Chicks in cash chase
More money for commemoration
The Federal Government will provide the Mallee electorate with
an extra $25,000 to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac. The
money will help communities undertake projects commemorating
Australian servicemen and women in the First World War.
unique fundraiser will
A help Horsham Agricultural
Society pay for an
urgent electrical upgrade at
Horsham Showgrounds.
One hundred women will
walk 100 kilometres to raise
money for the Horsham Agricultural
Society, Horsham
East Rotary Club and women’s
health charities.
‘100 Chicks Chase 100
Clicks’ is aiming to raise
$100,000 by walking from
Halls Gap to Horsham over
four days on the long weekend
in March, 2014.
The idea is the brainchild of
Di Ellifson, of Horsham, who
participated in a similar event
when she lived in Kununurra,
WA, in 2010.
Horsham Agricultural Society
sponsorship and promotions
co-ordinator Andrea
Cross said the society’s share
of the money raised was critical
to repair lighting at the
showgrounds.
“The lights have become
dangerous, due to bad weather
and age, so we need an electrical
upgrade. To be able to do
that, we need to do something
like 100 Chicks Chase 100
Chicks, otherwise we can’t
have a show next year,” she
said.
“The safety and security of
the community is paramount
and there is an immediate
need to fix the lighting.”
Participants will walk about
25 kilometres on rural roads
each day, between farms
owned by agricultural society
members, where they will
camp at night.
Mrs Cross said the campsites
would include portable showers,
toilets and cooks to supply
meals and snacks.
“Participants are required to
bring their own crockery, cutlery,
swags and personal items
and clothing. We encourage
walkers to dress up in theme.
It’s not essential but makes for
a bit extra fun! There will be
a few fundraising challenges
along the way and entertainment
provided each night,”
she said.
Mrs Cross said participants
must be over 18 and pay a
registration fee of $100, due
on January 7.
“Each participant must raise
a minimum of $1000, including
your $100 deposit. You can
ask 50 friends for $20 each or
20 friends for $50 each. You
can raise money however you
like but we ask that you run
it by us first to ensure correct
branding and procedures are
carried out. Women can also
seek sponsorship from local
businesses,” she said.
Mrs Cross said organisers
were creating a website dedicated
to the walk to allow
people to donate online.
Interested people can obtain
a registration form by phoning
Andrea on 0400 425 254
or visiting www.horshamshow.com.au.
Grampians Tourism’s social-media
Instagrampians marketing campaign
has attracted more than 3000 images,
generated 222,400 ‘likes’ and reached
more than five million users.
A three-month photo competition, Instagrampians
encouraged visitors and residents
to post photos on Instagram during
spring, using the hashtag #grampiansinspring
Instagrampians targeted travellers, inviting
them to share their Grampians
experiences on Instagram.
Visitors from across Victoria, interstate
and around the world, including the United
States, Netherlands, New Zealand,
Taiwan and Japan, hash-tagged their posts
in the promotion.
Grampians Tourism chief executive Will
success of the region’s first Instagram
campaign.
“The quality of photos posted for Instagrampians
was phenomenal; we were
delighted to see our visitors capture the
natural beauty of the Grampians in spring
and share this with us and their followers,”
he said.
UK awards win
for Ararat play
By LAUREN HENRY
Ararat playwrights Rob
Smith and John Mawson
have enjoyed international
success with their
play Just A Straight Man
winning a string of awards
in the United Kingdom.
Tiger Theatrical Productions
are performing the one-act
play, attracting multiple award
wins at five of the top United
Kingdom drama festivals.
Just A Straight Man is about
a hit duo comedy act preparing
to perform on stage
but tension soon escalates between
the pair, leading to a
surprise twist.
The play also gained a nomination
at the All England Winners
Final.
Smith and Mawson, both exteachers,
formed their scriptwriting
partnership in 1992
when they were working at
Ararat Secondary College.
“John and I were helping
with musical productions and
thought we could write something
better than what we were
working with,” Smith said.
