Preparing for <strong>the</strong> 199 7-98 School Year<br />

Enrollment Center Open<br />

The <strong>Union</strong> <strong>Public</strong> School District will<br />

h ave a centralized enrollment center<br />

this year to provide easier access for<br />

parents enrolling <strong>the</strong>ir children. The<br />

Enrollment Center is currently located<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Education Service Center Building<br />

"B" (second building, rear entrance) at<br />

5656 S. 129th E. Ave. In mid-August,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Enrollment Center will move to its<br />

permanent home in <strong>the</strong> new building<br />

under construction just to <strong>the</strong> north of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Education Service Center.<br />

Hours of operation will be as follows:<br />

July 1-August 14 - Monday, Tuesday,<br />

Wednesday, & Friday- 8-11:30 A.M. and<br />

1-4:00 P.M.; Thursday - 1-4:00 and 5-<br />

7:30 P.M. (Closed until 1:00 P.M. on<br />

August 12, 1997) If you have specific<br />

questions about <strong>the</strong> enrollment process,<br />

please feel free to call <strong>the</strong> enrollment<br />

center at 459-4686, FAX 459-3688<br />

How to Prepare for Enrollment<br />

The following are general guidelines for<br />

enrollment:<br />

l. The student must be a resident of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Union</strong> <strong>Public</strong> School District, living<br />

with a parent or legal guardian. Proof of<br />

residence will be required. Current,<br />

original electric, gas, or water bill<br />

reflecting <strong>the</strong> service address OR<br />

current, original lease agreement/house<br />

contract reflecting property address,<br />

agent name, address, and phone<br />

number will be considered appropriate<br />

documentation. The district will not<br />

accept driver's licenses, checks, or<br />

pieces of mail as proof of residence.<br />

2. For kindergarten and first grade, a<br />

birth certificate verifying age must be<br />

presented. Kindergarten students must<br />

be five year s of age on or before<br />

September 1, 1997. First grade students<br />

must be six years of age on or before<br />

September 1, 199 7. Birth certificates<br />

are requested for all o<strong>the</strong>r students,<br />

although <strong>the</strong>y are not mandatory.<br />

3. Immunization records must be<br />

presented for s tudents to enroll.<br />

Immunization requirements are as<br />

follows:<br />

Kindergarten & 1st (not having had K)<br />

5 OPT*, 4 OP''*, & 2 MMR<br />

2nd through 7th Grades<br />

3 OPT, 3 OP, & 2 MMR<br />

8th through 12th Grades<br />

* Unless <strong>the</strong> fourth dose was received<br />

on or after <strong>the</strong> fourth birthday.<br />

"* Unless <strong>the</strong> third dose was received<br />

on or after <strong>the</strong> fourth birthday.<br />

Beginning in <strong>the</strong> 1997-98 school year, all<br />

children entering <strong>the</strong> seventh grade will<br />

be required to have three hepatitis B<br />

vaccinations.<br />

Beginning in <strong>the</strong> 1998-99 school year, aU<br />

children entering kindergarten will be<br />

required to have three hepatitis B<br />

vaccinations. If you have questions,<br />

please contact your physician or <strong>the</strong><br />

Tulsa City-County Health Department.<br />

Exemption forms are avai.lable for those<br />

who have medical, personal, or religious<br />

reasons for exemption.<br />

4. School records will be obtained from<br />

previous school, so please bring that<br />

school's address.<br />

Councils has selected <strong>Union</strong> High School<br />

Assistant Principal Denise Vaniadis as<br />

<strong>the</strong> recipient of its highest national<br />

Denise Vaniadis<br />

honor, <strong>the</strong> Warren E. Shull Award for<br />

outstanding student council sponsors.<br />

The announcement, made during <strong>the</strong><br />

'11st Annual NASC Conference held at<br />

Paradise VaJJey High School in Phoenix,<br />

Arizona, june 25-29, represents <strong>the</strong><br />

culmination of a highly competitive<br />

process which began at <strong>the</strong> s tate and<br />

regional levels.<br />

The Warren E. Shull Award is named<br />

after <strong>the</strong> man who founded <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Association of Student Councils 61<br />

