2010 is a special year
for the College of Arts and Sciences
as the college hosts the
celebration of the 75 Years of
SVD Mission, and the Foundation
2010. The theme of this year‘s
grand celebration ―Celebrating
Milestones, Expanding Horizons:
75 Years of SVD Mission‖
exemplifies the SVD‘s
triumphs throughout the 75
years and onwards in fulfilling
its Mission to the community.
An Opening Mass was
officiated by no less than the
Father President himself, Fr.
the Saints Arnold and Joseph
different was the competition
for the 1 st –ever Mr.
the college).
Various sports competitions
were participated in by
the different colleges. Lecture
of the big event. This
year‘s Socio- Cultural Night
titled ―Curtain Call‖ was directed
by one of USC‘s Outstanding
Alumni awardee, Mr.
Dioscoro O. Dayag, Jr. It was
indeed a night of various talents
in singing, dancing, modelling
showcased by USC‘s very
own students, faculty and staff.
The Himig Pinoy,
was held at the
as
speaker.
The
forum drew an audience from the students of
Sociology and Anthropology at the Talamban
Campus. Prof. Bello talked about the prevailing
discourse and issues tackled by politicians
in the election campaign. He emphasized
that corruption per se should not be the
highlight of the campaigns as there are
deeper roots to the economic crisis in the
country, such as the foreign debt, trade liberalization,
and other political-economic issues.
He cited that most politicians in the
campaign do not have a clear stand on these
issues and concrete programs on how to
bring the country out of the long-entrenched
economic crisis.
After the forum, Professor Bello
proceeded to have lunch at the Department
Carolinians challenged to be Indispensable
by: Melvin C. Tampus, MA
The ReEd 10 students
students participated in
the celebration of the Holy
their Bibles were blessed
priest-presider. This was
a solemn opportunity for
the students to consider
the relevance of the Word
of God into their lives as
Christians. The students
were made to realize
from the reading and
homily the truth proclaimed
in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
"All scripture is inspired by
God and is useful for teaching
the truth, rebuking error,
correcting faults, and giving
instruction for right living,
so that the person who
qualified and equipped to
deed." Definitely, to use the
Bible is of vital importance as
St. Jerome (c. 345-420 C E),
a Doctor of Biblical Science,
puts it that ―Ignorance
of the Bible is ignorance
the form of a slave, gave
Himself to us in the Eucharist
as the nourishment for
our body and soul, and
promised us in His resurrec-
contributed to our
themes: Incarnation of Jesus
Christ, Earthly Life and
Death of Christ, Institution of
Dr. Urbano‗s study explores
the depth and the richness
of the ethical and religious philosophy
of Emmanuel Levinas. It
particularly examines his thoughts
on God, religion, atheism, and
idolatry in order to highlight his
significance in an age known as
postmodern, generally characterized
as secular and even godless.
This study has also ventured to
explicate how Levinas‘ thoughts
on religion can help address contemporary
issues on religious pluralism,
Dr. Urbano completed his
This inspired the
theme of the event
―Coming Together at 50,
50 years of existence.
Considering this
was our first gathering with
started with an impressive
turnout
with more than 100
The batch cohorts
were well represented
of Computer Science (CS). It has
been split from the formerly-known Department
of Mathematics and Computer Science,
making way for the two departments:
Computer Science and Mathematics. The
CS Department is headed by its Officer-in-
Ms. Maria Sheila S. Wong; and Laboratory
Head: Mr. Lhar S. Gil.
The department is located at the
fourth level of the Lawrence Bunzel Building
in Talamban Campus. Currently, there are
1,320 undergraduate students enrolled in
the CS Department distributed among its six
his telescope, he was able to show the
by the fact that Jupiter‘s surface
Dr. Schlachter is a very accomplished
titled ―Energy Future: Think Efficiency.
How America can look within to achieve
energy security and reduce global warming.‖
In his talk, Dr. Schlachter discussed
several issues related to the
dwindling supply of oil and how we can
adapt. The message of his talk centered
on different ways of making our energy
technologies. He also emphasized
the need for a slow withdrawal from
the use of fossil fuels which would even-
He credited his find to his fellow
amateur astronomer from Australia, Anthony
this suspected impact. In his journal, Christopher
writes ―Today was supposed to be
a routine imaging run. Seeing was perfect.
