Huawei IDEOS is Top Smart Phone in Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya, May 17, 2011 - Huawei today announced
that the Huawei IDEOS is the most popular
smart phone in Kenya for the first quarter of 2011.
This is also according to a report by GFK Retail and
Technology, one of the world’s leading independent
market researcher tracking sales data in technical consumer
goods and entertainment in over 80 countries
worldwide. The IDEOS was launched during the 2010
Christmas period with the phone gaining wide acceptance
in the market.
Mr. Herman He from Huawei announced that, “Since
the IDEOS launch five months ago, so far over 60,000
pieces have been sold and we are moving towards the
100,000 piece mark with its share of the local smartphone
market at 45% in the first quarter of the year, making it the
top selling device with February alone reaching 73%.”
“We are delighted by the IDEOs’ outstanding performance
and we hereby affirm our commitment to continue
providing quality and affordable products to Kenyans”.
Mr. He added.
The success has partly been attributed to a strategic
partnership with Safaricom as the main distributor and
marketer of the smart phone, Google for their Android 2.2
platform, and QUALCOMM for the chipsets.
Safaricom Head of Retail Morris Maina said the
partnership was a major win for Kenyan consumers and
presented a strategic fit for Safaricom in its quest to drive
up data uptake by availing affordable internet enabled
devices. The phone retails at a discount on its original
price, and comes with some free Safaricom data and
airtime.
Opening Ceremony of Telefonica-Huawei Service Innovation Center
May 12, 2011 - Telefonica and Huawei established the joint Service Innovation Center (SIC) in Germany, which is
the branch of Telefonica global SIC, with the objective of extending new services and exploring future propositions.
More than 30 people attended this event.
“As a very important strategy partner of Telefonica, Huawei has been very active in application and service
innovation, and has already deployed strategic service platforms for Telefonica around the world.” said Ms. Andrea
Folgueiras, the CTO of Telefonica Germany. “SIC, as a part of strategy cooperation of both companies, is going to
build potential new services on already deployed platforms, where functions/services can be inherited. With the full
support from Huawei and 3rd party partners, we are confident to reduce our time-to-market and to be more flexible for
future service offerings.”
“Telefonica is one of the most important strategy partners of Huawei. We have already deployed SDP and NGIN
service platform together in Telecom software area. With this joint innovation center, we will be able to better understand
Telefonica service strategies and market requirements, also to introduce Huawei’s global successful experience
to Telefonica” said Mr. Guo Haiwei, the VP of Telefonica Key Account, Huawei. “The showcases today are the first
achievement of our joint efforts. They also reveal SIC as an incubation platform for future innovations. It is our
pleasure to take part in the progress of Telefonica service innovation and transformation. I believe that it will be a
win-win business for both companies.”
During the opening ceremony, four showcases over NGIN and SDP platforms were introduced, namely FUN (FMC
Unified Number) service, NTS (Number Translation Service), DSM (Digital Shopping Mall) and Service Innovation
Environment. Innovation experiences of TLATAM and China Mobile were also shared and discussed as future
innovation mode. As a “playground” for all parties on the service innovation chain, the SIC allows “Beta” services to
be provided to end users directly. It is expected to be an important part of Telefonca’s transformation.
Huawei Launches xDSL Cards with Unparalleled Port Density
May 17, 2011 - Huawei today
launched two types of copper
access cards with unparalleled port
density: the 48-port COMBO card
and the 64-port VDSL2 card. These
products will enhance solutions in
public switched telephone network
(PSTN) migration and broadband
access, and will enable operators to
decrease OPEX by reducing room
size by 30 to 50 percent.
Mr. You Yiyong, President of
Huawei’s Access Network Product
Line, said, “Dedicated to our
customers’ demands, Huawei has
never stopped innovating in the
fixed access arena, including copper
access, and strives to help operators
maximize the potential of copper
wires and provide the best products
and solutions to their customers.”
Combining ADSL2+, voice, and
splitter functions in one card, the 48-
port COMBO card significantly
reduces the amount of required
space in telecommunications rooms,
simplifies copper cable routing, and
reduces total power consumption.
The 48-port COMBO card also
assists in integrating traditional
time-division multiplexing (TDM)
voice systems into future-oriented
VoIP systems, while also providing
broadband access. Devices
equipped with the COMBO cards
will not only have a higher degree of
integration but will also be up to 70
percent smaller.
of all global broadband users
with its SingleFAN solution,
providing super broadband access
that enriches people’s communications
and their lives.
Service Leaders
Need Grow Faster
By Daniel Boluda
Director,
Service Sales and Professional Services,
Huawei Iberia
Huawei’s continuous
increase of
the equipment
installed base
has been only
possible thanks to a very clear
strategy based on a customer
centric organization that delivers,
first to market, the most innovative
and convergent technical solutions.
Growing further will only be
possible with more complex
solutions, especially on the services
area. In fact, being a service leader
in Huawei means that you need to
grow faster, much faster actually,
than the average growth of the
company. This is the reason for
which my 5 years in Huawei Service
Department have been, doubtless,
the most exciting and exhausting
experience in my professional life.
When I joined in 2006 Huawei
had little business in Spain, with a
Tier 2 operator and the service
organization had less than 20
people. Today we have complex
projects with all major telecom
operators, and almost 500 service
staffs. We have developed services
from all business units including
Managed Services (with the first
outsourcing contract of Huawei
Europe), Network Technology
Services and System Integration.
I want to share with you a story
about the growth and development
of our professional services team in
Spain, a story full of challenges,
difficulties, rewards and
gratefulness.
Talking about services,
Huawei is not ranking the
same among its competitors
and, therefore, the growth
compared to the network and
device divisions needs to be
quicker.
6 HUAWEI PEOPLE

STORIES OF HUAWEI PEOPLE
only through hard working but
understanding of company process.
By doing so, Huawei Spain service
organization grew as any other
competitor would have done in more
than 2 years’ time. The growth of
people and capabilities enabled us
to face complex radio swap project
in a very aggressive timeline.
This project helped me to win the Excellent Staff award of European Region in 2007.
