Because of the small number of cases and due to the fact<br />

that the problems associated with maternal mortality cases<br />

might be different than those associated with perinatal and<br />

neonatal mortality, only a brief descriptive analysis of<br />

maternal mortality will follow.<br />

9.1. Maternal characteristics<br />

Among these mothers' characteristics, there was one<br />

clearly different than those found among women who did not die<br />

from causes associated with reproduction: maternal age. The<br />

cases were older than the majority of mothers, ranging from 30<br />

to 43 years of age;<br />

the maternal mortality cases average age<br />

was 39 years while the median was 40.<br />
