'Nitll tile ladies It's a Woman! • With all the talk about getting a woman in a high governmental position in Washington, D.C., a woman in one of Ihe highest places in \Va~hington may ha v~ been overlooked. She stands on top of the nation's Capitol. Frequently \'i~ilors 10 Washinglon, as well as Washingtonians, ask about her. But their question is put like thi s: "Is that an Indian on top of the Capitol dome?"" Well. it 's not. It's the Statue of Freedom. sometimes rercrr~d 10 as lhe ·'goddess." The Statue of Freedom is a very large woman who ~ !alld s 19 Y.!: fecl tllil a nd weighs 14,985 pounds. She wears a loose-filling garment caught at the wHisl by a brooch bearing the letters "U.S." Her right hand rests on the hill of her sheathed sword. and her left hand holds a wreath while su pporting a shield. Upon her head she wears a hdmet, encircled with stars and topped by an cagle':, head. with an array of feathers that ex tends from the front to the back. The a ppearance of the Statue oC Freedom. which is. often thought 10 be quite militaristic, llpon the Capitol dome during a very cm ci:l l period in American history was in itself a victory. The nation's beautiful Capitol is unique in many ways, particularly because it grew as the nation grew, from Ihe year 1793, when George Washington laid the cornerstone. until the e nd of the Civil War in 1865. The origi nal bui lding was of brick, 352 fcet and four inc hes by 229 feet. The Bri tish burned it down on August 24, 181 4, and plans were immediately made 10 rebuild il. The center west wing was occupied by 1830. The Hall of Ihc House of Reprcsentatiws and the Senate Chamber "'ere added andcomplcled in 1861. The 8,909,200-pound casl-andwrought-iron dome was in the proc- ess of being built when Ihe Civil War began. Many thought it was senseless 10 continue work on the Capitol bui lding while men of a divided country were fighting and dying. But President Abraham Li ncoln ordered a rush job, in spite of a shortage of labor and funds , for he said, " If people sec the Capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the Union shall go on:' Thomas Crawford. thc sculptor of the Sta tue of Freedom, had complctl!d the pl asler model in his Rome, Italy swdio in 1858. That same year, he boarded thc small vessel, the Emily Taylur, with the plaster statue for its trip 10 America. H the Statue of Freedom's voyage had any meaning, it was a foreboding of the Civil War, for the trip was a very storm y one. The strong waves slammed against the bark and it sprang a leak, and the sailors were forced to throw almost everythi ng overboard to save the vessd. Fortunately. they were able to reach Bermuda ror repairs, and the Statue of Freedom was saved. "