2006 - Realizing how fast
Huawei was growing
I joined Huawei almost by
accident. During 9 months I had
different interviews and my recruitment
process was cancelled couple
of times. Eventually I started in
Huawei as a Radio Engineer since
there were no other positions left. I
accepted this position with the clear
purpose to move to another position
in a short term if we won a contract
in which I could bring more values.
In less than 3 months Huawei
Spain won the first big project, a 3G
network swap for Vodafone. Due to
my prior experience I was appointed
O&M Manager in charge of the
delivery of the professional
services. This was a very challenging
project, not only because of the
service delivery capabilities of
Huawei Spain at that time, but also
because of the complexity of the
services to be delivered. I would like
to remind you that, at that time, all
professional services were called
“maintenance services”.
The first time I noticed how fast
Huawei should grow on the service
domain was in this project. The most
shocking thing to me was Huawei’s
so different approach: with much
less people, less skills, less process,
less platform and less customer
relationship, we managed to deploy
a bigger 3G network two times faster
than our competitor, at much less
cost and with higher quality.
The reason for the success was a
very close work to customer. We
worked in all the customer’s
regional premises as a part of the
same O&M team, something that
looked not efficient in the short
term. I remember how I should
justify the presence of an O&M
regional team to our leaders every
6 months. Today nobody doubts
that this team is a core value in
Vodafone account.
This success was possible not
2007 – Wading into service
bidding
After a very successful delivery
experience in Vodafone project I had
the opportunity to lead Telefonica
FTTH professional services, a
project with very challenging
maintenance KPIs. We started the
delivery of O&M services on site in
mid 2007. Our customer was not
happy with the incumbent vendor’s
KPI figures and set up a very close
follow-up on our O&M figures from
number of equipment failures to
hardware repairs. We reached the
target faster than any other competitor
ever, and the reason for this
success was once more a very close
approach to the customer in their
premises, listening to their real pains
and solving their problems.
As part of our strategic relationship
with Telefonica I helped to start
up Málaga TAC, a technical support
center that would support Spanish
speaking customers. I was appointed
to be a service speaker in the
opening ceremony introducing the
purpose, process and future plan of
Malaga TAC center, and had the
chance to meet and shake hands to
many executives including Mr. Ren
Zhengfei and César Alierta (President
of Telefonica Group). That was a very
challenging experience from which I
learned a lot.
In those days I had to lead, at the
same time, the technical support for
Jazztel (our first customer in Spain),
HUAWEI PEOPLE 7

(Top) With GTS leaders at Malaga TAC
(Bottom) In my case, the excellent relationship
I have now with those customers
is a result of a good delivery performed
and a perfect team building time in China.
the delivery of Vodafone O&M
project and the quotation of several
service opportunities in Vodafone
ending up in my first maintenance
contract proposals for both
Vodafone and Telefonica. Lack of
processes in service pricing at that
time were another difficulty. Since
my background was not pre-sales it
took me some time to understand
what was important in a service
quotation facing procurement
departments of our customers. In a
few months I had learned the basics
of contract negotiation principles
and then participated in a contract
negotiation for a multivendor spares
project, which helped me a lot in
improving my negotiation skills.
In the coming months I would be
required to support more and more
bidding activities answering service
related parts. The service sales team
in Spain had depended on EU and
HQ bidding specialists because of
its staffing but step by step we
improved our capabilities. In 2008
we faced independently PTN tender
with Vodafone and won the project,
the first project won by an entirelylocal
service bidding team. However
this bidding was still bound to
product.
2008 – A mile stone in
service business development
In September 2008 I was promoted
to lead Account Service
department in Spain. A new organization
built for empowering the
service sales. We brought in new
roles such as account service
managers and service solutions
managers working out more proactive
proposals rather than answering
tenders bound to products. That
marked a milestone in our service
business development in Spain.
In Oct. 2008 I had the chance to
fly together with customers to
Huawei headquarters, an experience
that everybody in this company
should have.
STORIES OF HUAWEI PEOPLE
2009 – Acquiring MS
contract and HR asset
At the beginning of 2009 I was
deeply involved in the first wireless
network maintenance contract
negotiation with Vodafone. After
months of hard negotiations the
two parties signed an out-ofwarranty
agreement at global
level. This was a new achievement
in Huawei Service Sales team for it
was the first time this operator
issued a PO related to maintenance
services, something almost impossible
given Huawei’s global agreement
signed with Vodafone. Nowadays
we have improved this contract
adding more product lines and
extending the duration. This
contract awarded our team with the
Best Service Sales Development
annual award in Vodafone Business
Unit.
Doubtless, the knowledge and
background of our senior executives
in the service domain is another key
for a successful growth of the
service business. At the beginning
of 2009, Huawei Spain CEO and GTS
director had the first managed
services approach to Jazztel’s CEO.
Huawei Spain had a big market share
in Jazztel network and Jazztel was
looking for a way to increase their
subscriber base with a new network
evolution project linked to a financial
solution. Huawei Service and
Product sales teams worked together
with finance department for 7
months and offered Jazztel a
solution which enabled them to live
a heavy growth.
My role in this project was to
lead the service solutions team and
service contract negotiation with
people from different areas and
countries. Fortunately I counted on
the help of WEU Service Sales Vice
President (Adriana Boersma) in the
solution and the contract negotiation
phases. Local VPs in Europe
have demonstrated to be a key
factor for the successful and quick
development of the service business
in European region.
On 10th November 2009 the first
outsourcing MS project of Huawei
Europe was signed in Madrid. A 5
years agreement which included
NOC (front office and back office),
FLM and logistics & spare parts
managed services. This project and
the main players received Huawei
Gold Medal Award.
After the signature of the MS
contract, I acted as the project
manager before a suitable MS leader
was found for the project. The MS
delivery experience made me learn
deeply what managed services were,
something needed to do the right
MS development and sales.
The first challenge was people
transfer. Thanks to a very close
approach from our HR and MS
teams with customer executives and
transferred personnel we faced a
people transfer process with neither
issues nor leaves. Later on we
would have to face transformation
and profit improvement of the
project, something that we managed
to create additional opportunities
upon the MS contract.
