ask if he could have a time extension. I can remember so well his standing at the
telephone--one attached to the wall in the dining room of the Red House--and his
militarily correct "Thank you, Sir" response when his request was denied! I was
furious! The wedding took place before his return, nevertheless, but was hald about
midnight, I believe. I recall Sister Sal saying that the minister arrived at that hour of
the night as neatly turned out as though it had been midday, which made the party
feel somehow much better. Those were very trying days of absent grooms and
often-weeping brides. We all felt it sorely, even we children.
