Drugs Project
Recently we looked at decision making and risk management. Those are features of every
day life, and using them together can help you succeed in life. Decisions can be as simple as
what to wear for the day or whether you should get groceries today or tomorrow; and as
complicated as whether you should sign up for that class next semester or where you should
invest your money.
A major decision that affects many of us daily is the choice to use drugs and alcohol. There
is risk related to drug and alcohol use, yet many people choose to use them. In this project
you will be required to look at drugs and alcohol and examine the decisions and risks
surrounding the choices people make.
Students will draw for groups. After all have drawn, students find others with the same drug
topic. Topics are:
• Club drugs
• Hallucinogens
• Sedatives
• Narcotics
• Amphetamines
• Inhalants
• Alcohol
Each group will be responsible for the facts involving their assigned drug, such as street
names, different kinds of drugs in the category, short-term and long-term effects on the
body, and treatment. Groups should also explore addiction and recovery processes in general,
and the effects of drug abuse on society, family, friends, work, school, etc.
Students will present the project to the class as a PowerPoint. Students will have access to the
library and computer lab during the project, and most work will occur during class time,
although additional time outside of school may be required to rehearse the presentation.
Marks given as a combination of individual and group assessment, according to how well
the following are covered:
• the category and forms of the drug, and how it is taken: 15 points
• street or common names of the drug: 10 points
• other drugs within the same category: 10 points
• short-term and long-term effects on the body: 10 points
• the addiction and recovery process: 15 points
• well-prepared, interesting PowerPoint presentation: 20 points
• contributed to group effort: 20 points
o
Total: 100 points
