A RELIGION OF ONE’S OWN
A Sacred Way of Life in a Secular World
Thomas Moore
The New York Times bestselling author
and trusted spiritual adviser’s follow-up
to his classic, Care of the Soul
Something essential is missing from modern life. Many who’ve turned away from
religious institutions—and others who have lived wholly without religion—hunger
for more than what contemporary secular life has to offer but are reluctant to follow
organized religion’s often inflexible path to spirituality. In A Religion of One’s Own,
bestselling author and former monk Thomas Moore explores the myriad possibilities
of creating a personal spiritual style, either inside or outside formal religion.
In A Religion of One’s Own, Moore expands on the topics he first explored shortly
after leaving the monastery. He recounts the benefits of contemplative living that he
learned during his twelve years as a monk but also the more original and imaginative
spirituality that he later developed and embraced in his secular life. He shares
stories of others who are creating their own path: a former football player now on a
spiritual quest with the Pueblo Indians, a friend who makes a meditative practice of
floral arrangements, and a well-known classical pianist whose audiences sometimes
describe having a mystical experience while listening to her performances. Moore
weaves their experiences with the wisdom of philosophers, writers, and artists who
have rejected materialism and infused their secular lives with transcendence.
At a time when so many feel disillusioned with or detached from organized
religion yet long for a way to move beyond an exclusively materialistic, rational
lifestyle, A Religion of One’s Own points the way to creating an amplified inner life and
a world of greater purpose, meaning, and reflection.
✦ Thomas Moore’s Care of the Soul sold more than a million copies and was on the
New York Times bestseller list for forty-four weeks, and Dark Nights of the Soul was
a national bestseller that has sold more than 100,000 copies in hardcover and
paperback since its publication in 2004.
✦ He has been published in more than twenty countries and in twenty-three
languages.
SEX AFTER . . .
Women Share How Intimacy Changes as Life Changes
Iris Krasnow
The bestselling author of The Secret Lives
of Wives offers a refreshingly straightforward
guide to enjoying a long, satisfying sex life.
Women of the baby boomer generation know and trust Iris Krasnow as a writer who
speaks candidly to the issues that concern them most. In the months following the
publication of her most recent book, The Secret Lives of Wives, Krasnow addressed
thousands of women, and she discovered that two subjects dominated her audiences’
conversations: sex and change. Whether women are worried about marriage and
divorce or illness and death, they’re all asking: “How do I handle the shifts in my
sexuality caused by these events?” Sex After. . . holds the answers to everything from
regaining sexual confidence after childbirth and breast cancer to navigating the
dating scene in senior communities.
Filled with edgy and honest stories of carnal challenge and triumph from
women of all backgrounds and life stages, Sex After. . . is Krasnow’s signature take on
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask—during all of
life’s passages. Krasnow is a media and lecture tour favorite, and readers—whether in
the heat of an initial can’t-eat-can’t-sleep attraction or rounding the corner to their
sixtieth anniversary—will applaud her eye-opening perspectives on the one issue that
can change lives for better or worse like nothing else.
✦ Iris Krasnow’s Huffington Post blog posts rank among the top ten most read and
commented on in the site’s history.
✦ She has appeared on Oprah, Today, Good Morning America, CBS’s The Early Show,
CNN, FOX News, and NPR’s All Things Considered.
✦ Krasnow is a popular keynote speaker with women’s groups and on the Jewish
Book Club circuit, addressing more than a thousand women a month.
EXCERPT | We all want to have great sex because we think everyone else is
having great sex, a myth perpetuated by an overly sexualized media and
culture that spotlights svelte, stunning, perfect women who have no trouble
bedding down the hunkiest of bed partners. In this book you will discover the
real deal—that there is no perfect sex, because there are no perfect people.
From the perils of hooking up among twentysomethings to the dating
landscape widows are facing in senior communities, where STDs are on the
rise, the best way to learn how to navigate our own intimate relationships is
to hear from others who have pushed through the obstacles we can expect
along the way. There is plenty of prescriptive wisdom on these pages from
dozens of women of all ages—as well as leading sex researchers such as Dr.
