CHAPELIZOD.<br />
CHAPELIZOD, a village partly in Palmerstown parish, Uppereross barony, but chiefly in the parish of the same<br />
aame, Castleknock barony, Dublin county, three miles W. from the General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an<br />
area of 63 acres. Population, 1,280, inhabiting "255 houses. It is partly situate on the river Liffey, on the high<br />
road to Gal way, and near to the Great Southern and Western line of Railway, It is said to derive its name from<br />
ha belle Izod, daughter of King Aengus. King William III. spent several days in it; and prior to the erection<br />
of the Viceregal lodge, it was the country residence of the Viceroy. Its buildings are, a Church, with an ivied<br />
tower, a Roman Catholic Church, a Dispensary, a National School, and Metropolitan Police Station. Steam<br />
tramway starts from Convnghani-road.<br />

LONDALKIN, an inland parish and village, partly in Newcastle, but chiefly in Uppercross barony, Dublin<br />
c owyt44xnile^ S.W. from Dublin,comprising an area of 4,777 acres, of which 44 are in the village. Population,<br />
i 'S ; of village, 470, mhabiting 88 houses. It is situated near the ninth lock of the Grand Canal, and close to<br />
j e line of the Great Southern and Western Railway, of which it is the first station from Dublin. It tvas anciently

named Cluain- Polcan, and by the Danes Pun-awley. The village consists chiefly of one irregular street, of small<br />
but neatly built houses and cottages. The only public buildings are the Parish Church, a small plain modern<br />
building, and a neat Roman Catholic Church. It has Almshouses for destitute widows, a Dorcas Institution,<br />
Lying-in Hospital, and Dispensary, a Parochial and two National Schools, and a Constabulary Police Station.<br />
The ancient round tower is the nearest structure of the kind to the metropolis, and is in good preservation. It<br />
stands 100 feet high, and is 15 feet in diameter, covered with a conical roof of stone.<br />

CLONSKKAGU, a village in the parisli of St. Mary's. Donnvbrook, barony and county of Dublin, three miles S. from<br />
the General Post Orftce, Dublin, comprising an area oi h'H acres. There is a male and female National school.<br />
Population, 310, inhabiting 54 houses. It is situated on the river Dodder, and on the road to Enniskerry.<br />
It contains two hammer-smith iron works. The neighbourhood is studded with gentlemen's seats and villas,<br />
the principal of which is Clonskeagh castle, the seat of Capt. Robert Wade Thompson. Veryemount is a pretty<br />
range of houses close to the village. Roebuck, a district half a mile further on, is covered with elegant mansions<br />
and demesnes, of which the castle of that name, the seat of E. P. Westby, esq., is conspicuous. MiKtotr/i is<br />
less than half a mile to the right of Clonskeagh, in the parish of Milltown, Uppercross barony, and comprises<br />
an area of 185 acres. Population 863, inhabiting 13"2 houses. The Church of St. Philip, which has recently<br />
been erected, is situate at Temple-road, Rathmines, adjoining the Milltown railway station. There is a small<br />
Roman Catholic Church. The Parish Chuych is situate at St. Mary's, Simmonscourt, Donnybrook. The<br />
tram-cars ply to Clonskeagh from Sackville-street. There are three deliveries of letters daily from the Sub-Post<br />
office at Milltown.<br />

PALMERSTOWN., or PALMERSTON, a parish and village in Uppercross barony, Dublin county, five miles west from<br />
the General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an area of 1,5L8 acres. Population of the parish, 1,511. It is<br />
situated on the river Liffey and road to Lucan. The village consists of small humble dwellings, irregularly<br />
built, a Roman Catholic chapel, and Constabulary Police station. The Great Southern and Western line<br />
of railway passes through the parish. In the vicinity there are several handsome seats and villas, the<br />
principal of which is Palmerstown House, a former seat of the Earl of Donoughmore, erected by his ancestor,<br />
the Right Hon. T. H. Hutchinson, when Secretary for Ireland. It is now occupied by the Stewart Institution.<br />
It is a spacious mansion on an elevated situation, commanding fine views. A fair for horses and cattle, well<br />
frequented, takes place on 21st August. There is now a steam tramway which starts from Conyngham-road<br />
and runs to Lucan and Leixlip.<br />