years ago when he was a high school<br />

student in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Mrs.<br />

Vaniadis is <strong>the</strong> first Oklahoman to<br />

receive <strong>the</strong> award since its inception in<br />

1988, a year after ShuJJ's death.<br />

impressive fellow Oklahoman and to<br />

represent a state that takes such pride<br />

Character To Count In<br />

<strong>Union</strong> is reaching into <strong>the</strong> community to<br />

expand its successful "Character<br />

Counts" program. During a two-day<br />

training session this s ummer,<br />

representatives of various businesses<br />

and community organizations planned<br />

ways to model and publicize <strong>the</strong><br />

program's six pillars of character.<br />

outdoors in "Project Wet and<br />

Wild!''<br />

Students learned about trees<br />

and poison ivy; <strong>the</strong>y<br />

experimented witlr <strong>the</strong><br />

adhesive and cohesive<br />

properties of water; <strong>the</strong>y took<br />

water samples from a pond<br />

and wrote in <strong>the</strong>ir journals.<br />

They we re taught <strong>the</strong> good<br />

qualities of snakes and made<br />

fake snake skin.<br />

Parents helped students cook<br />

lrot dogs and s'mores over a<br />

campfire for lunch. The<br />

afternoon was filled with<br />

l1abitat gam es, painting,<br />

bubbles, water balloons, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r recreational games.<br />

What an exciting way to end <strong>the</strong> year!<br />

The whole school is buzzing about <strong>the</strong><br />

new Niche o r Nature (outdoor<br />

classroom). Merchants have contributed<br />

important items and students and staff<br />

have contributed ma ny meaningful<br />

hours.<br />

All of this has come toge<strong>the</strong>r to provide<br />

students a real live outdoor<br />

environment. Andersen s tudents and<br />

teachers are p roud of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

accomplishment and feel certain<br />

parents and patrons will be pleasan tly<br />

surprised.<br />

This project was made possible by a<br />

Teacher of <strong>the</strong> Year grant and through<br />

donations from <strong>the</strong> following merchants<br />

Denise Smallwood, professional artist<br />

and mom, t ransferred <strong>the</strong> stud ents'<br />

work onto <strong>the</strong> large mural. They <strong>the</strong>n<br />

painted <strong>the</strong>ir pictures and a dded a<br />

border or handprints. The mural will<br />

serve as a beautiful reminder of <strong>the</strong><br />

Character Counts program and a tribute<br />

to <strong>the</strong> abilities of <strong>the</strong> students that were<br />

honored.<br />

Andersen fiftll graders l1elped dig <strong>the</strong> pond area for <strong>the</strong>ir outdoor classroom last spring. The<br />

"Niche of Nature" will be used for outdoor classroom studies beginning this fall when <strong>the</strong> students<br />

return (rom <strong>the</strong>ir summer vacations.

unique performance ensemble. After<br />

level, <strong>the</strong>y finished seventh in <strong>the</strong> nation<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Sport of <strong>the</strong> Art International<br />

contest. Seventeen senior members of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Renegade Regiment concluded <strong>the</strong><br />