Ruth—on how intimacy evolves after college, the honeymoon, pregnancy,
midlife malaise, adultery, menopause, cancer or AIDS, Viagra, and widowhood.
Every woman I talk to agrees: There is no such thing as “just sex.” Sexual
success hinges on self-esteem and passion of the soul, and it changes as life
changes. The good news is that it often gets better. However varied they are
in life experiences, each of my sources has learned—often in a tough way—
that the ability to sustain intimacy and sexual pleasure is vital to the survival
of relationships.
OWN YOUR GAME
How to Use Your Mind to Play Winning Golf
Dave Stockton with Matthew Rudy
A private strategy session with the Pro
Tour’s hottest coach, in this ultimate
guide to golf’s mental game
Credited with transforming world-class golfers like Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson,
Annika Sorenstam, and Yani Tseng, Dave Stockton is one of the most sought-after
coaches in golf. The hallmark of his coaching, set forth in the bestsellers Unconscious
Putting and Unconscious Scoring, is that “trying doesn’t work”—the key to better shots
is letting the unconscious mind take over.
In Own Your Game, Stockton re-creates the experience of riding eighteen holes
with him at one of his highly sought-after corporate outings. According to Stockton,
the mental game makes up 90% of a golfer’s score, and he explains how any player can
learn to use his or her mind more effectively. Rather than having them try to imitate
the pros, Stockton gives amateur golfers the tools and the freedom to play better with
the swing they already have. Portable, conversational, practical—and complete with
a mini-guide to playing business golf with colleagues and clients—Own Your Game is
the ultimate “soft skills” companion for players of all levels.
✦ Foreword by Lt. Col. Ronald Ray, US Army Medal of Honor winner, and preface by
Paul Azinger, major championship winner and 2008 Ryder Cup captain
✦ An enhanced e-book version will feature sixty minutes of bonus instructional
video, featuring Stockton’s most compelling stories and strategies.
✦ Published in time for the Masters Tournament and the beginning of golf season
THE REMEDY
Robert Koch, Arthur Conan Doyle, and the Quest to Cure TB
Thomas Goetz
The riveting history of the world’s most lethal
disease, the two men whose lives it tragically
intertwined, and the birth of medical science
In 1875, tuberculosis was the deadliest disease in the world, accountable for a third
of all deaths. A diagnosis of TB—often called consumption—was a death sentence.
Then, in a triumph of medical science, a German doctor named Robert Koch deployed
an unprecedented scientific rigor to discover the bacteria that caused TB and soon
embarked on a remedy—a remedy that would be his undoing.
When Koch announced he’d found a cure, Arthur Conan Doyle, then a small-town
doctor in England and sometime writer, went to Berlin to cover the event. Touring the
ward of reportedly cured patients, he was horrified. Koch’s “remedy” was either sloppy
science or outright fraud.
But to those desperate for relief, Koch’s cure was worth the risk. As Europe’s
consumptives descended upon Berlin, Conan Doyle returned to England to become a
writer, not a scientist. But he brought Koch’s scientific methods to the masses through
the character of Sherlock Holmes.
Capturing the moment when mystery and magic began to yield to science, The
Remedy chronicles the stunning story of how the germ theory of disease became fact,
how two men of ambition were emboldened to reach for something more, and how
scientific discoveries evolve into social truths.
EXCERPT | In nineteenth-century Europe and the United States, consumption was the most
common of all ways to die. Tuberculosis was a chameleon of diseases, easily mistaken or
dismissed as something else for years. Even when diagnosed properly, it was a languid, almost
casual disease—the first chronic disease, in many respects. As such, few doctors believed that
there could be anything contagious about it whatsoever. Rather, it seemed largely hereditary,
passed along in families with weak constitutions by nature.
As for treatments, there was no end of them: tonics and salves and Dr. Williams’s cod liver
oil. In truth, there was no true remedy for tuberculosis, no tonic that would dispatch the
disease and restore the individual. Some doctors despaired that there would ever be a cure
for the disease and felt that any offer of treatments was deceitful and unethical. They chose
not to treat it as a disease but rather as a fact of life, counseling patients to learn to live with
the condition as long as they might. Rather than scrounge for a cure, they should reconcile
themselves to the fact that their fate had been cast. Whether brought on by God or family,
consumption was their lot.