“We started working with
music teacher Ros Jennings,
who is now working overseas,
and formed Play On Words.”
Smith said he and Mawson
also wrote scripts for theatre
restaurants, one-act plays and
worked with song-writers to
assist them with musicals.
“It’s more of a hobby than
anything,” Smith said.
“I’m retired now but I still
work with Beaufort and Lake
Bolac secondary schools and
Ararat primary schools on
their productions.”
But Play On Words’ biggest
success came this year with
Just A Straight Man winning
countless awards and being
made into a short film.
“We were pretty chuffed
with that,” Smith said.
“Tiger Theatre is a pretty
professional company, and
Wimmera police have reminded people
planning for summer holidays to take
precautions to avoid thefts from homes,
businesses, clubhouses and rural properties
while they are away.
Western Division Four Crime Prevention Officer
Leading Senior Constable Eddy MacDonald
of Ararat urged people to consider making
a checklist before they departed for holidays.
“There are two elements necessary for a crime
to occur – the offender and the opportunity. We
can reduce the opportunity by planning beforehand,”
he said.
Sen Const MacDonald said people should go
through simple steps before leaving the family
home, property or clubhouse. These included:
• Making the property have the appearance
that someone was home. Arrange for a house
sitter or ask a trusted neighbour for help;
• Locking all doors and windows;
• Improving security of the house or business;
PLAYWRIGHTS: Rob Smith and John Mawson from Ararat scriptwriting
partnership Play On Words are thrilled their play Just A
Straight Man won several drama festival awards in the United
Kingdom this year.
Picture: GEOFF PENNA
they are going to perform Just
A Straight Man again.”
Smith said he and Mawson
had a good feeling about Just
A Straight Man when they
completed the script.
They have also enjoyed success
with a musical called
Charades, which has been
performed by more than 100
schools.
“Musicals tend to be a bit
more of a success in terms of
money because we get 15 percent
of the box office, whereas
with one acts it is just a flat
fee,” Smith said.
Ahead of their time
Smith said another musical
of note for them was School
Rocks, which was similar to
the popular United States musical
High School Musical.
“But we wrote School Rocks
15 years before High School
Musical,” Smith said.
Smith said he had seen Charades
performed more than
20 times.
“You always get a bit of
a kick out seeing the kids
perform one of our scripts,”
he said.
Smith said he and Mawson
had written about 30 plays
together.
“We have two or three shows
that are waiting for music to
be written,” he said.
“John and I can write a script
fairly quickly, but to get music
written can be a long process.”
Both Smith and Mawson
performed in an Ararat theatre
restaurant style play this year -
a rarity for Smith, who usually
assists with sounds and visual
effects in local productions.
“I was running from backstage
to on stage to perform. It
was busy,” he said.
Police holiday warning
• Securing valuables in a safe place;
• Removing alcohol and other goods from
places of sale.
“People can also stop their mail or ensure it
is collected regularly and not overflowing in
the letterbox. You can also put a lock on your
letter box to prevent identity theft,” Sen Const
MacDonald said.
“You can also arrange for a neighbour or
friend to take your bins out and in. Even ask
them to occasionally park their car in your
driveway.”
Sen Const MacDonald added that it was
important to avoid leaving spare keys to any
vehicle on a property in a house or business.
He said other security measures involved
people engraving personal details onto valuable
items and photographing valuables and property
for later identification.
Sen Const MacDonald said people could call
local police or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
strongly many Wimmera
people feel about a need
to fast-track Western Highway
development.
The caller, who had woken
to news of another highway
tragedy involving an horrific
truck crash, had felt compelled
to ‘find someone’ to help him
stress a need for governments
to take the issue seriously.
The caller had lost a colleague
in a highway crash several
years ago and the latest
incident near Stawell fuelled
his firm belief that governments
had to prioritise a project
to create a dual-carriage
highway across the region.
