Two o<strong>the</strong>r problems that cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> color <strong>the</strong> character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> media, and frustrate those<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> aid effort, are <strong>the</strong> strident nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country's party press and a burgeon<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pornography <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

After be<strong>in</strong>g refused service at <strong>the</strong> Democratic <strong>Press</strong>, Zeri i Popullit has cont<strong>in</strong>ued publish<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g an ancient hot metal L<strong>in</strong>otype for typesett<strong>in</strong>g and a 1940's v<strong>in</strong>tage pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g press. The<br />

layout is Iron Curta<strong>in</strong> grey: <strong>the</strong> type is faded, <strong>the</strong> newspr<strong>in</strong>t is yellow, and <strong>the</strong>re are rarely any<br />

pho<strong>to</strong>graphs. Yet, it is <strong>the</strong> most widely read newspaper <strong>in</strong> Tirana.<br />

"People buy it for <strong>the</strong> same reason <strong>the</strong>y go <strong>to</strong> see a box<strong>in</strong>g match," one journalist <strong>to</strong>ld me. "They<br />

want <strong>to</strong> see some blood, and Zeri i Popullit is always sw<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g at Berisha."<br />

None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se criticisms seem <strong>to</strong> bo<strong>the</strong>r Senior Edi<strong>to</strong>r Thoma Gellci. He is relish<strong>in</strong>g his current<br />

success and describes Zeri i Popullit's ris<strong>in</strong>g fortunes like a vic<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>in</strong> a Cold War campaign.<br />

"We've made $30,000 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last three months, and soon we are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>stall <strong>the</strong> best fourcolor<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g press <strong>in</strong> <strong>Albania</strong>," he said. "And <strong>the</strong>n we will underbid that so-called Democratic<br />

<strong>Press</strong>, and all <strong>the</strong> newspapers will come <strong>to</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t here. And we will build <strong>the</strong> tallest skyscraper <strong>in</strong><br />

Tirana and rent out <strong>of</strong>fice space <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m all." [26]<br />

When I smiled at his postur<strong>in</strong>g he jumped up and walked <strong>to</strong> his desk. "You th<strong>in</strong>k I'm kidd<strong>in</strong>g?"<br />

He picked up a stack <strong>of</strong> newspapers and dropped <strong>the</strong>m on <strong>the</strong> table <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> me. "Look at all<br />

<strong>the</strong> newspapers we pr<strong>in</strong>t now. We pr<strong>in</strong>t more than anyone, and <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> most respected and<br />

well-read <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> newspapers."<br />

In <strong>the</strong> stack were issues <strong>of</strong> an <strong>Albania</strong>n imitation <strong>of</strong> Playboy and a tabloid named Erotika.<br />

Blonde-haired and pictured <strong>in</strong> opulent sett<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> playmates looked suspiciously like imports<br />

whose pictures had been repr<strong>in</strong>ted from Western magaz<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

"You call this respectable journalism?" I said, po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Playboy.<br />

"It IS serious journalism," he said <strong>in</strong>dignantly. "People buy it for <strong>the</strong> articles." His newspaper<br />

may have been shunned by Western aid organizations, but that hasn't soured him on capitalist<br />

propaganda.<br />

Zeri i Popullit is by no means <strong>the</strong> only newspaper <strong>to</strong> peddle pornography and <strong>the</strong> party l<strong>in</strong>e. Most<br />

<strong>Albania</strong>n newspapers are owned by political parties, and <strong>the</strong>ir pages are dom<strong>in</strong>ated by political<br />

articles and op<strong>in</strong>ion pieces with very little break<strong>in</strong>g news.<br />

"We used <strong>to</strong> not trust <strong>the</strong> media because we had one party propaganda," said Kallamata. "Now<br />

we don't trust <strong>the</strong>m because we have multiparty propaganda. We don't have a problem with free<br />

expression <strong>of</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ions <strong>in</strong> this country. We have <strong>to</strong>o many op<strong>in</strong>ions and not enough <strong>in</strong>formative<br />

news." [27]<br />

The frustration with <strong>the</strong> party press is most apparent among <strong>the</strong> young and reflects a potentially<br />

serious problem <strong>of</strong> alienation among future readers. It was <strong>the</strong> students from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />
