Setting up with two cameras and a boom mic, Ian Marquand walked in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Westview Center over and over and over again.<br />

Some <str<strong>on</strong>g>shot</str<strong>on</strong>g>s were soft <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> focus. O<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>shot</str<strong>on</strong>g>s weren't zoomed out far enough. O<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs were just shaky.<br />

But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y wanted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get things just right. After all, what a group of <str<strong>on</strong>g>MAPS</str<strong>on</strong>g> Media Institute <str<strong>on</strong>g>students</str<strong>on</strong>g> were working <strong>on</strong> Wednesday<br />

after school will be broadcast across all of M<strong>on</strong>tana.<br />

The state will be getting a taste of what <str<strong>on</strong>g>MAPS</str<strong>on</strong>g> has <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> offer when its <str<strong>on</strong>g>documentary</str<strong>on</strong>g> - "After <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bell: Inside <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>MAPS</str<strong>on</strong>g> Media<br />

Institute" - <str<strong>on</strong>g>air</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>PBS</strong> next m<strong>on</strong>th, hosted by Marquand, a <str<strong>on</strong>g>MAPS</str<strong>on</strong>g> instruc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r.<br />

The 26-minute program will <str<strong>on</strong>g>air</str<strong>on</strong>g> April 16 at 5 p.m., again <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next day at 10:30 a.m. and a third time <strong>on</strong> May 27 at 11:30 a.m.<br />

Cody Tredik, a junior at Hamil<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n High School, was helping out <strong>on</strong> Wednesday's shoot.<br />

"I'm what's called a grip. I'm <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extra hand <strong>on</strong> set that plugs stuff in, carries things around, that sort of stuff," Tredik said.<br />

This is Tredik's first year with <str<strong>on</strong>g>MAPS</str<strong>on</strong>g>. He is currently taking <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> film class. He said he's enjoyed his time working <strong>on</strong> "After <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Bell."<br />

"It's really fun and we're going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> see it <strong>on</strong> <strong>PBS</strong>, which is really cool," Tredik said. "The payoff is getting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> see it <strong>on</strong> TV."<br />

The idea of putting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r a look in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> after-school program has been in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> works for a couple of years, according <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

executive direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Peter Rosten.<br />

"Finally, this year we felt comfortable doing it," Rosten said.<br />

A close <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> half-hour <str<strong>on</strong>g>documentary</str<strong>on</strong>g> isn't anything new for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se <str<strong>on</strong>g>students</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Rosten said. They created a film for this year's Big Sky<br />

Documentary Film Festival, as well as ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>documentary</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> smoking that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> U.S. Centers for Disease C<strong>on</strong>trol picked up and<br />

ran nati<strong>on</strong>ally, Rosten said.<br />

"We've always d<strong>on</strong>e short-form and l<strong>on</strong>g-form. Some of it has been for local c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>, some for state and some for nati<strong>on</strong>al,"<br />

he said.<br />

"After <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bell" will give a brief his<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>MAPS</str<strong>on</strong>g> Institute and present its business model, which is "professi<strong>on</strong>al instruc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs<br />

teaching kids," Rosten said.<br />

The show will also take <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> audience through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> institute's four curriculum secti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Most importantly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>documentary</str<strong>on</strong>g> will introduce viewers <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> kids behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scenes, showing examples of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir course work<br />

and professi<strong>on</strong>al projects.<br />

"The kids are driving <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show in terms of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interviews and narrative," Rosten said. "We hope we can create <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> message that<br />

doing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own, pers<strong>on</strong>al (public service announcements) will transiti<strong>on</strong> in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> client-based work."<br />

The project was given <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> go-ahead by <strong>PBS</strong> about a m<strong>on</strong>th ago, Rosten said. Since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, <str<strong>on</strong>g>students</str<strong>on</strong>g> started putting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>

c<strong>on</strong>tent as well as shooting promos for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> show.<br />

On Wednesday, a few <str<strong>on</strong>g>students</str<strong>on</strong>g> helped shoot wrap-arounds and interviews with Marquand and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir fellow <str<strong>on</strong>g>students</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Once everything has been <str<strong>on</strong>g>shot</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Rosten said it will move <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> editing process, where <str<strong>on</strong>g>students</str<strong>on</strong>g> will whittle away at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> film,<br />

eventually getting it down <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> 26 minutes.<br />

"We have <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make some really hard decisi<strong>on</strong>s fast," Rosten said.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>MAPS</str<strong>on</strong>g> will deliver its final product <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>PBS</strong> a week before <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>documentary</str<strong>on</strong>g> is set <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>air</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