SHOWTIME
Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s
Jeff Pearlman
The New York Times bestselling author of Sweetness
delivers the first all-encompassing account of
the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, one of professional
sports’ most-revered—and dominant—dynasties.
The Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s personified the flamboyance and excess of the
decade over which they reigned. Beginning with the arrival of Earvin “Magic” Johnson
as the number-one overall pick of the 1979 draft, the Lakers played basketball with
gusto and pizzazz, unleashing their famed “Showtime” run-and-gun style on a league
unprepared for their speed and ferocity—and became the most captivating show
in sports and, arguably, in all-around American entertainment. The Lakers’ roster
overflowed with exciting all-star-caliber players, including center Kareem Abdul-
Jabbar, and they were led by the incomparable Pat Riley, known for his slicked-back
hair, his Armani suits, and his arrogant strut. Hollywood’s biggest celebrities lined the
court and gorgeous women flocked to the arena. Best of all, the team was a winner.
Between 1980 and 1991, the Lakers played in an unmatched nine NBA championship
series, capturing five of them.
Bestselling sportswriter Jeff Pearlman draws from almost three hundred
interviews to take the first full measure of the Lakers’ epic Showtime era. A dazzling
account of one of America’s greatest sports sagas, Showtime is packed with indelible
characters, vicious rivalries, and jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes stories of the
players’ decadent Hollywood lifestyles. From the Showtime era’s remarkable rise to its
tragic end—marked by Magic Johnson’s 1991 announcement that he had contracted
HIV— Showtime is a gripping narrative of sports, celebrity, and 1980s-style excess.
✦ Jeff Pearlman is the author of three New York Times bestsellers: Sweetness, Boys Will
Be Boys, and The Bad Guys Won!.
SUCCESS THROUGH STILLNESS
The Simplest Path to Meditation
Russell Simmons with Chris Morrow
Master entrepreneur, original hip-hop mogul, and
New York Times bestselling author Russell Simmons
shares the most fundamental key to success—
meditation—and guides readers to use stillness
as a powerful tool to access their potential.
In the New York Times bestseller Super Rich, Russell Simmons proved that to be
rich is more than just having money in the bank—wealth is about balance, joy, and
conscientious living.
In Success Through Stillness, Simmons shows the connection between inner peace
and outward success through interviews with other successful leaders in various
industries, and how learning to be still has been instrumental in his own career.
Simmons attributes his meditation practice with changing his life for the better and
says that there is no “bad” way to meditate, only different forms for different people.
In this highly anticipated new book, Russell Simmons guides readers into finding
greater clarity and focus and explains how to be healthier in both mind and body.
Simmons breaks down what he’s learned from masters of meditation to create a guide
that is accessible to those unfamiliar with the practice.
EVERY DAY IS GAME DAY
The Proven System of Elite Performance to Win All Day, Every Day
Mark Verstegen and Pete Williams
Noted sports performance expert and bestselling
author of Core Performance, Verstegen reveals
the training program he uses with elite athletes
and U.S. Special Operations Forces.
As founder and president of Athletes’ Performance, Mark Verstegen has trained
the world’s top athletes in sports including the NFL, Major League Baseball, and
worldwide soccer powers, along with the most elite “tactical athletes”—U.S. Special
Operations Forces personnel.
More than a decade ago, Verstegen’s groundbreaking book Core Performance
revolutionized the fitness industry and made core conditioning and functional
training mainstream. In his new book, Verstegen presents his most hardcore program
yet: a demanding system that challenges readers to perform at the highest level.
Borrowing heavily from his regimens used by the military and NFL-combine
hopefuls, Verstegen breaks the system down into tough but easy-to-follow workouts
that help readers become faster, more explosive, and more powerful while moving
with greater efficiency and with far less potential for injury. If you’ve ever wanted to
perform like the top sports champions or elite fighting forces, this is the book for you.
