This is tape 38 interviewer done by Kalolaine Mapa date November 28, 1973 at Ha’atu’a ‘Eua<br />

<strong>Tonga</strong>. The name <strong>of</strong> the interviewee is <strong>Sione</strong> ‘Iongi and he will recite his genealogy.<br />

This is the first interview concerning this genealogy.<br />

I am <strong>Sione</strong> ‘Iongi from Ha’atu’a, ‘Eua, I was born on November 6, 1922. I was born in<br />

Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>. I was married on Feb. 17, 1943. I was married to a woman name ‘Ilaise<br />

Mafi ‘Iongi. Our oldest child is<br />

1) Manufekai ‘Iongi. He was born on November 8, 1943. In Mu’a <strong>Tonga</strong> Tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He<br />

died on January 26, 1944.<br />

2) (M)<strong>Sione</strong> Fa’apulia ‘Iongi, born January 5, 1944 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong> Tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. And<br />

he married Melenaite in Vava’u<br />

3) (F)Mele Finau ‘Iongi. Born August 13, 1945 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong> Tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. She died<br />

December 15, 1958.<br />

12. Hailame ‘Iongi, born Sept. 7, 1962 in Nuku’al<strong>of</strong>a <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu, he died on Sept. 7, 1962.<br />

13 ‘Elikimi ‘Iongi born August 2, 1964, in Ha’atu’a ‘Eua <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

My father is Semisi ‘Iongi and my mother is Mele Musie Teu. Their children are as follow.<br />

1) (M) Viliami ‘Iongi born March 31, 1911 in Ha’alalo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. He died May 12, 1912,<br />

2) (M)‘Atelotu Vusika ‘Iongi, born Apr 13 1913 in Ha’akame <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. married Lisia Kafoa.<br />

3) ‘Amelia Semipilivi ‘Iongi, born April 6, 1916 in Ha’alalo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>, She married a<br />

man name Siupeli Lauaki form Lapaha, <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

4) ‘Iunita ‘Iongi, born Oct 22, 1918 in Ha’alalo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu, married ‘Ilaisa Manufekai, from<br />

Pelehake.<br />

5) Kitione Vaka ‘Iongi, born Sept 28, 1920 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He married<br />

Kalolaine Pueki.<br />

6) <strong>Sione</strong> ‘Iongi, born Nov. 6 1922 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. married ‘Ilaise Mafi Tu’ipulotu..<br />

7 & 8) Taniela ‘Iongi with twin sister Neomai ‘Iongi. were born Oct. 28 1925 in Tokomololo<br />

<strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. Taniela died Nov 19 and Neomai died in October 1925.<br />

9) Lepolo ‘Iongi, born Nov 10, 1928 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

10) ‘Alisi ‘Ufitonga ‘Iongi, born Sept 13, 1930 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. She married<br />

Henele Tau’aho Maile.<br />

11) Uasila’a ‘Iongi born August 28, 1933 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. Died 1933.<br />

Our oldest sister is ‘Akineti Lusita ‘Iongi married Lisiua Kafoa, their children are as follow.<br />

1) (M)Poini’avaiola Kafoa, born May 5, 1928 in Nuku’al<strong>of</strong>a <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He married<br />

Mele Mafi.<br />

2) Viliami Kafoa, born August 12, 1930 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tpu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He died on Feb 1931.


3) <strong>Tonga</strong> Lisiua Kafoa, born Nov. 1, 1932 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. Married Seini.<br />

4) Vika Kaufusi Kafoa, born Aug. 16, 1935 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. died on Sept 15, 1936.<br />

5) Kitekeitamana’isia Kafoa, born August 24, 1938 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

6) ‘Atisalakapu Kafoa, born May 12, 1940 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. married Tevita ‘Ata’ata.<br />

7) Kitione Vaka Kafoa, born June 12, 1942 in Tokomolo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He married Losa.<br />

8) Mosese Latu Kafoa born March 3, 1945 in Tokomolo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

9) Maumi-‘O-Lakepa Kafoa born Oct 6, 1947 in Tokomolo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. Married Godney.<br />

10) Lesieli Lisia Kafoa, born Sept 24, 1949 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu . Died on Feb 5, 1960.<br />

2) Lavinia Lauaki, born Nov 25, 1936, in Lapaha <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. She married Siope Moala.<br />

3) Mele Finau, born Dec 29, 1937 in Tokomololo <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. She married Soakai.<br />

4) Lilika Kihetau, born Nov 18, 1939 in Lapaha <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. Died as an Infant.<br />

5) Sovea Lauaki, born Jan 24, 1941 in Lapaha <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. Died as an infant.<br />

6. Sovea Lauaki II born Sept 18, 1942 Lapaha, <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. Married Lione.<br />

7) Lopeti Lauaki born April 25, 1944 in Lapaha <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. Married Solia.<br />

10) Siupeli Lauaki, born May 27, 1949 in Lapaha Tongtapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He died on April 19,1958.<br />

11) Lineni Lauaki, born November 15, 1950 in Lapaha <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

12) Fotu Lauaki, born March 18, 1952 in Lapaha <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