When we acquired Jazztel people
we acquired a valuable human asset
with the expertise to operate and
maintain an end to end fix line
network. These people have helped
significantly Spain Professional
Services Department in delivering
more complex projects and support
service solutions in a way not
This project made the big
difference for our
maturity in service
solutions capabilities.
HUAWEI PEOPLE 9

possible before the transfer.
2010 – New stance of
professional service team
During first half of 2010 we bid
another MS project with ONO, the
major cable operator in Spain, in a
very similar approach. Thanks to our
experience in Jazztel project and
strong local service solutions team,
we managed this opportunity in a
simpler and more efficient way. This
contract was signed on July 15 th , a
project with 40 staffs transfer and
end to end responsibility in a core
TDM network which will be
swapped by Huawei. Here we faced
new challenges: engineering,
planning, technology, and homologation
responsibilities, tasks very
much related to the operator’s
network evolution strategy. This
project demonstrated that Huawei
Spain solutions team is able to face
independently almost any kind of
MS sales project.
This increasing race of project
complexity reached the top in
summer 2010 when Huawei Spain
was awarded with three projects as a
Prime Contractor by Orange Spain.
Professional Services team had to
face the design of a multi-vendor
transmission network able to
accommodate a huge and fast swap
of RAN (2G/3G), DWDM and IP
Core networks. This is, once more, a
step in the way to perform our
operators’ work, but now, on the
Engineering and Planning domain.
These three projects required to
build a very strong NTS team.
At the end of 2010, the capabilities
of Professional Services
Department in Spain have reached a
point comparable to a middle size
telecom operator. We have now our
own FLM, NOC, O&M,
Provisioning, Engineering and
Planning teams. As for the service
sales solutions area, we have
service sales managers for key
Business Units: CS, MS, SI and
NTS thanks to what our service
pipeline is among the most healthy
in the European region and we are
able to target almost any kind of
business in the service area.
Furthermore, Professional
Services delivery organization is
now very strong. We count on a big
managed services, customer
support services, network technology
services and system integration
teams consolidating a structure
very close to the Operations
Department of a Tier 1 operator
including the construction of a
NOC which will come to live
operation on Q2 2011.
2011 – New profitable
business: multivendor
contract
This year 2011 we have started
with the signature of the first
multivendor contract in Europe,
another relevant reference case.
This project has been a pure service
project over a multivendor network
with the total development of the
local service team and no single
Huawei equipment involved. We
have managed to be fully independent
of our product sales division
generating a profitable business
which makes worth to invest in pure
service solutions. We negotiated
with our competitors and other
service companies in a record time
in order to start providing this
service on Jan 1 st 2011.
We have demonstrated that the
solutions are rather more complex
than pure boxes with I&C and
maintenance services. We have
changed from a company whose
growth only rely on equipments to
a solutions company able to
breakthrough a key account
through pure services, like we will
probably do in Spain this year.
However, we need constant
challenges and difficult projects in
order to grow the competence of a
service organization. Actually we
need to go beyond. New models for
service companies, revenue
distribution, network sharing, cloud
services need to be seriously
analyzed in order to create the new
opportunities that will place Huawei
at the top of the telecom market. We
still face the challenge to build
centralized competence teams able
to bring efficiency and competitiveness
to the network operation
services delivered to our customers
and being ready to face new
challenges such as managed
services megadeals.
I have grown fast in Huawei and I
want to keep growing with the
company in such a similar way
because this is what we need to do
in services if we want this company
to rank no. 1 in the world. I have the
challenge to run an organization
over 200 people delivering 5 Business
Units services for all key
accounts and developing the
service sales and solutions. I’m a
professional services director in
charge of profit and loss, customers
and partners, sales and delivery. I
must always find the balance to
make the company grow in the
expectations of the customer but
protecting Huawei’s interests and
culture.
I’m a privileged person who
counts on an excellent team. A team
which has worked too hard scarifying
many nights and holidays but
always overachieving the challenging
targets and becoming a reference
for other countries.
I wish that some of you had the
chance to live the same exciting
experience than me.
“Core Value Mug”
As a part of Go Green drive to save environment, Huawei India recently decided to discard all paper cups used in
the office. This prompted some employees to get a unique idea of getting their own Mug designed in a way that each
individual can relate itself to Huawei Vision & Core Values.
After brainstorming by three employees of MS Department (Kamal Kapoor, Rakesh Panwar and Puneet Goyal) a
“On October 1, 2010 the CJSC
and smiled – they forgot to
add: “… WiMAX Mobile network
In Pursuit of Excellence
Be A Multidirectional Engineer
By Evgeny Holzapfel (Tajikistan Rep. Office)
On acceptance tests in Pamir region with
the Customer engineer
The way was found
In March 2008 I joined Huawei
Tajikistan and became a Data Communication
engineer in Network
Department. I was involved in several
projects as network engineer and
acquired fundamentals of responsibilities
of a HUAWEI engineer. In
June 2009 our office underwent a
change of organization and I was
moved to Wireless Department as
CDMA & WiMAX BSS engineer. To
pass the probation I must upgrade by
myself a CDMA BSC that is running
in the network. My experience as
network engineer gave me a foundation
but my tutor, Mr. Almaz Ergeshov
from Kyrgyzstan, taught me excellent
lessons and with his mentoring I
successfully did the upgrade by
myself.
The first challenging
mission
Till 2008 the Internet Penetration
rate remained at about 4% in
Tajikistan. In a mountainous country
deploying fixed networks was really
difficult and WiMAX became one of
the priority solutions for telecom
STORIES OF HUAWEI PEOPLE
operators.
The WiMAX project for Babilon-
T was a key project for both Huawei
and the customer. When I arrived at
the project team the first batch of
equipment had been installed in the
capital city of Dushanbe, but the
customer had planned to upgrade
the WiMAX network and expand it
to two other cities, Khujand and
Kurgan-Tube.