1996-97 school year with scholarship<br />

most of which were directly related to<br />

Awards. Seniors Kirsten Kuhlmann,<br />

Russell McCrackin, Ryan Moore, and<br />

Kelly Wells who made <strong>the</strong> Oklahoma<br />

Music Educators' Association (OMEA)<br />

All-State Choir. Earning Division I,<br />

Superior ra ting at State Solo and<br />

Ensemble Contest were seniors Kirsten<br />

Kulhmann, Kathleen Merchant, Mimi<br />

Teague, and Kelly Wells.<br />

The <strong>Union</strong> Highsteppers won first place<br />

in state drill team competition, winning<br />

a wid e vari ety of solo and ensemble<br />

trophies as well as <strong>the</strong> Sweepstakes<br />

Award, judges Trophy Award,<br />

Choreography Award, Technique Award<br />

and Tops in Oklahoma Award. Regional<br />

competitions produced a long list of<br />

awards and recognition fo r soloists,<br />

Some new faces joined <strong>the</strong> Highsteppers<br />

this season as a gr oup of young men<br />

formed an auxilia ry known as <strong>the</strong><br />

"Guysteppers." They provided dance<br />

partners, a supportive cheering section<br />

and road crew for <strong>the</strong> Highsteppers.<br />

Fresh from <strong>the</strong>ir victory at nationals, a<br />

number of Highsteppers a nd<br />

Guysteppers garnered starring roles in<br />

<strong>the</strong> large singin g an d dancing cast<br />

featu red in <strong>the</strong> all-school musical,<br />

"Seven Brides for Seven Bro<strong>the</strong>rs." The<br />

four-day r u n was enthusiastically<br />

received by record crowds.<br />

Senior members have received a total of<br />

eight scholarship awards and will<br />

continue <strong>the</strong>ir education as part of<br />

univer sity orchestra programs. Liza<br />

Landers, who was a member of <strong>the</strong><br />

Tulsa Youth Symphony, <strong>the</strong> 1997 All­<br />

State Orchestra, and received superior<br />

ratings at State Solo Contest, was<br />

awarded a music scholarship from The<br />

University of Tulsa. Liza was also <strong>the</strong><br />

Franco Autori scholarship award winner<br />

earlier in <strong>the</strong> school year. Sylvia Alajaji,<br />

Tommy Montgomery, Lisa Friedl, and<br />

Kelly Wells all received music<br />

scholarships to <strong>the</strong> University of Tulsa.<br />

Christy Potts will be attending Baylor<br />

University on a music scholarship, and<br />

Mendy Swan receive d a music<br />

scholarship t o Nor<strong>the</strong>astern State<br />

University.<br />

Senior members o f <strong>the</strong> competitive<br />

Speech/ Debate team received numerous<br />

awards d uring th e year. Among <strong>the</strong><br />

awards winners are Matt Wetmore and<br />

Chris Jones who received a third place<br />

award at state con test. Matt and Chris<br />

wer e fo ur-year state qualifiers and<br />

qualified fo r National Competition for<br />

<strong>the</strong> second year in a r ow. Tarah<br />

Brennan qualified for state competition<br />

and was selected as <strong>the</strong> high point<br />

senior. Sean Wolfe and Ben Azela were<br />

honored as regional qualifiers in debate.<br />

Shorty Blackburn was a two-year<br />

regional qualifier. Hea<strong>the</strong>r Michealson<br />

was honored as a regional qualifier.

Look! Up in <strong>the</strong> sky! It's a bird! It's a<br />

plane! No, it's ELVIS!?! We never knew<br />

what might drop out of <strong>the</strong> sky into<br />

<strong>Union</strong>-Tuttle Stadium during this past<br />

football season, but it was always<br />

exciting. The real fireworks , however,<br />

were created by our athletes <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

named Most Inspirational Player for<br />

1996-97. Ashley Buck, one of <strong>the</strong> team<br />

captains, has earned a scholarship for<br />

soccer from St. Mary's. She was in <strong>the</strong><br />

starting lineup for four years, received<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1996 Coach's Award, has ten<br />