He posed the question:
“If you were travelling in
a car at a combined speed of
200kph towards a brick wall
and you needed to miss it with
a margin for error of less than
two metres, how well would
you do?
“Now imagine the scenario
involving two large trucks,
both travelling at the 100kph
speed limit in the opposite
direction, again with a margin
for error of less than two
metres between them. This is
what Western Highway truck
drivers have to deal with every
day and night.”
In short, his message was
that there was ‘simply not
enough’ room on the highway
through much of the Wimmera
to safely allow for the
amount of truck traffic travelling
in both directions.
Dual lanes
Many of us have closely followed
a project to extend the
highway’s dual carriageway
west beyond Ballarat.
We have also noted with
frustration the lack of government
guarantees on the project’s
longevity, regardless of
it always falling well short of
the long-recognised highway
fatigue zone between Stawell
and Bordertown.
It seemed amazing many
years ago that dual-carriageway
traffic on the highway
stopped at Ballarat and started
again at Tailem Bend in SA.
What’s even more amazing
is that after finally moving on
a concept to extend the duallane
highway from Ballarat to
Stawell, project completion is
‘subject to future funding’.
We acknowledge the
$505-million allocated to the
Ballarat-Stawell project by
state and federal governments.
We also applaud the governments
on finishing work,
including an eight-kilometre
section between Ballarat and
Burrumbeet and a three-kilometre
section east of Beaufort.
But we remind authorities
that the critical and arguably
most dangerous section
of highway is between Ararat
and the SA border.
More than 5500 vehicles, including
1500 trucks, travel on
the highway west of Ballarat
daily with estimates that the
figure will double by 2025.
We want a firm guarantee
that we will have, in the foreseeable
future, a safe and efficient
highway through our
region.
been bouncing to a special
rhythm.
African drumming teacher
Kofi Kunkpe has worked with
health-service staff and residents
at Warracknabeal and
Hopetoun campuses to teach
them the significance of African
rhythms and the ‘illuminating’
effect they have on
the listener.
Mr Kunkpe is an Ewe master
drummer from the Volta
region of Ghana in west Africa.
He is passionate about
traditional culture and helping
to improve the lives of the
people of Ghana.
After early studies in Nigeria
he travelled throughout Ghana
and Burkina Faso, promoting,
performing and teaching
Ghana’s traditional dance and
drumming forms.
Mr Kunkpe has since performed
and taught with a wide
variety of companies in New
York, Africa and Australia.
His teaching extends to
working with schools, agedcare
services and disadvantaged
children and he regularly
teaches drumming, dance
and flute in schools in Africa’s
Cape Coast region.
He is now based in Melbourne
Bouncing to an African rhythm
chief executive Catherine
Morley said campus-resident
reaction was ‘quite amazing’.
“Everyone was given their
own piece of genuine west African
percussion to play along
with and some of the residents
were really getting into the
pulse,” she said.
“But there wasn’t a single
resident without a big smile.”
Ms Morley said events such
as Mr Kunkpe’s visit were
important stimulants for residents.
“Health is predominantly
about being happy and African
rhythms are so vibrant
and inspiring that you can’t
help but bounce along to the
beat. It’s addictive.”
Mini horse happiness
Rose Arnold’s miniature horses looking for companions for their full-size to ever be on the cover of Horse Deals,
not only bring her a lot of joy but horses.
a well-know horse magazine,” she said.
also delight the many visitors to her
Netherby farm and visiting nursery.
The pint-sized ponies dot the paddocks
at Ridgy Didge Little Horse Haven in
Netherby, north of Nhill.
Ms Arnold breeds the miniature horses
to sell, and show, and also travels to
events, bringing delight to children.
“We have had elderly people visit us on
bus trips and recently had a bus load of
retired farmers from Kaniva come to see
us,” she said.
Ms Arnold said she had sold her ìminiesî
to a variety of people, from a race horse
owner who was trying to encourage his
wife to be involved in horses to people
“They are a lot more economical than
normal horses, they mow your lawn and
fertilise your rose bushes,” she said.
