MONDALE FOR PRESIDENT
.. ocranc voters at-large, without any kib
ItZing from us, and we're running ours,
among our members, Without any klb
Itzmgfrom the candidate or hiS campaign
staff.
The AFL-C10's endorsement of Mandale
is not, m any respect, a re,eCtion, a
repudiatiOn or even a criticism of the
other candidates for the DemocratiC
nommatlon.
All arc good men. All, to differing
degrees, have records of decent concern
fo r the well-being of workIng Americans
and needy Americans.
We commend all of them, but we
rccommcnd Waller Mondalc as the standby
John Perkins
National Director, AFL·CIO
Committee on Political Education
Right now, and for the months 1m·
mediately ahead, nothing we can do IS
more Imponanl or has more far· reaching
.. consequences than our campaign to help
Waller Mondale Win the Democratic
Presidential nomination.
.
.
The endorsemenl IS a deeply seriOUS
effort In a very seriOUS and Important
process whIch we hope ultimately will
result 10 election to the Presidency In
1984 of the candidate we honestly feel
can best serve thiS nation and ItS people,
and In defeat of an IOcumbeni President
who we sincerely believe has served the
nation and ItS people unfairly, unfeelmgly,
unwisely and unwell.
The ,oumey to those two goals begms,
like the ,ourney of a thousand miles,
with the first step, wh ich was the endorsement
of Waller Mond3lc.
Let me mention a couple of thmgs that
our endorsement IS not:
We arc not engaged m any macho
exercise In polttlca l muscle-fleXing. We've
hcen around a long nme. Our credentials
are solid. We don't have to posture.
We arc not trymg to capture control
of the Democratic Party. We have no
more Wish to control a politica l party
than to be con trolled by one.
Our work IS certainly not an ad,unct
of the campaign of the candidate hImself
He's running hiS own show among Oem-
out candidate 10 a good field. Look al hiS
credentials and hiS record over hiS twelve
years as a United Stales Senamr and hiS
four years as Vice PreSident of Ihe Umted
States:
As a Scnamr, he voted 93 percent
" right" for workmg people, thelT families
and their umons on the offiC ial AFL·ClO
voung record_
As Vice President, he was a strong
vOice wlthm rus administration fo r ISsues
of cntlcal importance to workers.
There Isn't a working family In the
Umted States who hasn't benefitted from
one or more of the things Walter Mondale
fo ught for and accomphshed m the areas
ofheahh care, education, nutntlon, chdd
carc, CIVil rights, women's Issues, ,ob
safety and heallh, lob-creatmg measures,
transportation, minimum wage, DaVIS
Bacon protection of the standards and
wages of bUilding and construction workers,
public employee rights, unemployment
compensation, workmen's compensation,
environmental protection, and
energy mdcpendence.
While Waller Mondale always W3S 3nd
remams his own man, we can never
forget that hiS mentor was one of the
most decent and concerned humans who
ever graced the political stage.
Walter Mondale was Huben Humphrey's
political protege and then hIS
close political ally and personal fnend
and confidant because they shared a vi
Sion of a canng lIauon.
What W31ter Mondale has fought
against tells as much about hIm as a man
and a candidate as what he fought for.
He has fought agamst special tax pnv·
liege for corporations and wealthy mdl
viduals;
Against the almost bou ndless power
of big 011;
Against the rape of our public lands
by private in terests;
Against the nay-sayers and doom-cners
and union·busters of the righ t wing who
saw nothing good in the presidencies of
Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, lohn
Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson, and noth
Ing but good In those of Millard Fillmore,
Wilham McKinley, CalVin Coolidge and
Herbert Hoover
That'S Mondale past. Mondale future
IS the Important thing we have to con
SIder now. There IS every SIgn and token
that he IS as close to us today as he has
been throughout hiS many years In pol·
IUCS.
He's for a full-employment law-with
teeth In It- and for ,obs for all who want
to work. There IS no chance that he
would brush off 10 percent unemployment
as nothing bUI an mconvemem
statistic.
He's for rebUilding Amenea's stncken
baSIC Industnes. He knows, as we know,
that they arc not onl y the source of
nullions of ,obs, but the foundaflon of
our economic strength and our military
strength. If they crumble. there goes the
reSt of It.
He's for fair trade that IS as bend1clal
to American workers and Amencan·made
products as It IS to the countnes we trade
with. He will not stand by expoundmg
empty dogmas about "free trade" while
a ragmg flood of Imports drowns the iobs
of millions of American workers.
He's for bener education, better health
and better notrmon programs. He's com
mnted to ,ob-creatlng step-ups In hous-
109 programs, highway and bndge repair,
to modernization and ex tensIOn of our
transportation systems. These are ISSUes
that govern millions of ,obs and affect
the health, welfare and lobs of mlillOns
of us.
He IS with us-with workmg people
and needy people and small bUSiness
people- and he understands and suppOrtS
the asplnwons of lust-pia III-people ev·
erywhere.
Some pundits and even some candi
dates arc seeking to label Walte r Mondale
as a captive of "special interests"