We had a team comprised of
engineers from local office and HQ,
including Mr. Leehongguang and
Ms. Tianhe, from whom I got useful
experience and exact management
skills. It was my first major task, and
my chance to show my abilities,
knowledge and skills in the
implementation. When the NRO and
supporting engineers left I met face
to face with the whole network, and
the strict customer very particular
about network performance.
The hardware installations and
software upgrades were commissioned
in May 2010, but based on
customer requirements the coverage
and radio optimization weren’t
satisfying. A Radio Network Optimization
specialist – Mr. Jiangbo was
sent from the HQ. On the first day
when we met I realized that working
with him would be an honor. On the
meetings, drive tests, on the way to
customer’s office – everywhere – he
taught me and shared with me his
professional experience. The
customer asked Mr. Jiang a heavy
shower of questions about WiMAX
technology and Huawei solutions,
and was amazed by Mr. Jiang’s
competence and skills.
Witnessing customer’s
success
The whole network was optimized
in August, 2010. Engineers from
both the customer and Huawei
started thorough tests over different
CPEs and modems for various
services through Babilon-T’s
WiMAX network. The test team
enjoyed WiMAX technology with
great pleasure, and the customer did
more tests by themselves till the end
of September, 2010, while their
marketing guys were preparing
advertisement for the launch of the
new service. People in the three
cities were talking about Mobile
WiMAX, excitedly, could not wait to
experience the new service, and the
chance became true on the commercial
launch on October 1, 2010. In
the first day of the launch of new
services, BM652, HUAWEI CPE
model with SIP interface for NGN
service became the most famous
among the consumers.
This was one of the first WiMAX
projects in CIS region. In 2010, after
2.5 years network expansion the
Internet Penetration rate of the
country reached around 10%. Now
the Babilon-T WiMAX network is a
highly popular and desirable service
network. It has about 2,000
subscribers, a good result for the
customer.
Contributing to teamwork
Starting from July 2010 I got
involved in GSM/UMTS BSS
business and took part in projects
as supervisor for preliminary
acceptance tests of 2G/3G BSS. My
working day may start from troubleshooting
WiMAX network and
finish on-site doing PAT for GSM
BTS. In this period I improved my
skills and knowledge, and my job
level was upgraded in Q1, 2011.
There are about 50 employees
working in HUAWEI Tajikistan
and we enjoy same opportunities at
work, to improve and to realize our
potentials. We have a lot of meetings
with different people and
sometimes my colleagues may
Evgeny and his wife Irina
make mistakes or happen to be in a
bad mood. As A. Lincoln said “It
has been my experience that folks
who have no vices have very few
virtues”, I also believe that everybody
has vices and makes mistakes.
But our office team, Technical
Support, Wireless – we are always
friends and one team. Gaining
skills at work, trying to focus on
customer requirements, getting
pleasure of work, it’s good to work
with our team in this multinational
company.
I want to designate the persons
who help me in all aspects of my
work and I sincerely thank Mr. Sun
Hongwei and Mr. Farkhod Choriev.
I’m married and my wife Irina is a
professional journalist. Actually Irina
helped me wrote this article. Thanks
to her.
Lebanon, with so much turbulent
Winning 3G Nationwide network deployment contract – (Feb, 2011)
The day finally arrived in September 2010 when Huawei
participated in bidding and competed with its competitors to
gain market share in 3G roll out. In February 2011 Huawei was
declared a sole vendor and was given the end to end 3G
nationwide roll out for MTC-Touch, largest mobile operator in
Lebanon Telecom Market. It’s a great joy to share, a great
achievement by HQ, regional and local office sales and marketing
team. As part of my role to support pre and post sales, I
visited the customer again in March 2011. This time, when I
arrived in Lebanon, I felt Telecom infrastructure providers’
landscape was changed and the customer was looking much
more satisfied and developed confidence in Huawei products
and solutions. I was to deliver presentations on how to achieve
3G business success to executives from the Ministry of
Telecom, Telecom Regulator and MTC-Touch and interestingly,
it was again highly appreciated by all the customers and front
office and paved the way to future business success in
Lebanon. To date, such initiatives and workshops by local
office has recently opened a lot of opportunity doors to both
Huawei as well as key players in Lebanon telecom market and
key decision makers have started working on new business
dimensions introduced by me.
I see a huge potential for the development of telecom and
information technologies in Lebanon in coming years. We are
looking forward to enable the Lebanon telecom sector with
Huawei solutions to deliver services, and for various entrepreneurs
and companies to provide services and applications that
will not only increase the penetration and usage of Information
and Communication Technologies but also reflect the spread of
education, provision of healthcare solutions and the improvement
in security with the help of electronic communications,
therefore strengthening economic environment in Lebanon.
Dear Atif,
Your article is reflecting the success of
Huawei in Lebanon. Huawei started in
Lebanon officially in 2008, and in 2010-2011,
Huawei secured a great deal to deploy 3G in
one of the two operators in Lebanon. This
achievement is the result of hard efforts being
set during the last 3-4 years, from all levels.
Thank you for this insight about Lebanon
and its telecom market which has always
been perceived to be very special and incomparable
to the other markets in the region
and even worldwide. As I learned in life,
business success is the result of hard work
and perseverance, especially when competing
with the major players in telecom field.
I would like to forward my appreciation to
the local team who made it happen, Leo
Hong, Wu Ming, Samer Wattar, Rola Hasna,
Tarek Abdel Satter, Rony Nassrallah, Wang
Jian and all, all the others in the local office,
region and Headquarters.
I believe that we have still more to do when
it comes to the accomplishment of our commitment
and towards the new challenges with
Alfa’s backbone and MoT’s FTTx opportunities
coming very soon. We use to call it for low
STORIES OF HUAWEI PEOPLE
Helen’s Experience Sharing
By Chin Hui Lan (TSD, Brunei)
Ijoined Huawei in Nov 2005, being one of the
lucky ones that were recruited to the technical
support team for Huawei’s first overseas NGN
commercial network which was deployed in
Brunei Darussalam. I was appointed as a
leader of the maintenance and services delivery team in
early 2009, striving to achieve goals and completing the
assignments given to me.