“They are perfect for small children,
and a good way to see if children are going
to keep going with horses. It teaches
them how to look after a horse.
“All the little horses we have are pretty
placid - their nothing like Shetland ponies.”
Ms Arnold said she had enjoyed much
success at shows in Adelaide, putting her
miniature horses in competition.
After taking a rest from horse shows,
she now plans to make a come-back.
“We also have the only miniature horse
LITTLE HORSE, LOTS OF
JOY: Rose Arnold with one the
miniature horses she breeds
at the Ridgy Didge Little Horse
Haven in Netherby, north of
Nhill.
Picture: JAMES FIDLER
Ms Arnold said she currently had six
miniature mares in foal, and planned on
breeding more in the future.
“I’ve been involved with big horses my
whole life, and started breeding miniature
horses about 16 years ago,” she said.
Ms Arnold said a hip replacement and
back problems led her to down-scale from
larger horses to miniatures.
She was previously based in Chetwynd
and Penola, and made Netherby home
about seven years ago.
“I have taken over some horses for
friends so I am living the dream for them
too. They bring me so much joy,” she
said.
PLANTING A GIFT: National Trust Victoria chief executive Martin Purslow, left, Aboriginal Affairs
Indigenous hands
Indigenous elder Kevin
“I think the missionaries had
Coombs described
a good heart when they looked
Ebenezer Mission being
after our people.”
formally handed back to
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs
Jeanette Powell, accom-
traditional owners as ‘overwhelming’panied
by Member for Lowan
Hugh Delahunty, said the ceremony
was a ‘historic occasion’.
Mr Coombs is Australia’s
first Aboriginal paralympian,
competing in wheelchair basketball
in five Paralympics,
including the first Paralympic
in 1960.
He is a Wotjobaluk man,
whose long list of achievements
includes the Order of
Australia Medal, Australian
Sports Medal, Basketball Australia
Hall of Fame inductee, a
Deadly lifetime achievement
award and a NAIDOC award.
Mr Coombs made a special
trip to the Wimmera for a
ceremony on Thursday, which
attracted about 100 people to
Victoria’s oldest mission.
National Trust of Victoria
chairman Graeme Blackman
signed the Ebenezer Mission
land title over to Barengi Gadjin
Land Councilís chair Janine
Coombs.
“It ís very significant for me,
because my great grandfather
Albert Coombs lived at Ebenezer
Mission,” she said.
“It is a great honour to be
Kevin Coombs
here today. I have my grandkids
here with me and I hope
today lives in their heart. It is
very important for everyone to
know where they come from.”
Mr Coombs described his
great grandfather as ‘a bit of a
radical’ towards the missionís
management.
“He wrote letters to the government,
saying they needed
more funding to buy sheep
to be self sufficient,” Mr
Coombs said.
Mr Coombs also welcomed
Barengi Gadjin Land Councilís
plan to take tourists on
tours of the mission.
“It’s very important for
school children and everyone
to know how the people lived
here in the past,” he said.
“Aboriginal people will have
a say on what happens on this
site and running tours for tourists,”
he said.
National Trust Victoria, custodians
of the mission for the
past 45 years, donated three
apple trees from its Ripponlea
heritage orchard, on the mission
site.
Ebenezer Mission was first
gazetted in 1861 as the Lake
Hindmarsh Aboriginal Reserve
and closed in 1904.
German missionaries from
the Moravian Church ran
the mission, with the aim to
‘Christianise’ Indigenous people.
The site, which was traditionally
a corroboree ground
for the Wotjobaluk people,
also contains remnant buildings
including the missionís
church, cemetery and several
other buildings. There are a
large number of unmarked
graves at the site.
Men’s health program
finalist in state award
Judges have listed Wimmera Uniting
Care’s Rural and Remote Engagement
program or RARE among the state’s best
health and wellbeing projects.
