understanding oE the principles <strong>of</strong> safe anaesthesia was a necessary part<br />
<strong>of</strong> undergraduate medical education. His conviction in this respect was<br />
expressed in the preface to the 1901 edition <strong>of</strong> his textbook<br />
'Anaesthetics and thelr ~dministration' , written For students and<br />
practitioners, as follows: 'I have atternpted to meet the requirements <strong>of</strong><br />
the true student rather than those <strong>of</strong> men who are content to regard<br />
thtvnselves, and to be regarded, as mere dispensers <strong>of</strong> drugs' .<br />
