The Multi- Specialty Foundation
For Aesthetic Surgical Excellence (F.A.S.E.)
The purpose and mission of the Multi-Specialty Foundation For Aesthetic Surgical Excellence
(F.A.S.E.), a not-for-profit educational foundation, is to foster a spirit of cooperation and
understanding between four specialties that are primarily involved in the science, practice and
teaching of facial aesthetic surgery. The foundation’s main objective is the
creation and maintenance of a recurring annual symposium that includes
the leading educators and teachers from the fields of Oculoplastic
Surgery, Dermatology, Facial Plastic Surgery and Plastic Surgery.
I would like to personally welcome each of you to our
sixth annual Multi-Specialty Symposium in Las Vegas. For the past twenty years I have
worked very hard to bring together those in the Four Core Specialties of Dermatology,
Oculoplastic Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery, and Plastic Surgery for the purpose
of sharing information in a collegial and non-threatening environment . I
have had a lot of help along the way from my co-chair Edwin Cortez and
from our ‘Steering Committee” which has included as founders Doctors
Maas, Paul, Terino, Moy, Connell, McCollough, Goldberg, and Anderson. All
of these doctors are giants in their respective fields and without them I am
absolutely certain that we would not have been able to succeed.
I feel strongly that the faculty that we have assembled for this particular meeting
is the very best Multi-Specialty faculty ever assembled. We have the Presidents of the
four core specialties represented as well as many of the leading educators from each
specialty. In organizing the symposium, I have always tried to keep things small and
intimate which I feel creates the best learning environment.
This year we will once again divide the meeting into three separate but equal sessions.
The main “plenary” session will feature a series of 15 minute talks on Rhinoplasty,
Rejuvenation Surgery, and Aesthetic Skin Treatments as well as a discussion of
Emerging Trends and Technology. There will be panel discussions on Socio-Economic
issues as well as some of the Controversies that we often find ourselves discussing in
the back of the room among one another. Simultaneous sessions will take place featuring
continuous “Masters Seminars” where a specific topic is addressed in an in-depth
“How I Do It “ format. We have selected only those who are known for tremendous
expertise on the topic being discussed. In fact many have world wide recognition for
this expertise. Additionally many of our attendees have found that this symposium has
and will continue to address the issues related to effectively running and promoting the
cosmetic practice. This session will again feature those who are experts in their fields.
Many of our physicians find it extremely valuable to have members of their office staff
attend these sessions. We are not aware of any other meeting that offers anything this
comprehensive!
So again welcome to each and every one of you. Thank you so much for taking time
from your practice even in this trying economic climate. For the benefit of our patients,
let’s all learn from one another in this very special Multi-Disciplinary environment.
Program Supporters
This activity is supported by
educational grants from:
It is my pleasure to welcome faculty, attendees,
friends and all those involved in the sixth annual Facial
Cosmetic Surgery Symposium. It truly takes a full community
of dedicated individuals to create such a
sophisticated educational extravaganza.
Bringing the core specialties of facial plastic
surgery, plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery
and dermatology together, to engage one
another and all attendees in an invaluable
learning experience is no simple task. Each
of these groups bring tremendous experience,
knowledge, and the desire to share these valuable assets with
all of us.
In this year’s Symposium, attendees and faculty will have the
unique opportunity to listen to a 15 to 20 minute lecture in
the general session and then often times, if they have interest,
attend a Master’s Seminar which addresses the same
topic in much more detail. Important controversies in aesthetic
surgery will be addressed and of course safety issues will be
emphasized. As usual, complications and their treatment will
be discussed openly and honestly.
Our emerging trends symposia will give us all a brief and
honest view of what the future holds for us and our patients.
The bottom line is safe and effective treatment of our patients.
Multi-Specialty education goes a long way to fulfill these goals.
Welcome to our home in Las Vegas and remember “What you
learn in Vegas goes home with you to benefit your patients!”
Highlights for 2010
The Business of Plastic Surgery:
Marketing & Management in 2010
After years of receiving suggestions on our meeting evaluations asking
for more management and business oriented talks, several years ago we
formalized the process by creating what is now known as our “Business
of Plastic Surgery” workshop. While other meetings have recently added
a few lectures in this area, we have elected to make it a full four-day
workshop. We have been very careful in faculty selection and have been
fortunate enough to engage some of the brightest and most experienced
speakers in the field. With this in mind we hope that you find this
session as valuable as the two scientific sessions and we know you
will want to spend time in these practical and targeted lectures as well.
If you are like many of our attendees, you will wish you had brought
members of your staff to listen to the advice offered. According to the
evaluations we have seen over the past three years, the suggestions and
information taken home by our attendees have been invaluable to their
respective practices. These sessions are not certified for CME/CE credit.
Master Seminars
The term “Masters Seminars” was first used by Dr Waldman in 1991
at an AAFPRS Annual Symposium. These are in-depth “How I Do It”
workshops given by only those who we have identified as experts –
or masters – on the topic being addressed. In our annual evaluations
there are always comments asking for more of these in-depth
presentations and this year we are pleased that we in fact have inserted
40 separate courses addressing virtually every topic related to Facial
Aesthetic Surgery. In fact, many of our attendees may want to spend
most of their time in this particular track of the meeting.
AAFPRS Video Learning Center
The AAFPRS John Dickinson Memorial Library, which travels to the
AAFPRS Foundation meetings and courses will be present at this
meeting and will showcase its most recent aging face and rhinoplasty
titles. All registered physicians and guests will have access to the
Video Learning Center and will be able to request viewings from over
300 titles. The Video Learning Center allows physicians the opportunity
to view procedural videos prior to their purchase.
• How should fat be harvested and treated to improve survival?
• Is fat processing important for the success of the procedure?
• Should fat be injected in its “native form”
• When should fat grafting be preferable to other injectable fillers?
• How much fat should be injected?
• Are fat grafting results really as predicatable as our lecturers seem to show?
• Where are the problems we hear about from our colleagues?
• How long should we tell our patients that the swelling would last?
• When can I go back to work?
• How much must one overcorrect?
• What about stem cells and fat grafting?
• Is there any risk of neoplastic induction from injecting stem cells?
