The conclusion to be drawn from this study is that for the centuries between the emergence of Confessio Amantis and The Mysterious Mother, patriarchy will be upheld by any means necessary. Reading incest illuminates that while the concern for preserving patriarchy remains the same, it is the threats to patriarchy which change. Patriarchy is depicted in part in the argument for the divine right of kings to rule over their people, an idea that is rooted in Biblical narratives. By the fourteenth century the idea of divine right began to be questioned, and in the 17 th century many began to chafe at James’s insistence on this right to rule absolutely, finally rejecting it with the beheading of Charles I. By the 1760s Gothic narratives such as Walpole’s then reiterated the analogies of man as microcosm and earthly kingdom as model of the heavenly kingdom, kingdoms which thrive only when a virtuous king is on the throne. And though incest questions, subverts, and undermines existing power structures, for these four centuries, patriarchy is established and confirmed repeatedly.