In April 2010, the management recognized my efforts
and achievements and nominated me for the position of
Maintenance Manager. It was my honor. My new role
includes leading and managing Brunei customers’
account maintenance services and delivery. Taking the
new role I felt great pressure at beginning because I had
to meet all the KPIs and face prior to customer
satisfaction, team cooperation, knowledge and information
sharing, continuous criterion and workflow
practice, with the target to achieve zero human errors as
my major responsibilities in order for smooth services
delivery.
Without much of management skills at that time, the
attentive guidance by my supervisor - Mr. Zhang
Wingwen and Qian Hongtao were of importance to me,
together with the continuous support from all other
related departments and colleagues. Taking the
initiative, I enforced myself to learn and adapt to the
changes to achieve further. Not forgetting the contribution
and cooperation from all my team members that
drive me and my career to the next level, I sincerely
thank every one of them who are part or one of us in
achieving this.
Working in Huawei I play one of the most challenging
roles that I have ever come across. A good performer
should possess the ability to adapt, accepting new ideas
and to deliver deliberate decisions. Effective communication
is also one of the key points towards cooperation
from all departments regardless of classes, cultures,
races and nationality. It also involves the challenges to
improve and achieve each and every target that has
been set one after another regardless for work commitments
or self-developments.
The next one would be to commit to what you are
delegated with which require individual to take the full
responsibilities, selflessly contributing and get ready to
sacrifice part of your personal times and energy to
achieve our business goals. In addition, to be patient
and optimistic when problems arise, manage stress, work
out resolution and eliminate the barriers that prevent
you from moving forward and getting things done
according to the plan. Last but not least, to have good
working attitude and enthusiasm on task and assignments
that allows you to wheel steering as you go along
further to get things running and keep on the right track.
Taking the opportunity and challenges to work in
Huawei is all about the willingness to explore and to
excavate from one area to another. The more you explore
and excavate the more you can strengthen your skills.
I am looking forward to taking the upcoming challenges
to improve and achieve further.
Grow with Huawei
My “Fresher” Experience in Huawei
By Debojit Bhadra (UAP Platform DC, HTIPL, India)
It’s like getting gifts suddenly
in hands, when I got the news
that I have been selected by
HUAWEI. I shouted and
jumped like anything, knowing
that I had been selected by one of the
biggest companies in Telecom Industries.
They sent me the Joining letter, and
mentioned that I had to report on 2 nd
August 2010 at Leela Palace in Bangalore.
I was so excited, first job in my life, but I
was a bit scared of joining as I didn’t
know the environment or how it would be
for me as I knew only engineering
boundaries so far. But anyway I had to
join because I would not spare this
opportunity of being a member of
Telecom Industry. I am from electronics
background and always thought of
positioning myself in Telecom like core
industry.
I came to Bangalore one day earlier.
And then on 2 nd August, early in the
morning I set out from my PG and reported
to Leela Palace. The first day,
wow, shirt, tie and black shoes fully
polished. Two HR people were there
waiting for us and guided us where to go.
STORIES OF HUAWEI PEOPLE
On 7 th floor we had our induction
session. We introduced ourselves
and I was eager to know what work I
would be doing and what an
organization I would be in, what
rules to be followed… In one week’s
time I was like in a new world guided
by some DOs and DON’Ts which
mostly had been discussed in the
induction process.
Then on a fine Monday the HR
told us that we would be distributed
among several teams. I had been
asked to join PLATFORM DC and in
that I would be working in UAP
team. From the name of the DC I
thought that I would be working in
some interface environment. I had
been asked to report to Reporting
Manager. Next day I came to office
and after roaming some places to
identify the location I found my
team. I reported to my manager and
received a super welcome from her.
One of my team members introduced
me along with others. I was very
nervous as those people were very
new to me and everyone was very
busy. I was told that here people in
the office would call each other by
his/her name, and that I should not
have hesitated to do so. It was just a
custom of the company.
Almost 9 months have passed
since that first day to work. Now I
am working in UAP and enjoying my
working here too: people are very
friendly. Frankly speaking as I am
staying far away from my family, my
teammates in HTIPL have become
my only family members in this city.
I won’t lie. I really find myself happy
day in day out interacting with them.
I had never thought it could be like
that. Here I can share any of my
problems with others and they are
very close to me. No matter how
tough the situation is they would
always try to make it easy for me.
Some people may feel weird as I
said that I felt as if my team members
were my family members. But for me
it is real truth and my own feeling
actually. Like here even if people are
busy we try to isolate some time to
make ourselves feel free. For me as a
fresher this approach is a big gift
because I can share my thoughts,
whatever it may be, with such good
team mates and listen to their
advice. The most amazing thing is
that age boundary does not work
here. Seniors are so friendly that
sometimes I will forget that I had
joined as a fresher because they
make me feel that they have known
me from along past. When someone
in the team moves to another
organization we can feel the bonding
and see how much close people
has become within our UAP team.
In the 9 months things I got to
learn are excellent, and in the 9
months the way I have been trained
is unique. Especially team building
is one of the best practices that I
have ever gone through. It is more
like helping fresher for getting
accustomed with team mates.
Finishing this article I would say I
have wonderful experience here and
it is always a pleasure for me to work
in HUAWEI HTIPL. I feel great
being part of this company, and the
telecom industry.
Huawei Celebrates 10 Years in the United States
By Susan Dianto (Marketing Communications, Huawei USA)
On April 5, Huawei marked its 10-year anniversary in
the United States. In recognition of this corporate
milestone, we hosted a formal celebration at our new
research and development (R&D) headquarters in Santa
Clara, California. The event featured three key elements:
10-year celebration/ribbon cutting ceremony, a facility
tour and a luncheon.
We hosted state and local officials, as well as
customers, partners, industry leaders and media representatives
on site. Government officials who attended the
event included former US Congressman Rich Baucher, the
Mayors of Santa Clara, Cupertino and Campbell, CA, and
several members of the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce.