✦ Mark Verstegen and his training methods have been profiled in USA Today, The
New York Times, Sports Illustrated, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal,
Men’s Health, Fast Company, ESPN The Magazine, CNN.com, Forbes.com, and many
more publications.
✦ Verstegen is the Director of Performance for the NFL Players Association and an
adviser to Adidas, EAS, SKLZ, Keiser, Axon Sports, and other leading performanceoriented
companies.
✦ He is a popular speaker for organizations such as the American College of Sports
Medicine, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association, as well as
many corporations.
THE WAHLS PROTOCOL
How a Physician Went from Wheelchair to Walking and Beat
Progressive MS Using Functional Medicine and Paleo Principles
Terry Wahls, M.D. with Eve Adamson
An integrative approach to healing chronic
auto-immune conditions by a doctor, researcher,
and sufferer of progressive multiple sclerosis
Like many physicians, Dr. Terry Wahls focused on treating her patients’ ailments with
drugs or surgical procedures—until she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000.
Within three years, her back and stomach muscles had weakened to the point where
she needed a tilt-recline wheelchair. Conventional medical treatments were failing
her, and she feared that she would be bedridden for the rest of her life.
Dr. Wahls began studying the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain
biology, and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty
acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements. Dr. Wahls adopted
the nutrient-rich paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of
neuromuscular stimulation. First, she walked slowly, then steadily, and then she biked
eighteen miles in a single day. In November 2011, Dr. Wahls shared her remarkable
recovery in a TEDx talk that immediately went viral. Now, in The Wahls Protocol, she
reveals the details of the protocol that allowed her to reverse many of her symptoms,
get back to her life, and embark on a new mission: to help others suffering from the
ravages of multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions.
✦ More than two million people suffer from MS or similar chronic autoimmune
diseases. Dr. Wahls separates the diet into three different levels depending upon
the reader’s need. Filled with inspirational case studies from Dr. Wahls’s clinical
trials—and written with both a patient’s emotional insight and a doctor’s scientific
rigor—The Wahls Protocol answers the call for a clear prescriptive guide to healing
disease through functional medicine, intense nutrition, and exercise.
✦ Dr. Terry Wahls’s TEDx lecture, “Minding Your Mitochondria,” was posted to
YouTube and has received more than one million page views.
✦ Wahls’s website receives close to 35,000 views each month and she has an email
list of more than 30,000 subscribers.
RUN, DON’T WALK
The Curious and Chaotic Life of a Physical Therapist
Inside Walter Reed Army Medical Center
Adele Levine, P.T.
M*A*S*H meets Scrubs in a sharply observant,
darkly funny, and unique debut memoir.
In her six years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Adele Levine rehabilitated
soldiers admitted in worse and worse shape. As body armor and advanced surgical
techniques helped save the lives—if not the limbs—of American soldiers fighting
in Afghanistan and Iraq, Walter Reed quickly became the world leader in amputee
rehabilitation. But no matter the injury, physical therapy began the moment the
soldiers emerged from surgery.
With dazzling storytelling, Run, Don’t Walk introduces a motley array of oddball
characters: Jim, a retired lieutenant colonel who enters a marathon with absolutely
no training; Big Sexy, an awkward, grim prosthetist; Major Crazy, a physical therapist
who worries about what to do should a 250-passenger plane take out a wing of the
hospital—and Levine’s toughest patient, the wild, defiant Cosmo, who comes in with
one leg amputated and the other shattered.
Entertaining, engrossing, and ultimately inspiring, Run, Don’t Walk is a fascinating
look into a hidden world.
✦ There are 80,000 physical therapists at work in the United States, and Levine is the
first to detail the field’s challenges and rewards.
EXCERPT | I have no idea how to teach anyone to swim, but I’m a physical
therapist, which in the patients’ eyes puts me on the same level as Genghis
Khan. So when I suggested everyone get out of their wheelchairs and into the
pool, no one argued with me.
