many coaches never saw one of the “White Books” that
was sent out to each school. Now everyone on the staff can have
access to that information. Please note that the format has changed a
little bit. Information that does not fit into the Constitution, the By-laws,
or a sport procedure has now been placed in a series of appendices.
It is the responsibility of administrators and coaches of member
schools to know the GHSA rules that affect their students and their competitive programs.
The web site format has been revamped in an attempt to make navigation easier. Much more attention
has been given to calendar notations that can be accessed in several different ways. We encourage
people to look at the web site first, and then call the office if questions persist. Please note the new
“online store” and the links to our fine corporate partners.
There are other changes in the communication process between the GHSA office and member schools.
Obviously the GHSA newsletter has been sent electronically rather than through the mail. The use of
bulk emails has been used with some degree of success. There is a major area of attention needed
here, however. Contact persons at each school and their email addresses change more rapidly than the
physical address of the school. Please enable the GHSA to communicate with you more effectively by
letting us know when you change the contact person, or when that person changes his/her email address.
This needs to be an ongoing process throughout the school year. The GHSA is investigating
some additional communication systems that will allow for quicker communication in times of emergency.
Be watching for more information about this.
For the time being, the GHSA will not be handling eligibility filings electronically. This may happen in the
future, but the privacy issues and the need for additional documentation have been a challenge. Other
items will also be sent out on paper, but the number and the size of “all-school mailings” will be decreasing.
If these technological changes create difficulties at your schools, please let us know.
Georgia’s EMCs Promote
High School Sportsmanship
In their continued commitment to youth and high school
athletics, Georgia’s Electric Membership Cooperatives are
kicking off a new program aimed at promoting sportsmanship
at competitive events.
The major thrust of the campaign will be to honor high
schools that exemplify superior sportsmanship, according to
Marty Myers of Georgia EMC.
The Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award will be presented
annually to Georgia High School Association member
high schools singled out for good sportsmanship.
Approached by the GHSA to take part in its
ramped-up focus on
sportsmanship at regular
season and playoff
events, Georgia’s EMCs
agreed to partner with
GHSA by sponsoring the
awards program de-
signed to emphasize
sportsmanship.
“Good sportsman-
ship is an essential aspect
of school-based
athletics,” says Ralph
Swearingen, Ex-
ecutive Director of
the GHSA. “It is
good citizenship
demonstrated dur-
ing competition.”
Noting that the
attributes of good
sportsmanship
fall in line with the
principles by
which cooperatives
operate
and live, Myers
says it was an
easy decision
for Georgia’s
EMCs, which
have supported GHSA championship events for seven years,
to join in promoting good sportsmanship.
“Cooperative principles stress important values, such as
cooperation and teamwork, just as relevant on the high school
playing field as they are to co-op employees in the workplace,”
said Myers. “We’re excited for this opportunity to increase the
value of our sponsorship of Georgia high school athletics.”
Up to 40 awards will be presented each year, one for each
of the eight regions within the GHSA’s five classifications.
Selected by each GHSA region, the awards honor not only
sportsmanship demonstrated by athletes but by fellow students,
parents, coaches and spectators also, making the award
a tribute to the entire school community.
The first Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards cover
the 2005-06 school year and will be presented to the winning
schools during halftime at fall football games.
Winners of the first Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards
across Georgia are:
County; Region 3: Bryan County; Region 4: Treutlen; Region 8:
Establish a Policy on Practices in Hot Weather:
(A) Beginning March 1, 2007, each member school shall have a written policy for conducting practices (all sports)
(2) the ratio of workout time to time allotted for rest and hydration at various heat index levels
(B) Additionally, a scientifically-approved instrument that measures the heat index must be utilized at each practice
to insure the written policy is being followed properly.
The GHSA is to make the request that the State Board of Education consider adopting this proposal as a state rule.
