Italian songs and arias of the 17th and 18th centuries have for many years been 

essential repertoire for anyone learning to sing. But this music is principally known 

in romantic adaptations which the original composers would barely recognize.

As every singer and lover of French opera knows, 

editions of even the best-known French operatic 

arias are difficult – and sometimes expensive – to 

obtain. Roger Nichols’ scrupulously balanced 

selection of 19th-century French arias provides the 

perfect starting point for wider exploration. 

Nichols, who has championed French music in his 

writings, talks and broadcasts over three decades 

with eloquence and scholarship, is the ideal guide to 

this repertoire which, even today, is often neglected, 

misunderstood or inadequately performed. 

French music was almost exclusively operatic for 

the first half of the 19th century and the dominant 

musical art-form in the second half. Throughout the 

century it teetered uneasily between the extremes 

of grand opera and opéra-comique. The former, 

which reached its zenith in Berlioz’s epic Les Troyens 

(1863), sometimes strained after novelty and effect, 

whereas, opéra-comique perpetuated the classical 

French virtues of lightness, precision, wit and lyrical 

charm - and there are marvellous examples of these 

qualities in Nichols’ selection.

Jonathan Rathbone has accurately identified what the process of reading music and turning it into sounds actually involves. 

The course has taken over two years to develop and has been devised to take the guesswork out of sight-singing. It has 

been used very successfully both as an individual workbook and with choirs of singers both young and old.

After training as a chorister at Coventry Cathedral and choral scholar at Christ’s College Cambridge, where he read mathematics, 

Jonathan rounded-off his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music with a second degree, specializing in singing and 

composition. Jonathan’s compositional career includes works for theatre, film, radio, television, concert platform and the church, 

and a song-writing contract with Noel Gay Music. Recent large-scale commissions include Requiem for a Condemned Man – 

an extended work for two soloists, orchestra and choir and a 40 minute a cappella choral work for the Vasari Singers. 

Jonathan Rathbone was Musical Director and arranger for the Swingle Singers (1984–96) and has worked with many of the world’s 

leading musicians, from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Pierre Boulez to Stephan Grappelli and George Martin. 

He is now much in demand in Europe, the USA and UK, as a freelance choral director, arranger and workshop leader. 

A natural communicator, Jonathan leads workshops covering anything from close harmony singing, improvisation, choral conducting, 

vocal arranging to choral techniques.

Those interested in French music have 

often had reason to be grateful to Roger 

Nichols; his writings on Debussy, Ravel, 

Messiaen and Poulenc are indispensable 

to the music lover. 

Nichols now turns his attentions to the 

mélodie, where it is his mission to 

encourage singers to explore beyond the 

well-trodden paths of French song. In 

these two anthologies he does not ignore 

masterpieces by composers of the 

stature of Fauré and Duparc, but sets 

them alongside music - almost impossible 

to find elsewhere in print - by such 

under-estimated figures as Reber, Viardot, 

Massé and Paladilhe. 

Even the more celebrated songs are often 

not easily found in practical editions, 

which makes this selection an ideal 

starting point for wider exploration. In 

each of these volumes the songs 

appear in the chronological order of their 

composer’s birth, but Nichols somehow 

contrives a line-up of music which seems 

delightfully arbitrary at the same time as 

carefully designed to enrich everyone’s 

understanding of the mélodie. The books 

also contain a remarkable amount of 

scholarship, lightly worn and pithily 

expressed. 

As well as complete translations of the 

songs, there is a useful and concise 

introduction on singing in French, 

together with an illuminating historical note 

and critical commentary; and Nichols 

gives full due to the poets who were of 

crucial importance in the development of 

the mélodie tradition.

Italian songs and arias of the 17th and 18th centuries have for many
