The Curnick family
The earliest reference to the Curnick family in the Wilts Record Office is in the
yea r 1629 when Samuel Curnocke married Margaret Summers and in 1647 when
Grate Curnocke (possibly their daughter) married Hugh Niall. It seems probable that
they were Flemish immigrants connected with the wool trade. There are references to
marriages of Curnicks in 173"!, 1733 and 1751 at Seend, near Melksham and I think
these were almost certainly relatives of later Curnicks.
Robert and William Curnick were brothers - Robert was born in 1792 and William in
1800. I do not know their parents' names or addresses or whether they had brothers
and sisters.
Robert Curnick married Anne about 1820 and had 6 children - William, John, Thomas,
Sarah, Frances and Jane. In 1840 Robert was living at New Farm, Lacock. He died
on 23rd September 1851 in the parish of Melksham. To his wife he left the rents and
rates from various dwellinghouses in Melksham. To his eldest son William he left
farming stock and implements.
To his second son, John he left the rents on all other real estates.
To his third son, Thomas, Yeoman, he left Beanacre Manor Farm and all effects.
To his daughters £1,000 each. In addition to his daughter Sarah his silver teapot
marked ST and also his tea urn. To his daughter Jane he left New Farm, Lacock,
He entru sted his brother William Curnick of Hungerford and Robert Hulbert of
Thingley, Corsham to act on his behalf to preserve his estates from destruction
during the life of his sons and daughters.
He left all farming stock, household furniture, monies and securities for money to
William Curnick the elder and Robert Hulbert situate at Sleight in the parish of
Potterne, Wilts.
Robert's daughter, Sarah, did not marry and died in 1880 aged 50 leaving under £1,500.
Thomas Curnick died 17th June » 1887 . He had moved from Beanacre Manor House to
Standen Farm, Hungerford about 1880 with his wife and sons William and Frederick
and presumably his unmarried daughters. He left about £3,000.
William Curnick died 1889. He used to live at Manor Farm, Stert, Wilts but moved
to Manor Farm, Little Hinton, Berks. He left about £1,000.
John Curnick died 1866 at Netherstreet, Bromham, Wilts leaving about £2,500 to his
wife and 2 sons.
Hannah Sophia Curnick. widow of Thomas, died in 1899 and, finally, William Curnick.
eldest son of Thomas died in 1901 at Polesdon Farm, Hungerford.
William Curnick married tarn about 1835 and had 5 children - Jane, Mary, Sarah, John,
Annie. He died in 1870 aged 70 at Sanham &reen Farm, Hungerford,
In his will he
left to his wife all goods and chattels and freehold farm lands for her natural life.
He left his daughter Jane Edwards Washbourne the sum of £200 and £2,000 to his
executors - son John, nephew Thomas of Melksham and Henry Edward Astley of Hungerford
to invest for Jane.

He left £3,000 to each of the above executors and also £3,000 each to his
daughters Mary, Sarah and Annie.
To his son John he left all his freehold farm lands and hereditaments at East
Holey, Berks called Church Farm and leasehold and messuage with the workshops and
appurtenances thereto belonging situate in Temple St, Bristol and also to my
copyhold estate tithes or rent charges in lieu of tithes at Pickwick Mills, also
Bacon's Farm.
He devised all his Trust Estates and Mortgage Estates vested in him at his decease
to the said John Curnick, Thomas Curnick and Henry Astley upon the trusts and
subject to the equities affecting the same respectively he empowered his Trustees
to invest any portion of his estate in Public Stocks, Funds of Great Britain,
Indian Empire or any Colonial or Foreign Estate or Government or real securities.
John Curnick . son of William, died 19th March, 1873 at Sanham Green Farm.
His will proved by Charles Godwin of Sanham Green, farmer (husband of Mary) and
Sarah Curnick, spinster, sister, of Hill View, Hungerford. He left under £9,000.
William's widow, Ann, died 26th July 1888 at Hungerford.
Her will was proved at
Oxford by William Curnick of Standen Farm, Hungerford, great nephew, and
Henry D'Oyley Wolvey Astley, Gentleman. She left nearly £4,000.

Septimus, Clara, Mary, Joseph, Martha, Letitia, Charlotte, Amelia and Jane.
Of this family Bartholomew and Clara died without marrying.
Of the boys I have some information. John married Sarah and had, I think, 5 children
- John, Maria, Charles, William and Elizabeth. John died in 1868 at about 80 years
of age. He lived an Newbury and was a broker.
His brother Benjamin lived at Thorpe Farm and died in 1905- Brother Frederick
had moved away to Kenilworth, Warwickshire.
Joseph had, I think, 3 children - Henry, Susan and Sarah. When Sarah was
married in 1847 to John Richens her father Joseph was a yeoman farmer in the
parish of Froxfield, near Hungerford.
A Slade whose name crops up frequently is G-eorge Frederick Slade, solicitor of
ffallingford, who acted as trustee for many of the Blades and Richens when they died.
He himself married twice. His first wife, Emma Jane, died in 1901 at Wallingford
and his second wife, who lived at Woodlea, Wood St, Wallingford, died in 1924.
There is a wide spread of Slades right across Berks, Wilts and Somerset but the
Berkshire Slades who made wills are as follows:-
John Slade of Aston Tirrold, Berks died 1861
