Academics
This University of South Carolina Maymester program in Argentina and Chile 2013 will be taught by
Professor Jim Byrum from USC’s Department of Geography and will provide students with 3 academic
credits upon successful completion. Using the unique geography of Argentina and Chile and the notable
urban characteristics of Buenos Aires, Santiago and Mendoza, the USC course will be a mixture of lectures
by Professor Byrum, presentations by local business and government guests and visits to historic and
other important sites in the region. One of Buenos Aires’ historic universities is providing the program
with a base of activities in the city. The International Studies Abroad (ISA) will provide local on‐site
program support and work closely with Professor Byrum in arranging guest speakers, choosing sites of
academic interest and facilitating the logistical support required for group transportation, meeting set‐up,
and special services when necessary. USC will be responsible for all course content and the provision of
USC credits for students who successfully complete the program.
Student Accommodations
While in Buenos Aires, students will be able to experience the unique culture of Buenos Aires by staying
with local host families. In addition to having an opportunity to be immersed in the local Argentine
culture, students will be able enjoy aspects of the Argentinean lifestyle that would be inaccessible to most
visitors. The host family homes are located in the university area within walking distance or via local bus
trip, to where classes will be held. Speaking Spanish is definitely not a requirement for this course. Most
of the host families, however, do not speak English, and even though some households might have one or
more English‐speaking members, the families are encouraged to speak primarily Spanish for the benefit of
the experience. Students are normally housed two to a room. The families provide breakfast and dinner
daily, plus laundry service weekly. On excursions outside of the city, students will stay in 3‐star or better
hotels and hostels, generally in double rooms. Triples are used if the gender breakout requires it. Students
are responsible for some of their lunches and occasionally a dinner meal. There are also a number of
special group dinners and lunches provided.