We learned some surprising things: It is impossible for a person who is
missing both legs to sink; you can do back flips off the side of the pool using
just your arms to spring you up; and even if you are a triple amputee, missing
both legs and an arm, you can pull yourself easily and gracefully across the
pool with your one good arm.
We were a motley crew. I was convinced our time at the pool was limited.
In addition to their obvious battle injuries, most of the patients had big, semioffensive
tattoos. They were loud and boisterous and left their prosthetic legs
and arms lying around the pool deck. In between sets, they’d splash and dunk
each other under the water and generally create inappropriate pool chaos.
But no one ever got mad at us. Instead, a strange thing began to happen.
People started to swim with us. They’d get out of their lane and enthusiastically
hop in ours.
“Man!” they would say to the nearest soldier, “you are doing a good job. You
keep on swimming! You can do this!”
ADELE LEVINE, P.T. worked at Walter
Reed Army Medical Center from 2005 until
2011, after which she was transferred
to National Naval Medical Center
(renamed Walter Reed National Military
Medical Center), where she continues to
rehabilitate war amputees. She is also an
enthusiastic long-distance swimmer. She
lives in Wheaton, Maryland.
JIM CRAMER’S
GET RICH CAREFULLY
James J. Cramer
The personal finance book of the year—Mad Money
and CNBC star Jim Cramer’s guide to high-yield/
low-risk investing in a recovering economy.
Tired of false promises about getting rich quickly, promises that lead to reckless
decisions, the stepping stones to the poorhouse? How about trying something
different? How about going for lasting wealth based on thirty-five years’ worth of
insights from Jim Cramer, a grizzled stock veteran and host of CNBC’s Mad Money
with Jim Cramer . . . How about get rich carefully?
Jim Cramer’s Get Rich Carefully gives you the plans you need to make big money
without taking big risks. Drawing on his unparalleled knowledge of both the stock
market and about the mistakes and successes he’s made on the way to his own
fortune, Cramer explains to you, in plain English, why you can get rich in a prudent,
methodical way, as long as you start now. In his own inimitable style, Cramer lays it on
the line, no waffling, no on-the-one-hand-or-the-other, just the straight stuff you need
to get wealthy—everything from the best long-term investing themes to the discipline
you need to exploit them. Jim Cramer’s Get Rich Carefully may be the most invaluable
book savers and investors could ever hope for: a tell-all that tells you all you need to
know to turn your savings into real, lasting wealth in a practical and, yes, because it’s
Cramer, readable and entertaining fashion.
✦ Jim Cramer is television's top rated financial guru. Mad Money with Jim Cramer airs
three times a day on CNBC and NBC, and he also appears daily on CNBC’s Squawk
on the Street.
✦ Five of Cramer's previous financial advice books have been major national
bestsellers, as was his memoir, Confessions of a Street Addict, considered a Wall
Street classic.
✦ Cramer is NBC News' go to commentator/analyst for all breaking stock market
news; he appears regularly on the Today show and on the NBC Nightly News.
✦ Cramer’s brand has never been stronger: with the market recovering from the
Great Recession, small investors have returned to his audience, he is being heavily
promoted by Comcast and his electronic presence, on television and on the
Internet, is ubiquitous.
YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN
James Carville and Mary Matalin
Twenty-years after their bestselling, groundbreaking All’s
Fair: Love, War, and Running for President, James Carville
and Mary Matalin return with a look at how they—and
America—have changed in the last two decades.
James Carville and Mary Matalin, the nation’s best-known, most annoying, intensely
rabid, romantically mismatched and provocative political couple, are writing their
first book together since 1994. Their decision to collaborate proves that, after twenty
years of marriage, they can still manage to agree on one thing.
You Can Go Home Again traces the Carville/Matalin story from the end of the
1992 presidential campaign—where James managed Bill Clinton’s electoral triumph
while Mary suffered defeat as George H. W. Bush’s key strategist—till now. The new
book is written in two alternating and distinct voices and describes the personal and
public histories of the last twenty years. Matalin’s focus is on the interwoven personal
and political events of a transformational age; issues and insights from her kitchen
table to the White House Cabinet room on family, faith, friends, and foreign enemies.