Customer participants included Eric Steinmann of
ClearTalk; Craig Cuffie of Clearwire; Colin Holland and Bill
Ingram of Leap Wireless; and Bob Parsloe of Northeast
Wireless.
This event was another great success following the
recent ribbon cutting events in Ottawa, Plano, and
Toronto, another major achievement in consistently
promoting Huawei’s brand image in North America as
a customer-centric innovator, a local economy
contributor, a global telecom leader, and a true local
global company.
The event could not have succeeded without the
tremendous support of the entire project team. A very
iTools, A Great Helper
By Terence Tu (BP&IT, China)
3G + iAccess connected us to company intranet
In January and early February some political
conflicts occurred in Egypt and the internet
connection of our office premises in Cairo was
interrupted.
This episode shows how our BP&IT staff
figured out an emergency solution to ensure network
connection in the office. This also serves an experience
sharing for similar situations where we need to ensure
smooth running of business...
On February 6 our office in HSBC building reopened
but we were told the network had been destroyed in a
local exchange. Without Internet it would be impossible
form many of our staff to do their job. We really need an
access to the company intranet.
While communicating with local network operator we
worked out an emergency solution combining the 3G +
WLAN + iAccess. On February 7 we deployed eight 3G
access points in the office to connect the 3G network,
and use iAccess to connect the company intranet
through the internet. The solution worked well and
provided normal access for almost 200 people.
We tested on site and found that the uplink rate
achieved 256-512Kbps in one 3G access point, and the
downlink rate was 1Mbps-3Mbps. Someone from the
regional president’s office said, “This is cool! I only
used iAccess at home, never expected to use it in the
office!” Another guy from NRO department was very
joyful: “the speed is good! I can update information in
iSite!”
The next day the access rate dropped down because
more employees returned to the office. We added new
access points and the speed resumed to a good level.
This solution combining 3G, WLAN and iAccess
effectively supported office daily requirements for one
week till the network service was resumed. The experience
tells us that in case of emergency our IT support
engineers can actually do something to set up network
environment in the office and provide some kind of
communication means to our staff.
• When employees cannot go to the office and must
work at home, they can use iAccess to connect the
company intranet.
• If the office network is unusable, we can set up an
emergency network at office using 3G+WLAN for
internet access. We can also use iAccess to connect the
company intranet and use eSpace for communication.
• When both the internet and the telecom networks
are disconnected, we can use the satellite terminal in
iTools tool kit to access the internet and send important
mails, and use satellite phone for emergency purpose.
In November 2010 the country’s election triggered a series of events which consequently worsened the situation
in Abidjan of Cote D’Ivoire. At the end of March 2011 the mob started looting of property, most of shopping mall in
Abidjan were looted, gun fires were heard in the city.
During the war, Huawei people still stick to their posts, ensuring 7*24 network monitoring and technical support
by phone and email, daily report of network KPI, troubleshooting by remote access, and on-site troubleshooting.
These photos from Cote d’Ivoire may not be well-taken but they depict some precious moments when our people,
both local and expatriate, were committed to our responsibility even in war time, towards smooth running of the
Huawei Australia –
Corporate Social Responsibility Update
By Luke Coleman (Australia Rep. Office)
2010 was a landmark
year for Huawei
Australia’s contributions
to Corporate
Social Responsibility
initiatives. While the company has
long supported a number of worthy
causes in Australia, 2010 and early
2011 have seen Huawei’s CSR
activities stretch from Australia and
across the company’s New Zealand
and Pacific Islands offices, with
hundreds of people in need reaping
the benefits.
Following the catastrophic
earthquakes which struck New
Zealand in early 2011, Huawei
contributed NZ$250,000 towards
rebuilding and recovery efforts in
Christchurch. Huawei was also onhand
working with operator partners
in New Zealand to ensure that
telecoms networks remained in
operation in the days and weeks
which followed the disaster.
In Australia, Huawei has supported
the Jobs Australia
Foundation’s Indigenous Youth
Leadership Program, an inspiring
course for young Indigenous
Australians to hone their leadership
skills. The Indigenous Youth
Leadership Program centred on a 10-
day trek of the Kokoda Trail – a
historically significant landmark for
Australia in the Second World War.
The program saw seven mentors
and the thirteen young Indigenous
leaders walk the length of the
Kokoda Track with Jobs Australia
Foundation Director and CEO of
Reconciliation Australia, Leah
Armstong. The program also
included a three-day leadership
training program in May 2010, and
finally a three-day post-trek leadership
training program which
concluded with celebrations in
Melbourne’s Albert Park.
The Indigenous Youth Leadership
Program is not just about the
Kokoda Track, but about physical
and mental preparation, and developing
leadership skills. The track
provided the opportunity for
participants to practice new leadership
skills, while the post-trek
program provided the opportunity
to unpack and reflect on what
participants learnt, what they plan to
do in terms of leadership, and how
they will lead and make a difference
in the future.
Huawei also worked on a number
of noteworthy network projects in
the Solomon and Pacific Islands
during 2010, and announced the
creation of a $100,000 CSR fund for
worthy causes across the region.
The first grant from the fund came
on the form of a $10,000 donation to
Mercy Learning Centre, a school for
underprivileged children in the
Solomon Islands. Mercy Learning
Centre has 438 students from
Kindergarten to Form 5, and 15
unpaid, untrained teachers on hand
operating from just one classroom.
Three new classrooms are currently
under construction.
With Mercy Learning Centre,
Huawei will use the funds to pay for:
New chairs and desks to fill three new
classrooms, a new computer, printer,
and photocopier, formal training for
three teachers, two new 1000-gallon
water tanks to provide children with
clean drinking water, and new books
and learning materials for students.
The $100,000 CSR fund also contributed
funding towards The Children’s
Hospital at Westmead and the University
of Sydney, in a $50,000 sponsorship
agreement to develop e-health
applications across the Pacific Islands
region. The Children’s Hospital at
Westmead and the University of
Sydney operate an international
certification program for paediatric
medical practitioners, and with Huawei
the agreement will deliver online
medical training to doctors and
nurses in hard-to-reach areas using
e-health technology.
