ARCHERY IS A SAFE ACTIVITY<br />
COMPARISON OF SPORTS PARTICIPATION AND INJURY RATES<br />
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) operates <strong>the</strong> National Electronic Injury<br />
Surveillance System (NEISS) database, which is used to track hospital <strong>in</strong>juries for more than<br />
15,000 k<strong>in</strong>ds of consumer products used <strong>in</strong> sports and recreational activities <strong>in</strong> and around homes<br />
and schools. Data from <strong>the</strong> NEISS are a critical resource for consumer groups, manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry organizations, <strong>the</strong> media, educators, researchers and attorneys.<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g figure 1. shows <strong>in</strong>jury rates for common physical education activities offered <strong>in</strong> most<br />

Teachers attend tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to become certified NASP Basic<br />
<strong>Archery</strong> Instructors. The emphasis of this tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is to<br />
safely teach archery. The equipment and range protocols<br />
all contribute to safety.<br />
More than 300 M<strong>in</strong>nesota schools, from W<strong>in</strong>dom to Warroad,<br />
and as diverse as M<strong>in</strong>neapolis and Mounta<strong>in</strong> Iron<br />
have started archery programs with no impact to <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>surance<br />
rates.