RARE was a finalist in the ‘Improving Mental
Wellbeing’ category at 2013 Victorian Health
Promotion Foundation Awards.
RARE is a community-based mental-health
program targeted at men in Hindmarsh and
West Wimmera shires.
It started in 2010 to address the emotional and
physical trauma experience by men, especially
farmers and their families in the wake of
drought, fires, floods and remote conditions
prevalent in the region.
Wimmera Uniting Care had to demonstrate
how RARE ‘created resilient and connected
individuals, organisations and communities to
precent the ill-effects of social isolation and
exclusion’.
Wimmera Uniting Care mental-health
manager Mick Clark said it was an honour for
Wimmera Uniting Care to be a finalist and be
rewarded for taking a proactive approach to
improving mental wellbeing in the region.
leaving the windows down to let out hot air for
for pets or the doors unlocked, or valuables on
display, we invite people to take advantage of
our carelessness.
Never leave children alone in vehicles during
hot weather.
During this time of year when we are rushed,
we sometimes place expensive and valuable
gifts in the car in full view. We can leave handbags
or wallets on seats which can be simply
too tempting for criminals.
The best advice I can give is to lock your car
properly. If it’s hot, put up a windscreen shade
rather than leave the windows wound down.
Leave the pets at home on a warm or hot day.
Thefts from vehicles occur in residential areas
as much as shopping centres so don’t advertise
your valuables, not even in your driveway.
Should a thief get into your car don’t make
it any worse by providing the car keys or your
handbag or wallet for their use.
The following hints might be helpful:
• If you must leave valuables in the car, put
them in the boot.
• Remove GPS units and mobile phones from
cradles - take them with you. Do not put your
home address in the GPS.
• Take out personal documents such as registration
or drivers licence forms, banking details,
receipts, anything that can be used in identity
theft.
• Do not leave house or garage keys in the car.
Write a mobile phone number rather than your
home address or car registration on the keys.
• Park in your driveway or garage. If you must
park on the street, park in a well-lit area.
• Remove your tools from trays or lock them
in secure cases.
Number plates
Thieves steal more than 10,000 number plates
in Victoria each year. Install anti-theft screws or
pop rivet your number plates. Anti-theft screws
are available from hardware and some automotive
stores.
Lock your car – get into the habit to always
physically check if it is locked.
Should you see something suspicious in your
neighbourhood call your local police or contact
Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Remember,
if its worth noting then its worth letting police
know. If you require immediate police attendance
call 000.
Dangers at Christmas
Christmas is nearly upon us, and
for most of us it’s a time of joy
and excitement to be shared with our
loved ones, including our pets.
Many of us will spend Boxing Day with
a bellyache and a sore head as a result of
overindulgence, but there are also risks
that the festive season poses to the health
of our pets, which as owners we would do
well to avoid.
Christmas fare is certainly delicious,
but not always healthy for dogs and cats.
In particular, some of the risks involved
with including our furry friend in a festive
feast include:
• Fruit mince pies and fruit cakes are
a definite no-go zone to pets because
sultanas and grapes can lead to kidney
failure in dogs and cats. Even macadamia
nuts might cause muscle weakness, vomiting
or lethargy.
• Nutmeg, a common ingredient in
Christmas cooking, can be toxic to animals
if given in large amounts and might
lead to problems with pets’ nervous system.
• Chocolate treats must be avoided,
unless they are made with pet-safe chocolate.
It might lead to tremors, seizures and
in extreme cases, death. Owners should
be mindful not to leave chocolate on tables
or wrapped in presents under the tree.
• Onions should also be avoided because
FIDO-FRIENDLY FESTIVITIES: Pet owners need to take extra care of their pets at
Christmas time.
Picture: NEVE LAWSON
they are toxic to pets.
• High-fat foods can cause pancreatic
complaints and gut upsets. Pancreatitis,
or inflammation of the pancreas, can be a
painful and serious disease of both dogs
and cats which can occur as a result of
consuming too much fatty food.