RATHCOOLE, an inland town and parish in Newcastle barony, Dublin county, 10 miles 3. W. from Dablin,com<br />
prising an area of 4,705 acres. Population, 459. The town, which was anciently called Radcull, is situated<br />
upon the road to Naas, and consists of one street, about a quarter of a mile in length, chieily of small houses<br />
and cabins, irregularly built. The only public building is the Parish Church, a neat plain edifice. It has a<br />
Dispensary. It is the head station of the Constabulary force of the district of Uppercross. About two miles<br />
and a half N. W. from Rathcoole is the parish and village of Newcastle^ comprising an area of 4/283 acres.<br />
Population, 1,108. It is situated on the Grand Canal. The village was formerly a borough, having a<br />
portrieve and burgesses under charter of James I., and prior to the Union, sent two members to the Irish<br />
parliament. The Church is an ancient picturesque edifice, covered with ivy, having a tine eastern window.<br />
The Roman Catholic Chun h is a neat building, with a belfry. There is a Dispensary and National Schools<br />
Petty Sessions are held ever}' alternate Friday. There is a Postal Telegraph Office at the Post Office.<br />

RATHFARNHAM, a parish and village in Uppercross and Rathdown baronies, Dublin county,tour miles south<br />
from the General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an area of 2,581 acres. Population, 5,555. It is situated on the<br />
road to Whitechurch, and near where the Military-road commences that crosses the mountains into Wicklow<br />
county. The village consists of one long irregular street: the Church on the right side, with a tower and spire.<br />
The Roman Catholic Church is a large building. The Loretto Convent, in the vicinity, is a modern building,<br />
attached to which there is an elegant chapel, a female free school, also a ladies' 1 boarding and day school. The<br />
Novitiate College of the Augustinians and St. UolumbVs College are in the neighbourhood. There is also a<br />
Dispensary, a Petty Sessions Court-house, and Constabulary Police Station. Three fairs are held in the year-<br />
May 15, July 10, October 7. The bridge of Rathfarnham, over the river Dodder, is several hundred yards from<br />
the village, the approach to which is rising ground, thickly shaded in summer by the trees of the demesnes on<br />
each side. The neighbourhood abounds in pretty seats and villas, commanding rich views of the Dublin<br />
mountains and bay. At Grange is situated the tt Priory," the residence of the famous John Philpot Curran.<br />
The castle of Rathfarnham was built by Archbishop Loftus in the reign of Elizabeth. One of the entrances to the<br />
demesne, fronting the Dodder, is in the style of a Roman triumphal arch. The entrance to the castle is by a portico<br />
of eight Doric columns that support a dome painted in fresco with the signs of the zodiac. Ballyboden, a village in<br />
the parish of Whitechurch, is about one and a quarter miles farther on, and comprises an area of two acres.<br />
Population, 252, There is a Postal Telegraph Office at the Post Office.<br />

RATHGAR, a townland in Rathfamham parish, Rathdown barony, Dublin county, 3 miles south from the General<br />
ost Office, Dublin. Population of township, 1891, •27,729. 'it is situated midway between Rathmines and<br />
erenure, on the road to Rathfarnham and Tallaght, and is now one of the most pleasing outlets of the<br />
metropolis, studded with handsome terraces or detached villas, and several pretty avenues diverging from the<br />
centre and leading^ to wards Harold's-cross, the river Dodder, Terenure, and Upper Rathmines. There are<br />
several handsome churches. There is a tramway from Dublin to Terenure, and there is a Postal Telegraph<br />
omce at the Town Sub-office, U and 45 Hi^hfield-road.<br />