Carville’s concentration is politics—the triumphant and troubled Clinton-era, George
Bush’s complicated presidency, the election of Barack Obama, and the rise of the
corrosive partisanship that dominates political life in Washington today. Both of
them reflect on raising young girls in the pressure cooker of the nation’s capital and
the family’s move to New Orleans, post-Katrina, where their efforts to rebuild and
promote the city has become a central part of their lives—and a poignant metaphor
for moving America forward.
All told—the memoir of the year.
✦ Carville’s Democratic liberal politics and Matalin’s conservative GOP positions have
long made for great debates and intriguing television: How can this outspoken,
sharp-elbowed pair share a bedroom together, let alone a TV studio?
✦ Carville and Matalin have been involved directly or as advisers or commentators
on national campaigns since Bill Clinton’s victory over George H. W. Bush in 1992;
they bring insight and anecdotes to these many battles.
✦ The pair are regulars on all the major network news shows; their many joint
speaking appearances are large-hall sellouts.
✦ Though both Carville and Matalin have published books solo, this is their first joint
effort since 1994.
intertwined on an Earth far different from their own.
Without warning, the world comes to an end for Hannah and Amanda Given. The
sky looms frigid white, and every airplane crashes to the ground. But the sisters
are saved by three eerily beautiful strangers, who force mysterious silver bracelets
onto their wrists. Within minutes, the sky comes down in a crushing sheet of light
and everything around them is gone. Shielded from the devastation by their silver
adornments, they suddenly find themselves elsewhere—on a bizarre alternate Earth,
where restaurants move through the air like flying saucers and time is manipulated by
common household appliances.
Soon Hannah and Amanda are joined by four other survivors from their world. At
risk from enemies they never knew they had and afflicted with extraordinary abilities
they never wanted, the sisters and their new companions band together on an epic
journey to track down the one man who can help them—before time runs out.
✦ The pages of this white-hot novel practically turn themselves. The Flight of the
Silvers is packed from cover to cover with action, romance, humor, and
time-bending plot twists.
✦ This likable group of remarkable characters will appeal to fans of Stephen King’s
Under the Dome, Dean Koontz’s Strangers, and Suzanne Collins’s
The Hunger Games.
EXCERPT | They rounded the corner, turning north onto 13th Street. Just one block away,
beyond all the cordons and emergency lights, stood the broken tail cone of a jumbo jet.
The buildings around it were devastated with ash and debris. One apartment complex had
crumbled to rubble.
Hannah covered her mouth. “Oh my God.”
More than a hundred thousand planes, jets, and helicopters had been up in the air seven
hours ago, when all the world’s engines fell still. A third of them plummeted into water.
Another third hit the hard empty spaces between human life. The final third just hit hard.
Gaping through her fingers, Hannah stared at the tall gray clock tower of the 12th & Imperial
Transit Center, just a hundred yards away. It was a local landmark, one she’d passed a thousand
times on her way to work. Now it had been de-clocked, decapitated. Every window on the
south side of the building was shattered.
All around her, people fretfully chattered. A stringy blond teenager brandished a transistor
radio, declaring to anyone willing to listen that he’d heard voices through the static. People
in other cities were talking about the same things. “This is happening all over,” he insisted.
“Everywhere!”
PRAISE FOR DANIEL PRICE’S SLICK
“One wild ride.”
—The Seattle Times Book Review
“Price is a natural at leading the reader through
DEEP WINTER
A Novel
Samuel W. Gailey
In this spellbindingly compelling rural noir, a
devastating murder in an isolated small town sets off an
unstoppable chain of events made more complicated—
and more dangerous—by the town’s dark secrets.
