exemplifies the SVD‘s
triumphs throughout the 75
its Mission to the community.
An Opening Mass was
officiated by no less than the
the college).
Various sports competitions
were participated in by
the different colleges. Lecture
An
academic forum
on ―A Social
the 2010 National
was held at the
Rigney Hall on
March 2, 2010
distinguished
social scientist
and former
professor at the
Dept. of Sociology
at UP Diliman
as
speaker.
The
forum drew an audience from the students of
Sociology and Anthropology at the Talamban
Campus. Prof. Bello talked about the prevailing
discourse and issues tackled by politicians
in the election campaign. He emphasized
that corruption per se should not be the
highlight of the campaigns as there are
deeper roots to the economic crisis in the
country, such as the foreign debt, trade liberalization,
and other political-economic issues.
He cited that most politicians in the
campaign do not have a clear stand on these
issues and concrete programs on how to
bring the country out of the long-entrenched
economic crisis.
After the forum, Professor Bello
proceeded to have lunch at the Department
Carolinians challenged to be Indispensable
Witnesses to the Word of God
by: Melvin C. Tampus, MA
The ReEd 10 students
held their co-curricular
activity Bible Enthronement
last July 31 at the St. Arnold
Janssen and St. Joseph
Freinademitz Church. The
students participated in
the celebration of the Holy
Eucharist wherein which
their Bibles were blessed
with holy water by the
priest-presider. This was
a solemn opportunity for
the students to consider
the relevance of the Word
of God into their lives as
Christians. The students
were made to realize
from the reading and
homily the truth proclaimed
in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
"All scripture is inspired by
God and is useful for teaching
the truth, rebuking error,
correcting faults, and giving
instruction for right living,
so that the person who
Reed students during the Eucharistic Celebration at
St. Joseph Freinademetz Church
serves God may be fully
qualified and equipped to
do every kind of good
philosophy and religious studies
deed." Definitely, to use the
Bible is of vital importance as
St. Jerome (c. 345-420 C E),
a Doctor of Biblical Science,
puts it that ―Ignorance
of the Bible is ignorance
of Christ‖. The
ReEd students in
general are incessantly
reminded to:
read and study, meditate
upon, live out and
share the truths revealed
by the Holy
Triune God in the
Holy Scriptures. In
this modern time of
prevalent moral degeneration,Carolinians
are constantly
challenged to become authentic
ReEd faculty having their annual Spiritual Retreat, June 3-5 at Sto. Nino
Spirituality Center, Tulotulo, Consolacion, Cebu
The ReEd faculty
ardently joined in their annual
Spiritual Retreat last June 3-5
at the distinctively beautiful
retreat house-- the Sto. Nino
Spirituality Center, Tulotulo,
Consolacion, Cebu. Their
competent and vivacious facilitator
was Fr. Valentino
Related Theological Movements‖
that superbly integrated
Classical Christology,
Ecclesiology, Sacramentology
and Soteriology.
He emphatically conveyed
the point that: ―Christ came
to us in his incarnation,
emptied himself and took
the form of a slave, gave
Himself to us in the Eucharist
as the nourishment for
our body and soul, and
promised us in His resurrec-
tion the life of a transformed
humanity.‖ The sharing consequently
contributed to our
knowledge on the following
themes: Incarnation of Jesus
Christ, Earthly Life and
Death of Christ, Institution of
the Eucharist and Resurrection
of Christ. The retreat
participants also availed of
the two important sacraments
of the Holy Eucharist
and Reconciliation providing
them essential divine graces
pertinent to their challenging
mission of unwavering evangelization.
The retreat positively
provided an integral
theological input that could
somehow deepen the information,
formation and transformation
of the individual
person.
Right after the retreat,
the ReEd faculty had
his Dissertation titled God,
Interpreting Some Religious
Themes in Levinas’s Ethical Philosophy.
Dr. Urbano‗s study explores
the depth and the richness
of the ethical and religious philosophy
of Emmanuel Levinas. It
particularly examines his thoughts
on God, religion, atheism, and
idolatry in order to highlight his
significance in an age known as
postmodern, generally characterized
as secular and even godless.
This study has also ventured to
explicate how Levinas‘ thoughts
on religion can help address contemporary
issues on religious pluralism,
fundamentalism, and dialogue.
Dr. Urbano completed his
Masters in Philosophy in USC in
1998 and Masters in Applied Ethics
in Linköping University, Sweden
and Utrecht University, The
last July 11, 2010
at the Waterfront Cebu City
Hotel and Casino. A milestone
was reached as the
Department celebrated 50
years of Economics program
provision by the University.
This inspired the
theme of the event
―Coming Together at 50,
since ‗60‖ to depict our first
grand alumni gathering and
50 years of existence.
Considering this
was our first gathering with
only more than 700 alumni
since 1960, the evening
started with an impressive
turnout
with more than 100
alumni who attended
the event.
The batch cohorts
were well represented
with the
special presence of
the University
President, Director
of Alumni Affairs and Fr. Mar
The nostalgic atmosphere
started to kick in
when we opened the Alumni
Memoirs Exhibit. All alumni
saw their old pictures, which
reminded them of their
memorable college experiences.
Some enjoyed in
creating more experiences
that night by showing their
We formally started
the program with Fr. Dionisio
examination for statistics
to all interested freshman
students with above
average and superior IQ,
including those first year
students who graduated
either Valedictorian or Salutatorian
The exam was conducted
last August 7, 2010 at the
SMED Audio Visual Room
and was attended by students
from the College of
Arts & Sciences, College of
will represent the University
in this year‘s edition of the
took the qualifying exam,
the department selects the
top 3 students based on
our palates without our classmates
beside us enjoying every
laughter as we chew.
Before we choke ourselves
with the sweet and bitter
attention was directed to Mr. Alex
he offered the Alumni Toast which
aroused once again the inner
being Carolinian Economics majors
The feeling of pride continued
when it was the time for
his speech. Our speaker was no
other than the Department and
his latest find, he recorded a video of the
impact of an asteroid on the lower right
side of Jupiter. Using special filters for
his telescope, he was able to show the
presence of a bright spot which lasted for
about a second. Although the impact size
is huge, this short duration can be explained
by the fact that Jupiter‘s surface
gravity is 2.5 times than Earth‘s so its
impacts on planetary surfaces are common,
they are very seldom documented
Dr. Alfred S. Schlachter, a
physicist from the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory at the University of
California, visited the University of San
Carlos on March 15, 2010. He gave a
talk titled, ―Over a barrel: revolutionizing
was made possible by the Office of Research
and the Department of Physics.
Dr. Schlachter is a very accomplished
scientist with expertise in the field of
atomic and molecular physics, x-rays and
synchrotron radiation among others. He
is also an energy efficiency proponent
Society (APS) evaluation report in 2008
titled ―Energy Future: Think Efficiency.
How America can look within to achieve
energy security and reduce global warming.‖
In his talk, Dr. Schlachter discussed
several issues related to the
dwindling supply of oil and how we can
adapt. The message of his talk centered
on different ways of making our energy
use more efficient by applying newly developed
technologies. He also emphasized
the need for a slow withdrawal from
the use of fossil fuels which would even-
atmosphere can suppress more the fragments
of the impact.
He credited his find to his fellow
amateur astronomer from Australia, Anthony
Wesley who sent an initial alert on
this suspected impact. In his journal, Christopher
writes ―Today was supposed to be
a routine imaging run. Seeing was perfect.
And this was on the boring side of Jupiter.
On my second image sequence using the
blue filter, I luckily imaged an impact on
