OBSERVATION WEEKS 1 & 2 / DESCRIPTION
Week 1 & 2:
In these 2 weeks we had the opportunity to observe classes and understand the
methodology that the teacher applies at college level teaching. We saw the way
the teacher perform the warm up activities with the students and also the way he
introduces the topics, he seems very patient and friendly with the student, he works
really hard to motivate the students and make them participate. Likewise, we saw
the way the students interact with the teacher and the oral evaluations he made.
During the first week of observation we helped the teacher to monitor and
supervise an evaluation test that he passed to the students, it felt really nice being
there supervising and checking on the students we also helped them and every
doubt they had.
Then we took the evaluation tests to check them and assign grades to each of
them.
Conclusion: working with students from 1 st year seems really difficult in terms of
keeping the class dynamic and quite, it is hard for a teacher to deal with a group
where most of the students are teenagers but there is small group that shows
respect and attention to the teacher.
TEACHING PRACTICE / DESCRIPTION.
Week 3:
This week we started teaching, at first we felt really nervous because it was our
first time at teaching in a university level, before the class started the teacher gave
us some advices that were really helpful during the developing of the lesson. After
that, he introduced us to the class said why we were there. Then we started the
class with a fun warm up called “Virtual Hotel” and it also was much related with
the topic of the lesson which was “Staying at a hotel”. We taught the students the t
most common hotel problems that someone can have; we also presented to them
some definitions of some words and how to use prepositions of place through the
presentation of some slides.
During the second session of the lesson, we practiced the pronunciation of some
words ending in –tion and we practiced the usage of prepositions.
Conclusion:
We concluded that starting the class with a warm up can increase the level of
motivation of the students and that pictures, slides, and extra information of the
topic really help the students to comprehend and internalize a specific vocabulary.
Week 4:
During this week my classmates were in charge of the class they did it very nice,
their topic of the lesson was about music and opera, they play a song and gave the
lyrics to the students, they have a little of problem to manage the class but the
teacher helped them to continue with the lesson, I think sometimes it is difficult to
hold students` attention and keep them interested on the lesson.
Conclusion:
Being a teacher sometimes requires a lot of patient and effort in order to make the
class very successful.
Week 5:
During this week we were asked to teach 2 lessons in a Technical English II class,
the teacher in charge was our dear and beloved teacher Miss Reyes she was
thoughtful with us, she introduced us and said why we were there and also when
the students were going crazy and making a lot noise she shut them up that was
really helpful to continue with the class.
We taught about “franchising” and explained what is a franchise, a franchisee, and
a franchiser. Even though, the topic seemed a little complex, the class was really
participative many students got the idea of the topic and they were not afraid of
participate.
Then, the next session we explained the grammatical structure of the lesson we
perform some drills to help them to familiarize with the Present Perfect tense and
with the Present Perfect Progressive. We kind of had some issues with the
equipment and the memory flash card; we had interesting information to share with
the class but at the end nothing work.
MEMORY BOOK
Conclusion:
The conclusion of this week was, that we have to be patient with the students that
misbehave during a lesson and we also have to be very careful with the equipment
we are planning to use we should always have a back-up like plan B if something
go wrong with the equipment.
Week 6 & 7:
During these weeks we were attending and listening to the students´ oral
presentation they were talking about specific topics like Stress, their Favorite
Places, Food, Movies and other common topics. The teacher was checking the
oral performance, the knowledge of the topic, the way they manage the
vocabulary, fluency and coherence. We realized that most of the students did not
care about the evaluation and they were like not interested in participated and very
shy and that made the teacher really mad and he told them that they should be
more responsible with the activities.
During week number seven, the teacher passed the last mid-term students felt it
really hard and confusing but some of them felt easy, we said good bye that day
and expressed how thankful we feel with the teacher for giving us the opportunity
MEMORY BOOK
Conclusion:
In conclusion of these weeks, we said that most of the students are very afraid of
making mistakes in front of their peers and that’s the reason why most of them
refuse to participate.
RECOMMENDATIONS.
It is important to praise and appreciate students´ effort even if they are
making mistake we have to make them feel confident and secure by telling
them that it is enough the fact that they have the courage to participate.
Teacher must show tolerance toward students’ behavior and never take it
personally.
It will be easier to teach the lesson by using extra information and extra
material.
Teacher should teach the meaning of words through the use of pictures and
through the creation of situations where those words are used.
It is important to insist to the students to bring their doubts out and try to
clear them out to make the learning process much easier.