shutouts to her credit, and was named<br />

All-District, All -Co nference, and All­<br />

State. Julie Harris, also a starter for<br />

four years, shared captain honors with<br />

Ashley. She led <strong>the</strong> Lady Redskins<br />

defense to 13 shutouts, scored sLx goals,<br />

was Best Defensive Player for 1996-97,<br />

Team MVP in 1997, All-District, All­<br />

Conference, and All-State. Julie will play<br />

soccer on scholarship at OSU next year.<br />

The 1996-97 boys soccer squad finished<br />

<strong>the</strong> season as district champions and<br />

four varsity letters. She set a school<br />

record by shooting 70 on 18 holes and<br />

145 on 36 holes, and has a season<br />

average of 76.6. Bonnie was a top-five<br />

finisher in 15 tournaments. Her<br />

achievements have earned her a full-ride<br />

scholarship at Tulane University.<br />

Christy Potts, a four-year starter, was<br />

All-Conference for two years, went to<br />

<strong>the</strong> state tournament for three years,<br />

and received honorable<br />

was a two-time letterman and Peter<br />

Mazza graduated with four varsity<br />

letters.<br />

jose Boria closed <strong>the</strong> chapter of his<br />

high school cross country career as cocaptain<br />

of <strong>the</strong> team and took with him<br />

two varsity letters. Letterman Amber<br />

Duke was a State high jumper for two<br />

years. Hea<strong>the</strong>r Michaelson ran cross<br />

country for <strong>the</strong> Redskins for four years<br />

and lettered for two. Captain Megan<br />

Riddle has honors as All-Conference,<br />

All-Region, and All-State, and was<br />

regional champ her senior year. We're<br />

sorry to see you go, but glad for <strong>the</strong><br />

time you were here.<br />

The 1997 graduates from track and field<br />

will be hard to replace not only for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

talent, but also for <strong>the</strong>ir character. It will<br />

be hard to find a class with more class<br />

than this group. Megan Riddle, State<br />

Champion in <strong>the</strong> 1600 and 3200M, will<br />

continue her running at OU. Natalie<br />

Graves, a 100 and 300M hurdler, placed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> 1996 State meet and will attend<br />

relays for four years, and helped <strong>the</strong><br />

400M relay team place twice at State.<br />

William Milligan, a distance runner, will<br />

go to OSU. Jeff English and Chris<br />

Schul<strong>the</strong>is were both part of <strong>the</strong> 400M<br />

relay team that placed second at State<br />

this year. Scott Martin, a sprinter on<br />

both <strong>the</strong> track and <strong>the</strong> football field is<br />

headed for NEO. John Winters ran 100<br />

and 300M hurdles and qualified for<br />

State. Tim Walker, a distance runner,<br />

will attend Loyola of New Orleans.<br />

Jaafar led <strong>the</strong> team in saves and<br />

appearances dw·ing <strong>the</strong> season and was<br />

named AJI-Conference second team and<br />

All-Metro. Mike Hobbs was a team<br />

leader on and off <strong>the</strong> diamond. A twoyear<br />

starter, Mike was All-Conference<br />

second team and All-Metro, and he<br />

played in <strong>the</strong> Tulsa Metro All Star game,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sunbelt Classic and <strong>the</strong> Sooner State<br />

Games. Mike tied <strong>the</strong> single-season<br />

stolen base record at 34 and was a team<br />

leader in assists, runs scored and<br />

double plays. Although Elliot Nelson<br />

missed most of <strong>the</strong> season due to an<br />

injury, he remained one of <strong>the</strong> most<br />

respected players on <strong>the</strong> team. His<br />

outstanding work ethic and leadership<br />

were an inspiration to teammates.<br />

was third in<br />

to improve <strong>the</strong> team's success. Daniel<br />

Nicolotti was a part-time starter during<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1997 season, contributing at a<br />

variety of positions. He displayed a<br />

great attitude, always putting <strong>the</strong> team's<br />

success first. First baseman Lantz Day,<br />

was a part-time s tarter who hit with<br />

power to all fields. Travis Griffin was a<br />

great team player who did whatever was<br />

need ed during practice or a game.<br />

Travis was one of <strong>the</strong> most-liked<br />

players, always putting his goals second<br />

to <strong>the</strong> teams.<br />

for excellence upon which we can<br />
