Introductory note<br />
This essay orig<strong>in</strong>ally appeared <strong>in</strong> The Himalayan Mission, a booklet commemorat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> centenary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moravian</strong> <strong>Church</strong> <strong>in</strong> Leh <strong>in</strong> 1985. The booklet is now very hard<br />
to f<strong>in</strong>d, even <strong>in</strong> Leh, but I judge that it reta<strong>in</strong>s some value as a concise <strong>in</strong>troduction to<br />
<strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moravian</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Himalayan region. I am very <strong>the</strong>refore pleased to<br />
have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to make this version available via <strong>the</strong> Internet.<br />
My own engagement with this history started <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 1970s. I spent a year teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moravian</strong> Institute <strong>in</strong> Rajpur from 1978 to 1979 and <strong>in</strong> 1980 moved to Leh<br />
where I helped restart <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moravian</strong> Mission School. While I was <strong>in</strong> Leh, I had <strong>the</strong><br />
opportunity to read <strong>the</strong> Leh church library’s hold<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old mission magaz<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
Missionsblatt der Brüdergeme<strong>in</strong>e, which described Ladakh as it had been a century<br />
earlier. I wrote some <strong>in</strong>itial notes on <strong>the</strong> church’s history while I was still <strong>in</strong> Ladakh.<br />
After mov<strong>in</strong>g to London <strong>in</strong> 1983, I cont<strong>in</strong>ued my researches at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moravian</strong> <strong>Church</strong><br />
House Archives and Library as well as <strong>the</strong> archives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British and Foreign Bible<br />
Society (and afterwards, too late for this essay, at <strong>the</strong> Archiv der Brüder-Unität <strong>in</strong><br />
Herrnhut). Rev Stephen Hishey, who served as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moravian</strong> pastor <strong>in</strong> Leh dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
1980s, encouraged me to write up my f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong> church’s centenary.<br />
The history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moravian</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Himalayan region has rema<strong>in</strong>ed a lifelong <strong>in</strong>terest,<br />
and both I and o<strong>the</strong>rs have contributed a number <strong>of</strong> publications on related topics<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce 1985. Ra<strong>the</strong>r than review <strong>the</strong>m here, I have <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> an extended<br />
updated bibliography <strong>of</strong> older and newer works at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> essay.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> my researches for this essay, I <strong>in</strong>curred a number <strong>of</strong> debts <strong>of</strong> gratitude<br />
and it is a pleasure to acknowledge <strong>the</strong>m now. These start with Rev Thsespal Kundan,<br />
a fellow student <strong>in</strong> Cambridge who <strong>in</strong>troduced me to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moravian</strong>s and ultimately to<br />
Ladakh. In Rajpur, I benefitted from <strong>the</strong> hospitality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kundan family for a year,<br />
and first got to know Stephen Hishey. I would not have spent my year <strong>in</strong> Leh without<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel Batapa <strong>in</strong> press<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> revival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mission School. I<br />
look back with great fondness to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> older Ladahi <strong>Moravian</strong>s who<br />
have now passed away, especially Sungz<strong>in</strong> Phuntsog, Eliezer Joldan, Daniel and<br />
Benjam<strong>in</strong> Dana and Rev Standz<strong>in</strong> Razu. In a conversation <strong>in</strong> Leh bazaar, Nawang<br />
Tser<strong>in</strong>g Shakspo impressed on me <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> bibliographic citations. Rev P.D.<br />
Sham Rao published an earlier version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> essay <strong>in</strong> Krisht Vidya, <strong>the</strong> journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Christian Retreat and Study Centre <strong>in</strong> Rajpur In London, I am grateful for <strong>the</strong> support<br />