13) Meleane Finau, born January 18, 1955 in Lapaha <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> Semisi ‘Iongi’s children is Unita ‘Iongi. She only had one child, his name is T<strong>of</strong>ua<br />

‘Iongi.<br />

Kitione Vaka ‘Iongi, he married Pueki Tuitu’u. Their children are as follow.<br />

1) (M) Poini ‘Iongi, married a woman name Fotu’aika.<br />

2) (F)Manu, married a man name Vaka Sioeli.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the younger daughter <strong>of</strong> Semisi ‘Iongi name ‘Alisi ‘Ufitonga ‘Iongi, married Henele<br />

Tau’aho Maile. Their children are as follow.<br />

1) (M) Uaitemata Maile, he died at a very young age.<br />

2) Makeleta Maile, married to Ngalongalo.<br />

3) ‘Amileti Maile<br />

4) Viliami Puaui Maile, died as an infant.<br />

Semisi ‘Iongi’s parents are, father Henele Milo ‘Iongi and his mother Ane Mafi. Their children<br />

are as follow.<br />

1) (M) <strong>Sione</strong> Loutalo ‘Iongi, born about 1881 in Pea <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.. He married a woman<br />

name Mele Hala’api ‘api. He died September 17, 1953.<br />

2) Viliami Kuli ‘Iongi, he is <strong>Sione</strong> Loutalo ‘Iongi’s twin brother, also born about 1881 in Pea<br />

<strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. Viliami Kuli ‘Iongi married a woman name Lupe.<br />

3) Semisi ‘Iongi, born about 1883 in Pea <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He married Mele Musie.<br />

4) Henele Tongia ‘Iongi, born about 1885 in Pea <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He married Lolie.<br />

5) (M) T<strong>of</strong>ua-‘i-Pangai ‘Iongi, born abt. 1888 in Pea <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He died in 1900.<br />

The oldest child <strong>of</strong> these children is Viliami Kuli who was the twin brother <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sione</strong> Loutalo.<br />

And Viliami Kuli’s wife is Lupe.<br />

Viliami Kuli and Lupe’s children are as follow.<br />

1) (M) <strong>Sione</strong> ‘Iongi, born in Ha’akame.<br />

2) Lesieli Lesila<br />

3) Ane Mafi, all <strong>of</strong> those died in their infancy, along with 4. Katalia.<br />

(M) Henele Tongia ‘Iongi’s children are as follow.<br />

These are Henele Milo ‘Iongi parents. Father Mr. ‘Iongi he married a woman name Vilivili in<br />

Samoa.<br />

Mr. ‘Iongi and Vilivili children are as follow.<br />

2) Lukelo<br />

Mr. ‘Iongi came to ‘Eua and was married again and had these children. They are as follow<br />

2) Siale ‘Iongi<br />

Vilivili’s father is Talanoa and her mother is Takala, from Samoa.<br />

Mr. ‘Iongi’s parents is Salesi ‘Iongi (father) from Britain, and the rest I do not have any more<br />

information <strong>of</strong> them.<br />

Ane Mafi’s father is <strong>Sione</strong> Langi and her mother is ‘Alisi ‘Ufitonga.<br />

The children <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sione</strong> Langi and ‘Alisi ‘Ufitonga are as follow.<br />

1) (M) Viliami Langi, born abt 1855, in Pea, <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. He died about 1895. He married<br />

Maile.<br />

2) (M) Panepasa Langi, born about 1857 in Pea <strong>Tonga</strong>taput <strong>Tonga</strong>. He died about 1918<br />

3.(F) Ane Mafi Langi, born abt. 1859, married to Henele Milo ‘Iongi<br />

3) (M)Kitione Vaka Langi, born abt. 1861 in Pea <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu. He died abt 1938, married<br />

Nanise.<br />

4) (M)‘Usaia Langi, born about 1863 in Pea <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>. He died about 1869.<br />

5) (F)Lesila Langi, born about 1865 in Pea <strong>Tonga</strong>tapu <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

<strong>Sione</strong> Langi’s father is <strong>Sione</strong> Hafoka, and his mother is Mele Fakatoumafi.<br />

‘Alisi ‘Ufitonga’s father is Filiki and her mother is Lepolo.<br />

This is all <strong>of</strong> the inforation I have.<br />

Mele Musie’s father is Mateo Teu and her mother is Mele Finau. Their ch<br />

ildren are as follow.<br />

2) Fusi Liu.<br />

Mateo Teu’s father is Tapu Suka and his mother is Popua.


These are Mele Finau’s parents, her father is Samuela and her mother is Lesieli Lesila.<br />

KM - <strong>Sione</strong> ‘Iongi thank you for being here.<br />

SI - Thank you for coming to do the work.<br />

KM - This is the second time we are having our interview. Do you remember your age?<br />

SI - I am 51 years old.<br />

KM - Do you remember your father’s full name?<br />

SI - Yes, his full name is Semisi ‘Iongi.<br />

KM - What is your mother’s full name?<br />

SI - Her full name is Mele Musie Teu.<br />

KM - Is Musie still alive.<br />

SI - No, she just passed away this year.


