Whole Person Wellness Opportunities Offered
By Janet Balasko *
In 1 Corinthians 10:31 we read, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do,
do it ALL for the glory of God.”
For any of us to become what God wants us to be, we must keep our mind, body,
and spirit connected. That is not always the easiest thing to accomplish. We all
struggle with job, family, and life stresses that take a toll on keeping ourselves well. By
watching the news or reading a local paper we are reminded that the State of North
Carolina is dealing with some serious health issues.
Heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lung disease are the leading causes
of death in North Carolina. The question we must answer for ourselves is how do we as
followers of Christ remember that our “…body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?”
Two more spiritual and physical wellness opportunities have come to the North
Carolina Conference.
1) Gene Smart – Living Abundantly:
This is a nine-week class experience designed to revolutionize the way
individuals feel about their health, exercise, prayer (spiritual life or practices) and eating
habits.
Based upon the cutting edge research and principles outlined in the ground
breaking book, “The Gene Smart Diet,” by Dr. Floyd Chilton, professor of physiology at
Wake Forest University, and in collaboration with CareNet of North Carolina, a
statewide outpatient faith-integrated counseling network of North Carolina Baptist
Hospital, this program explores the relationship between person’s genes and their diet.
At the same time, it carefully integrates the essential role of a healthy mind, body,
and spirit to achieve a life lived abundantly.
In addition, thanks to state-of-the art blood testing that assesses targeted health
risk areas, and a specific emphasis on ways to embrace the role (place) of God in our
lives, participants are supported in their goals to lose weight, reduce their dependence
on certain medicines, acquired increased energy and enjoy improved self image.
This unique opportunity for the laity and clergy of the NC Conference will remind
participants about the importance of keeping mind, body, and spirit in balance. We all
recognize that if one part of our life is out of sync it affects all other parts. Jennifer
Russomanno, a certified personal trainer along with the Rev. Janet Balasko can present
a Mind, Body, and Spirit Wellness Seminar to individual churches or districts. During
the seminar there will be four sessions: 1) Spiritual wellness 2) Nutrition, 3) Emotional
Aspects of Eating, and 4) a Workout.
