Asia is driving demand <strong>for</strong> steelmaking raw materials<br />

• BOF share of steelmaking is increasing<br />

(65.5% in 2006, compared to 57.6% in 1996)<br />

• A lack of scrap + higher steel demand is<br />

driving key Asian steelmakers to rely more on<br />

<strong>the</strong> BOF steelmaking<br />

• Asia in 1996 BOF steelmaking = 56.1%, by<br />

2006 = 76.5%:<br />

– China – 1996 = 51.6%, by 2006 = 87.0%<br />

– Japan – 1996 = 66.7%, by 2006 = 74.0%<br />
