Dear Friends
A very warm welcome to Opera Gems, greatest hits from some of opera’s finest
moments. Love and loss, passion, rivalry, redemption – enjoy the drama of
opera without the plots in a nostalgic mix of hauntingly beautiful and familiar
overtures and choruses.
We are delighted to be joined by Glasgow Symphony Orchestra for this
evening’s performance, which is part of the West End Festival, under the baton
of their conductor Dr. Tommy Fowler. The concert recognises the bicentenaries
of Wagner's and Verdi's births, and accordingly will open with Wagner’s
Overture to Die Meistersinger. Verdi is represented by several of his best-known
choruses. After the interval the orchestra opens with the final movement of the
Symphony in D Minor by César Franck, his only symphony and the only work
tonight which is not from an opera.
Once again we are most grateful for the dedication of our musical director
Christopher Barr and accompanist Razvan ˘ Luculescu who have prepared us for
tonight’s concert with their usual patience and good humour. Both are singing
with us tonight and Razvan ˘ will accompany the choir on piano for Cachucha
from The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan.
Do have a look at our website www.strathavenchoral.com for information
about forthcoming concerts and events.
We thank the businesses who have sponsored tonight’s concert programme.
Please give them your support.
Enjoy your evening – I hope we have included your favourite.
communities and individuals flourish through music making, and promotes
excellence in voluntary music making by supporting a diverse range of music
groups in their excellent work:
build communities and support other charitable organisations
• they provide participation and learning opportunities and promote mental well-being for
over 200,000 people in the UK
• they encourage children, young people and older people to get involved in music
making
• they contribute to our cultural economy by promoting over 11,000 concerts a year to
audiences of more than 1.6 million people
• in many communities a concert by a Making Music member organisation is the only form of
live music making.
Making Music members have been playing and performing in rural and urban communities for
hundreds of years. They are rooted within their communities and serve those who want to
participate in and appreciate live music.
Compared to some Wagner opera preludes which set the scene for
the action and move right into it, the music which begins this opera is
an overture of the old-fashioned style. A number of different tunes
from the opera are organised into a formal scheme with an assertive
conclusion. The opening is taken from the processional music of the
mastersingers’ guild. The opera tells the story of how Walther gets the
girl after winning the song competition; especially after his rival,
Beckmesser, is exposed as a cheat.
When the first tune is over the music
moves to more fleeting themes among
them a motive derived from the
crowd’s mockery of Beckmesser which
is recognisable if you fit the words of
the English translation to it - “Surely
she’ll refuse him”. A return to C major
and a single triangle stroke heralds an
imposing contrapuntal web when
several of the themes are wound
together.
It is probably the best known part of the opera. The setting is a gypsy camp in the
mountains of Biscay, where the men beat out the rhythm of the chorus on their anvils.
Vedi! le fosche notturne spoglie
de' cieli sveste l'immensa vôlta:
sembra una vedova che alfin si toglie
i bruni panni ond'era involta.
All'opra, all'opra! Dagli. Martella.
Chi del gitano i giorni abbella?
Chi del gitano i giorni abbella,
chi? chi i giorni abbella?
Chi del gitano i giorni abbella?
La zingarella!
Versami un tratto; lena e coraggio
il corpo e l'anima traggon dal bere.
Oh guarda, guarda del sole un raggio
brilla più vivido nel tuo bicchiere!
All'opra, all'opra..
Chi del gitano i giorni abbella?
Chi del gitano i giorni abbella,
chi? chi i giorni abbella?
La zingarella, la zingarella, la zingarella!
See how the clouds melt away from the
face of the sky when the sun shines, its
brightness beaming; just as a widow,
discarding her black robes, shows all her
beauty in brilliance gleaming.
To work! Lift up your hammers!
Who turns the Gypsy's day from gloom to
brightest sunshine?
Who turns ...
Who? Who from gloom to brightest
sunshine?
His lovely Gypsy maid!
Fill up the goblets! New strength and
courage flow from lusty wine to soul and
body.
See how the rays of the sun play and
sparkle and give to our wine gay new
splendour.
So, to work now!
Who turns the Gypsy's day from gloom to
brightest sunshine?
Who? Who from gloom to brightest
sunshine?
His lovely Gypsy maid!
The “Humming Chorus” ends the second act of
Puccini’s opera; it serves as a lullaby for Suzuki,
the servant of the geisha Cio-Cio-San (“Butterfly”),
and for Butterfly’s toddler, as the three wait
through the night for the return of the American
Lieutenant Pinkerton.
At the beginning of Act 4, the refugees stand near the border, with Birnam Wood in the
distance. Macduff, determined to avenge the deaths of his wife and children, is joined
by Malcolm, son of king Duncan, and the English army, as they prepare to liberate
Scotland from the tyrant Macbeth.
Patria oppressa! il dolce nome
No, di madre aver non puoi,
Or che tutta a figli tuoi
Sei conversa in un avel.
D'orfanelli e di piangenti
Chi lo sposo e chi la prole
Al venir del nuovo Sole
S'alza un grido e fere il Ciel.
A quel grido il Ciel risponde
Quasi voglia impietosito
Propagar per l'infinito,
Patria oppressa, il tuo dolor.
Suona a morto ognor la squilla,
Ma nessuno audace è tanto
Che pur doni un vano pianto
A chi soffre ed a chi muor.
Oppressed land of ours! You cannot have
the sweet name of mother,
Now that you have become a tomb for
your sons.
From orphans, from those who mourn,
Some for husbands, some for children,
At each new dawn a cry goes up
to outrage heaven.
To that cry heaven replies
as if moved to pity,
Oppressed land, it would
proclaim your grief forever.
The bell tolls constantly for death
But no-one is so bold
As to shed a vain tear
For the suffering and dying.
INTERVAL
The themes of Franck's only symphony present
strong outlines, vivid orchestral colour and
exultant climaxes. It has a highly individual
construction one of the features being that the
finale quotes from the other movements. The
finale has a sweeping onward drive with a marchlike,
syncopated main theme. Later the cor anglais theme from the second movement
re-appears and there is also a recapitulation of the "motive of faith" and the opening
theme from the first movement. Nevertheless it is the march-like theme from the
movement's opening which returns in triumph at the end.
Tannhäuser has sinned, having dallied with the Venus in Venusberg, and goes with a
group of Pilgrims to Rome to beg pardon from the Pope. His love, Elisabeth, awaits his
return with his friend Wolfram. This chorus is sung as the Pilgrims return from Rome,
and opens in a beautifully atmospheric , gradually reaching its climactic ,
before dying away into the distance.
Prince Igor, which was incomplete on Borodin‘s death and was
completed by Rimsky Korsakov and Glazunov, is rarely
performed outside Russia. The action of the opera relates to an
incident in 1185 during a conflict between Russia and the Tartars.
Prince Igor is defeated and captured by Khan Konchak of the
Polovtsi but eventually manages to escape.
The Polovtsian dances were completed by Borodin before his
death. They are much better known than the opera itself and are
frequently performed in the choral version we sing tonight. In the
opera the dances are performed by the slave dancers of the Khan
to entertain the captive Prince Igor.
Fly away on gentle breezes; fly swiftly, songs of love, to greet our homeland where
once we lived in hope and knew no sorrow, where once we sang, rejoicing in our
freedom.
There beneath the burning sky languid breezes cooled us, there the cloud-capped
mountains dream above the silver sea;
There our days were long and carefree amid the sunlit hills and shady meadows, and
there the scent of roses in the valleys once filled the sultry air with sweetest perfume,
and fertile vineyards yield sweet wine.
There skylarks sing. Fly away, our songs of freedom.
Glory, honour, praises to our Khan! Fearless, mighty, ruthless warrior, hail!
Sing his praise, great Konchak, praise him! Fiercer than the scorching midday sun!
None can equal him in splendour, none! Slaves and captives all acclaim him -
"Look at those slaves of mine, aren't they beautiful? Captives I took from the tribes of
the Caspian. They can make you forget all your loneliness, choose any one who
attracts you, and she shall be yours."
Glory, honour, praises to our Khan! Braver far than all before you!
Great Khan Konchak! Praise our Khan, Khan Konchak!
Fly away on gentle breezes ...
Braver far than all before you ... Praise our Khan, Khan Konchak!
Dance and sing for Konchak's pleasure,
Let all people praise him singing! Let all people praise him dancing!
Glasgow Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1975 by Dorothy Gunnee and
Tom Kent. The orchestra has only ever had two conductors, Tom Kent and
Tommy Fowler who took over when Tom retired. The orchestra prides itself in
being truly a community organisation with no formal audition process and open
to anyone who feels they can keep up! It meets every Tuesday evening in term
time at Notre Dame High School and sometimes at Glasgow Gaelic School. It
gives three concerts a year on the first Wednesdays of December, March and
June all of which are in Adelaide’s on Bath Street. The orchestra is delighted to
have been asked to accompany Strathaven Choral Society for they rarely get the
opportunity to perform this operatic repertoire.
Tommy Fowler is a composer based in Glasgow. His
music, for orchestras, choirs, ensembles and soloists, has
been performed widely in Scotland as well as abroad.
He is a graduate of the University of Glasgow where he
gained a Ph.D in composition.
He has conducted the GSO since 1998. Under his baton
in 2003 the GSO gave the first public performance in
modern times of Edvard Grieg’s only symphony and in 2005 gave the first
performance of a suite taken from the music of the neglected Scottish composer
Mildred Marion Bowes-Lyon (a great-aunt of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen
Mother) who, in 1894, was the first female composer ever to have a success with
an opera.
Tommy is currently working on a project with the Paragon Ensemble making a
STRATHAVEN CHORAL SOCIETY
Registered Scottish Charity No. SC006127
STRATHAVEN CHORAL SOCIETY was founded in 1972 by the late David Knox and
draws its membership from across Lanarkshire and beyond. It is affiliated to Making
Music - the National Federation of Music Societies - and strives for a varied repertoire
and high standard of performance. It remains committed to the promotion of music.
Over the years the choir has performed over a hundred choral works, large and small,
by a wide range of composers, from Handel to Vaughan Williams. The repertoire also
includes opera, part songs and commissioned pieces. The Society has sung on BBC radio
and television and has performed in a variety of venues, mainly in the West of Scotland.
In recent years we have hosted visits by choirs from Denmark and Sweden. In each case
we were able to make return visits as their guests, to everyone’s musical and social
enjoyment. Future exchanges are being considered.
Strathaven Choral Society is particularly interested in involving young people in music
making and in musical appreciation and has in the past received national recognition for
its work with school children and in the community with three consecutive BT/NFMS
Innovation Awards.
The choir greatly appreciates the dedication and enthusiasm of Musical Director,
Christopher Barr and Rehearsal Accompanist, Razvan ˘ Luculescu.
We rehearse on Mondays at 7.30pm in the EVANGELICAL CHURCH, Lethame Road,
Strathaven, just up Lethame Road from the traffic lights. Anyone interested in joining the
Choral Society would be made most welcome.
