These records make up a city's history and by consulting
them you may find the periods of growth and progress, the
periods of shrinkage in population and retrogression, if such
there have been.
In the Directory offices of the larger cities a library of the
Directories of the cities of the country is kept for the use of
patrons, and frequently consulted because of the recognized
value and the extent of the information they contain and the
well known fact that there is no surer basis upon which an accurate
opinion of a city may be formed.
Abilene is located in the central northern part of the State,
in a country formerly devoted to stock raising because of the
inadequacy of transportation facilities; it is a country of fertile
soil, with a delightful climate, and vast agricultural possibilities,
which increased railway mileage in operation and building have
made it possible and profitable to develop agriculturally. As
the country around has become more thickly populated, Abilene's
growth has kept pace with it, and as this population is
rapidly increasing Abilene will naturally benefit in growth and
commercial importance, and because of the enterprise of her
citizens and her superior facilities, continue, as she is today, the
chief commercial and educational center between the cities of
Fort Worth and El Paso.
