Motivation Moments or “Why I Relay”
Like Mission Moments educate Relayers about the mission of the American
Cancer Society, Motivation Moments help to reconnect Relayers to why they
have dedicated themselves to fighting back against cancer – Why they
Relay. These simple activities also give a positive start to a meeting.
Use the following ideas or create your own…
• Provide a helium filled balloon for each participant and sharpie pens. Ask each person to
write the name of a person they Relay for on the balloon. Tie the balloon on their chair,
in the center of the table or some other place as a constant reminder of why they work
so diligently to fight back. Ask a couple of volunteers to briefly tell why they Relay.
• Create a list of questions and put on a flipchart at the front of the room (some fun
questions like, who would you add to Mt. Rushmore, and some based around why they
Relay). Everyone stands in a circle. As a question is asked, the person asking the
question throws the ball of string to the person they are asking the question to. Repeat
this at least 2 times around the circle. It not only helps folks get to know each other but
also visually shows how we are all intertwined with our interpersonal communication.
• Invite participants to share their “Why I Relay” story. Emotional stories touch our hearts
and this is one good way to get to know our fellow Relayers better.
• Read an inspirational story about someone who is fighting cancer. (Tip: Find short, nicely
written stories of survivors and caregivers at cancer.org/heroesofhope)
• Read a poem related to cancer. (Tip: Find great poem ideas on relayforlife.org.)
• Hold a mini-luminaria ceremony. Let each person decorate a bag with the name of
someone they love.
• Put together a photo display of “Our Reasons to Relay” that is displayed at each Team
Captain meeting. Team Captains bring photos of people they are Relaying for. This
serves as a constant reminder of personal reasons to be involved in Relay. Add pictures
as desired.
• Place a sticky note at each chair. Start by reminding everyone that each person has a
special reason why they Relay. Have them write the first thing that comes to their mind
on the sticky note. When you say the word CANCER, quickly collect the notes. Place the
notes on a wall or flip chart. Put the notes in groups, i.e. people they know, emotions,
frustrations, financial difficulties, etc. Working from this theme you can then go into a
Mission Moment at the end of your meeting. This can also work well with a “Fight Back”