KM - What month?<br />

SI - On May on Mothers Day that’s when she died.<br />

KM - Yes, how are you related to ‘Iunita?<br />

SI - ‘Iunita is my sister.<br />

KM - Do you know her husband’s name?<br />

SI - Yes, her husband’s name is ‘Ilaisa Manufekai.<br />

KM - <strong>Sione</strong>, from where?<br />

SI - From Pelehake.<br />

KM - Good, who is Semisi ‘Iongi’s father?<br />

SI - His name is Henele Milo ‘Iongi<br />

KM.- Who is Henele Milo ‘Iongi’s father?<br />

SI - He is a white man name Mr. ‘Iongi.<br />

KM - Who was Mr. ‘Iongi’s father?<br />

SI - His name is Salesi ‘Iongi<br />

KM - Where is Salesi ‘Iongi from?<br />

SI - From Britain.<br />

KM - How did your grandfather come to <strong>Tonga</strong>?<br />

SI - I guess he was exploring and he ended up in Samoa and that is where he had his son, Henele<br />

Milo ‘Iongi and another son name Lukelo. He wanted to continue his explore to search out<br />

the Islands and that is how he came here to <strong>Tonga</strong>.<br />

KM - Good, does Henele Milo ‘Iongi have many decedents?<br />

SI - Yes there are many.<br />

KM - Do they use this family name, ‘Iongi?<br />

SI - Yes, this name is well known throughout <strong>Tonga</strong>. The ‘Iongi name is from one family. But<br />

there is another ‘Iongi in Nukunuku the name was given to them by Semisi ‘Iongi in Fasi,<br />

but they are not members <strong>of</strong> this family.<br />

KM - Yes, there is a man that plays football with the name.<br />

SI - Yes.<br />

KM - So this is not their family name?<br />

SI - No.<br />

KM - Good, who is Mele Musie’s father?<br />

SI - His name is Mateo Teu.<br />

KM - Is Mateo Teu from Tokomololo or Pea?<br />

SI - No, he is from Halaliku and Ha’asisni and that area.<br />

KM - Who is Mateo Teu’s parents?<br />

SI - The father is Tapu Suka and his mother is Popua.<br />

KM - From Halaliku?<br />

SI - Yes.<br />

KM - Good, what is the name <strong>of</strong> your oldest son?<br />

SI - His name is <strong>Sione</strong> Fa’apulia ‘Iongi.<br />

KM - Is <strong>Sione</strong> married?<br />

SI - Yes, he is married with a woman name Melenaite from ‘Otea Vava’u.<br />

KM - Who is Melenaite’s parents?<br />

SI - Her father is ‘Aisake Likiliki, her mother is Laumanu.<br />

KM - Do you have any children that have died?


SI - 2 boys and 1 girl.<br />

KM - Did they die at a very young age?<br />

SI - The 2 boys died very young and my daughter died when she was about 14 or 15.<br />

KM - Good, Did Lesila have any brothers or sisters?<br />

SI - Yes, she did have siblings.<br />

KM - What about Samuela, Lesila’s husband, did he have a lot <strong>of</strong> brothers and sisters?<br />

SI - Yes, but they weren’t as many as Lesila’s brothers and sisters.<br />

KM - Good, where is Samuela from?<br />

SI - He is from Halaliku, from Vaotu’u. I think he is originally from Vaotu’u.<br />

KM - Yes, so his father’s name is Tongotea.?<br />

SI - Yes<br />

KM - Is it a noble name or was it a given name?<br />

SI - It is a noble name, but his real name is Naisa and he is called Naisa Tongotea..<br />

KM - Is that the name <strong>of</strong> Samuela’s father?<br />

SI - Yes.<br />

KM - Good, do you have any other information <strong>of</strong> Naisa Tongotea’s parents?<br />

SI - No, I cannot remember, it is shown in my genealogy but I have not receive it.<br />

KM - Yes, what about Lesieli Kaipa, do you have any information on the rest <strong>of</strong> her linage?<br />

SI - No,<br />

KM - Who was Halaifonua’s father?<br />

SI - ‘Ita’aehau<br />

KM - This ‘Ita’aehau is it the same name as the ones in Ha’akame?<br />

SI - Yes<br />

KM - What is your relations with that ‘Ita’aehau?<br />

SI - He was my mother’s, mother’s brother.<br />

KM - Your very closely related.<br />

SI - Yes<br />

KM - Mele, ‘Ita’aehau’s wife, do you know where she is from?<br />

SI - I don’t really know, but I think she is from Ha’akame.<br />

KM - Good, why did you all move here to ‘Eua?<br />

SI - We couldn’t find a piece <strong>of</strong> land in Tokomololo so we moved here to find a piece <strong>of</strong> land<br />

because I have so many children.<br />

KM - Good, is there anything else you would like to tell or explain about your family?<br />

SI - No.<br />

KM Is this all <strong>of</strong> the information that you know regarding your family?<br />

SI This is all <strong>of</strong> the information <strong>of</strong> my family that I have researched and found.<br />