The CSR partnership with The
Children’s Hospital at Westmead
and the University of Sydney goes
further than just financial support,
with Huawei also contributing its
technological innovation. Huawei
has supplied the S7 mobile tablet to
test the effectiveness of mobile
tablets in delivering e-health
training, and will also work with The
Children’s Hospital at Westmead
and the University of Sydney on
delivering internet-based training
Creating Positive
Change at Huawei
By Brad William Hall
Senior Advisor to President of Human Resource
Over the past
years, many
experienced
professionals
have joined
Huawei. Those who come from
mature, slow-growth companies are
typically excited to join a young,
energetic company. Most join
because they want to apply their
hard-earned expertise to help Huawei
succeed.
I’m one of those people. In my
first week, I met with a senior Huawei
leader and excitedly told him of many
of my best ideas. He listened kindly
then said, “We don’t like big
changes at Huawei.” Since my
profession is change management, I
didn’t know how to react.
Perhaps you have had a similar
experience – your big ideas are not
readily accepted. Maybe you think
that Huawei management is too
proud or that they do not take risks
or that they do not care about
continuous improvement.
After one year at Huawei I have
learned that none of those reasons
is correct. I have also learned that
the executive was right. Cautiously
approaching big changes makes
sense. Here’s what I have learned.
Huawei is humble. Perhaps
Huawei’s greatest strength is its
humility and passion for learning.
Here is one example; executives at
most companies are embarrassed to
use consultants. They feel that if
their skills were acceptable, they
would not need outside help. This
is not true at Huawei. Here, identi-
HUAWEI WORLDWIDE
fying and implementing the best
ideas is more important than
“looking smart.” Every day more
and more top global professionals
are being hired to work at Huawei’s
headquarters to shift world-class
skills from consultants to managers
inside the company.
And it’s not just organizational
improvements. Continual selfimprovement
is also an important
part of Huawei’s culture. Mr. Ren
encourages “self-criticism,” or what
others might call self-reflection. He
tells managers to stop worrying
about “face” and find opportunities
to identify personal weaknesses
and improve.
Huawei is bold. It is impossible
for a company to produce exceptional
growth without being bold.
Huawei’s Vice President of Human
Resources, Jack Lv joined Huawei
when there were only 600
employees. He recalls attending an
all-employee meeting with Mr. Ren
who told the attendees that in the
end there will only be three telecom
equipment makers and Huawei will
be one of them. That’s bold.
Huawei has struggled to survive.
Being bold creates big rewards, but
also produces big risks to Huawei
and more importantly, to customers
who trust us. Several times in its
history Huawei looked like it would
not survive; but hard work and
persistence to the end saved it.
Andy Grove, the founder of Intel
is famous for his book, “Only the
Paranoid Survive.” Mr. Grove
attributes Intel’s success to a daily
concern for survival. Mr. Ren is the
same. He says, “For ten years, I
worry every day about failure and I
turn a blind eye to success … this
might be the reason for Huawei’s
survival.” He also said, “The basis
for our survival is to constantly
enhance our core competencies.” If
we cannot continually improve, we
will die.
Huawei’s has a competitive cost
advantage. A primary source of
Huawei’s competitive advantage has
been “value” – good quality at a
good price. Maintaining this
advantage takes great effort – we
must improve faster than our
competitors.
Over the past decade, Huawei’s
executive team has been systematically
improving the company’s cost
advantage by streamlining and
automating its business processes.
Each process (e.g., IDP, ISC, IFS)
has been chosen sequentially and
carefully aligned with other processes
into a network that works
seamlessly together. This network
has become a carefully balanced
ecosystem. And just like a natural
ecosystem, making changes in any
part has positive and negative
consequences on the entire system
— the bigger the changes, the
bigger the consequences.
Making Positive Changes at Huawei
Given this environment, here’s
what I’ve learned about making
change. First, carefully learn
standard processes and procedures.
Also, learn the reason for the
policies and procedures. What at
first seems crazy is usually very
logical once you learn the
background. Or, maybe it was
logical given a different set of
assumptions, but rarely is it crazy.
Next, I have learned the importance
of working together with
people most affected by the
changes to jointly create a compelling
argument of how performance
can be improved. These new
partners often know how to make
the changes fit into the existing
ecosystem. The most effective
proposals adjust current policies/
processes to produce more value.
Let’s be honest, proposing and
implementing big changes are fun.
Take the hill and plant your flag at
the top for all to see. But at Huawei,
that is not the way to create successful
change or to advance
personally.
Huawei needs our best thinking
and proactive efforts to survive.
We need to be thoughtful in our
approach and practice good
influence skills. Let’s make sure
that our suggestions are wise; and
have patience. Some of our
competitors have had more than
100 years to improve their
operations.
As Mr. Ren wrote in last year’s
article on Huidu, “We know where
we are going, but the way to get
there may not be the way we
expect. During our journey we may
follow curves and even go in
circles, but when viewed from some
distance we are still heading in the
right direction.”
Relationship maintenance is quite important for the success of the business or
one person. In a Chinese saying: one depends on parents inside the house while
has to depend on friends outside the house. The author quite knows this well; some managers think they
have high authority and there is no need to carry out the outdoor activities to maintain the work
relationship, which means that all of his subordinates are his slaves. I hope all of these managers should
Love
There I Got My Role Model
By Shweta.V (HTIPL, Bangalore)
It’s approximately between the age
group of 8-15 that you are frequently
cornered with the question of role
models. And the answers turn out to
be the expected string of celebrated
sport starts, film stars, writers and even
politicians.
Essentially how do you figure out role
models? What is it about them that force you to
tailor your life on their lines? It all starts with a
silent admiration of their achievements, an
envious longing to copy them and eventually it
develops into something inspiring.
My source of Inspiration is my mother, from
whom I learnt a lot about life. She is educated,
financially independent and possesses a great
presence of mind. I wish to possess such
qualities myself. I would like to live in this world
of fantasy with loads of fun, entertainment and
smile always.