• Cooked bones, including ham and
turkey bones, are easily shattered when
chewed, and can result in constipation, or
even worse, obstruction of the intestines.
Stick to raw, pet-friendly bones.
Many cats will not choose to eat harmful
foods such as chocolate and fruit cake,
but dogs are not always so sensible.
Owners should be particularly aware
of where their canine friends are when
Christmas lunch is on and ask friends and
family not to give them treats which may
cause them harm.
A nice raw bone, a dental chew, or a pigs
ear will keep dogs happy and away from
the table at lunch time.
Christmas decorations can also pose a
threat. Kittens and cats will love to play
with tinsel and string, but if swallowed
these can cause serious damage to the
gastrointestinal tract.
Cats climbing wobbly Christmas trees
are in danger of pulling them over on
themselves, and while Christmas lights
might be enticing, curious pups or cats
chewing through electrical cords can put
themselves at risk of electrocution.
With a little bit of forethought and care,
Christmas can be a wonderful time for
our pets as well as us, and many of the
dangers are easily avoided.
Christmas to you and your furry friends.
Keeping insurance
Wednesday, December 11, 2013 www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au 17
premiums affordable
Have you noticed that every year
when you renew your life insurance
policy your premiums seem
to be higher and higher? Is this just
part of life or can you do something
about it?
When it comes to life insurance and
managing your premiums, you have the
option of paying ‘stepped’ or ‘level’ premiums.
Stepped premiums are the most
common but level premiums are catching
on and if they suit your circumstances,
may be worth considering.
What’s the difference?
A stepped premium increases each year.
The amount it increases will depend on
your age. As a very rough guide, you
can expect your premium to rise by the
amounts shown below:
Age
Annual Increase
20-30 Little, if any
30-40 6%
40-50 8%
50-60 11%
Above 60 15%
Level premiums remain the same
throughout the life of the policy. The
premium is calculated on the average
premium, meaning you will pay significantly
more while you are younger, but
on the upside you pay a lot less when you
get older.
Most claims tend to occur between the
ages of 40 and 55. This can also be the
time that the cost of stepped premiums
can be too expensive for many of us to
keep. By using level premiums, your premium
will stay the same. And the younger
Ask a financial question
video Q&A series, please submit your question at www.meritumfg.com.au.
you lock the premium in, the lower the
premium will be.
Which is best for you?
There are a few things you should
consider before deciding which type of
is best:
• What cash flow pattern suits you best?
You may prefer the lower stepped premium
when you’re younger because you
expect to have a higher income in the future.
If your cash flow is comfortable now,
you may prefer the higher level premium
now so future payments are not a burden.
• How long will you hold your policy? If
you keep your policy for less than seven
years you will usually be better off paying
stepped premiums.
• Will you need the same level of cover
in the future? You may need less cover
in the future as you pay off debts and
build assets. If so, as stepped premiums
increase, you might be able to gradually
reduce your cover to keep the cost affordable.
Before you make any changes to your
life insurance policy, talk to your adviser
about which option is best for you now
and in the future.
Partnership project reaps more rewards
The Stawell Steps-Monash
Steps project has won
another national award.
The project, the result of a
partnership between Northern
Grampians Shire Council and
10 organisations, is the local
government winner of 2013
Resilient Australia Award.
Officials announced the national
win at Canberra.
The project had earlier won
the Victorian prize.
The success follows the project’s
win for a small council
accolade at National Awards
for Local Government earlier
this year.
Mayor Cr Kevin Erwin said
the council was delighted to
accept the award on behalf of
Monash University – Faculty
of Art Design and Architecture,
Krause Bricks, Country
Education Program and Wimmera
Development Association.
“Winning one national
award is a significant achievement
for a small rural council,
but this latest accolade highlights
our ability to deliver
big projects that benefit our
communities,” he said.
The Stawell Steps-Monash
Steps make up a flood-mitigation
It has become a ‘functional