The lessons from my parents are invaluable
especially the moral and spiritual values imbibed
in me. Yet they gave me the freedom to live life
on my own terms and conditions for which I am
eternally grateful to them. And yes, I think some
of their sense of compassion has rubbed off on
me, for even I wish to spare a lot of time with
them and contribute as much as I can spare to
make life better for them.
I have learnt a lot from my mother, particularly
how to be liable for my actions and think
about family. Things she did demanded attention
threefold at home as I had my twin sister
and my elder one crying for sibling rivalry. I
remember when I and my twin sister were
babies: we were completely contrasted to each
other. As a baby if she slept in the night, I slept
in the morning that kept my mother awake
almost day and night. And with my elder sister
at home, and her duties towards home, in-laws
and ultimately at work, I wonder where she got
the perseverance from? I was also aware of the
fact that my parents have sacrificed a lot of comforts just to
see me comfortable.
For the past 27 years, my mother has held the same job and
still at her best, waking up at 4 in the morning without a
smallest complaint. Even though at young age, I still feel lazy
to wake up each morning with no responsibilities, I think, it
takes a lot to have a balancing act in your life. She has taught
me so much about working hard and enjoying life.
It was my parents who kept great trust and confidence in
me and encouraged me to do what I like and how I like. I learnt
with perseverance and hard work, there is almost nothing that
you cannot achieve.
The greatest example I have learned from my parents, time
makes everything better, even when I had the most awful
experiences, I know with my parents by my side, things will
always get better. I intend to work hard to achieve the greater
heights my parents could have ever dreamt of and would like
to be termed as an achiever.
Well, live with full of hope and cheer and with my mother as
an inspiration who is always as the saying goes,
A push when I am stopped,
A guide when I am searching,
A smile when I am sad,
A song when I am feeling gloomy,
A word when I am lonely
I can already see success slowly walking in my direction :)
Team Building
Huawei Team Rows to Victory
By Susan Dianto (USA)
Huawei employees from the Plano, Texas office
teamed up on May 15 to race in the DFW Dragon Boat
Festival, an annual spring event celebrating Asian
American Heritage Month. Over 10,000 visitors gathered
to watch 40 Dragon Boat teams compete – and to
see the Huawei team win first place in the Corporate
Division!
Dragon Boat racing is a main attraction of the Dragon
Boat festival, and a fantastic team-building sport. It
originated in China over 2,000 years ago to commemorate
the great hero and patriot, Qu Yuan. According to
legend, the local fishermen raced out in their boats to
try to save him from drowning in the Mei Lo River.
Today, Dragon Boat racing is one of the fastestgrowing
water sports around, with festivals held in
Asia, Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States.
Modern-day Dragon Boats carry 20 paddlers, weigh
approximately 500 pounds (226 kilograms), and race
other boats in a 250-meter sprint.
Huawei has sponsored and raced in this unique
event since 2009. Although we’ve competed fiercely
each time, this year brought our first big win – with an
amazing race time of just one minute 15 seconds! This
impressive victory was made possible by the outstanding
team effort of Huawei rowers across many
departments, including Sales, Marketing, IT, TSD,
Terminals, Administration and R&D.
“Everyone on the team displayed a ‘can-do’
mentality, which helped give us the winning edge,” said
The dragon dance
rower Frank Leyva, a lab technician in Huawei’s Technical
Services Department.
For Terah Atha, who works in Administration as an
Executive Assistant, this was her first teambuilding
experience with Huawei. “We rowed shoulder to
shoulder, we worked as one and strove to reach our goal,
and we all believed in each other… Huawei has an
amazing team in and out of the water,” she said.
In addition to dragon boat racing, the festival featured
colorful kite flying, cultural performances, a lantern
festival, plus traditional Asian food, arts and crafts. A
great time was had by all Huawei employees, family and
friends. We look forward to participating again next year!
- A Huawei Brunei Team Building Initiative
Huawei Brunei has successfully organized one day Team Building for their staff on 21 st May
2011, with the morning indoor session and outdoor in the afternoon at Taman Tasik in
Bandar Seri Begawan. A total of 21 staff attended the Team Building which was divided in
two parts and both lasted for 4.5 hours.
Indoor involves participation of members in activities, understanding of importance of
team and strengthening “guan xi” and how to support members during the hard time. Ultimately, participants
HUAWEI COMMUNITY
realized the importance of “getting to
know” process in understanding
members well enough and sharing
common interest that leads to better
unity among team members.
The outdoor activities involves
more interactive activities including
members blind-folded and wrapping
gifts with the instructions given by
team leader. The other game is about
building chair using blocks which
requires full cooperation of team
members.
The session ended with prize
giving for the winners and opinion
sharing by the participants and a
delicious lunch at a local restaurant.
Comments by the participants
The team building activities were an inspiring way of learning, we not
only had fun but it also motivates all staff members making the inactive
ones active. Active communication helps individual to identify and
understand one’s capabilities and weakness and the needs for
improvement. Can we have more in the future please?
- Chin Hui Lan
The team building is not only fun but also had improved the relationship
among the staffs. I believe all the members agreed with me that this
team building had provided us powerful team experiences which enable us
from all level to work as true team players and encourage for effective
communication. We should always remember that effective communication
is the key to team’s success.
- Jessie Lim Siaw Yun
I think team building, the training we had in Tasek, has taught me that
when you work with a team, it is important to get to know each other, and
discover the common among each other. It is easier to work together when
you know each other better, and work things out more efficiently. This
should not only practice during training, also any other ordinary day.
- Herman Wong Sing Ping
The team building has taught me to keep my eyes and ears open, and to
never be afraid to ask for guidance. Furthermore, now we know each
member’s personality and commitments, and have adopted a “we’re all in
this together” attitude. Thumbs up!
- Mohd Azizi bin Poat Kamal
Throughout the team building and related training, I was pretty
inspired by Huawei’s core values, as I believe those are in line with the
philosophies that we have been taught and holding on to, but sometimes
may fail to uplift them: to be a righteous person, live our life to the maximum
with our potential, and delight in it with our team members
I am looking forward to seeing in the near future, in this exciting
company, improvement of my knowledge, skills, as well as my character.