Danny, a simpleminded gentle giant, doesn’t know what to make of the body he
discovers one cold winter evening. It’s Mindy, his only friend in the small town of
Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, where most people avoid Danny, even though a childhood
tragedy left him parentless and with limited mental capabilities. Wary of the damage
he could cause with his unchecked strength, the town has labeled him as dangerous,
whether he intends to be or not. So when the local bully-turned-deputy finds Danny
with Mindy’s body, it seems obvious to everyone that the normally kindhearted man
has finally hurt someone. But Mindy’s gruesome murder and Danny’s arrest gravely
upset the delicate balance of the town order, and the violence threatens to spin out of
control as the deputy, the sheriff, and a state trooper investigate. Richly atmospheric
and ingeniously plotted, Samuel W. Gailey’s debut novel chillingly depicts a small
town where not everything is as it seems, and something sinister lurks just below the
surface.
✦ A trained screenwriter, Gailey has written an atmospheric and cinematic pageturner
that will appeal to readers of suspense and literary fiction. Its sinister and
riveting style echoes Scott Smith’s A Simple Plan, Tana French’s In the Woods, and
Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl.
✦ Gailey was raised in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, where the book is set, and he
expertly renders a captivating portrait of a mentally limited but amiable man and
the deeply flawed but complex and endearing characters that surround him.
EXCERPT | Danny clutched a small wooden, hand-carved robin figurine
in his large left hand. His hands were bigger than most—footballplayer-sized.
But Danny didn’t play football or any other games that
involved a ball because he wasn’t any good at stuff like that.
You’re too goddamn slow and too goddamn clumsy, Uncle Brett
always said.
Danny’s long fingers wrapped tightly around the wood bird,
cutting into his soft, sweaty palm hard enough to leave little crescent
moon dimples. He gazed down at the figurine, turned it over a few
times, touching the beak, the wings, the tail feathers, then placed it
beside Mindy’s head, careful not to get any of her blood on the bird.
“Made this special for your birthday. Hope you like it.”
Mindy didn’t reply. She didn’t thank him for the special gift. She
didn’t do anything but lie there in a growing puddle of her own blood.
I SEE YOU MADE AN EFFORT
Compliments, Indignities, and Survival Stories from the Edge of 50
Annabelle Gurwitch
Annabelle Gurwitch—the humorist The Washington
Post calls “hilarious” and O, The Oprah Magazine “slyly
subversive”—returns with a wickedly funny new book
chronicling the vicissitudes of turning 50.
From the coauthor (with her husband) of You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up, actress
and funnywoman Gurwitch now chronicles the indignities faced by femmes d’un
certain age. Whether falling in lust at the Genius bar, navigating the extensive—and
treacherously expensive—antiaging offerings at a department-store beauty counter,
coping with the assisted suicide of her best friend, negotiating the ins and outs of
acceptable behavior with her teenage kid, the thudding financial reality of the “nevertirement”
generation that leads her to petty theft, Gurwitch proves a smart and
hilarious writer in her prime (in so many ways). Is this the beginning of the Eileen
Fisher years? Where does one conduct an affair with a younger man? Is 50 the new
40? Or is 50 still 50?
Scorchingly honest, surreally and riotously funny, Gurwitch’s I See You Made an
Effort is the ultimate coming-of-middle-age story and a must-read for women of all
ages. Reading glasses not included.
✦ You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up (a 2011 Jewish Book Council selection) is a theatrical
production now in its third national tour. Gurwitch’s comedic memoir, Fired!, about
being fired by Woody Allen, became an acclaimed documentary.
EXCERPT | Every week, from the day I turned forty-nine, solicitations from AARP started
appearing in my email inbox. The couple pictured in those emails is dressed in matching
cotton pastel sweaters and pleated khaki Dockers. The man has his arms encircling the
woman’s waist. Is he propping her up because she’s suffering from osteoporosis, or helpfully
disguising her muffin top? The expressions on their faces can only be described as “resigned.”
The entire outfit screams, “Here, take my libido and hold it for the rest of my life, which won’t
last much longer anyway.” At a glance, I thought the email might be an ad for white-collar
prison uniforms.
EXODUS
A Memoir by the Author of Unorthodox
Deborah Feldman
Deborah Feldman, author of the explosive New York
Times–bestselling memoir Unorthodox, returns with an
extraordinary follow-up that traces her new life as an
independent young woman and single mother, and her
search for an authentic and personal Jewish identity.
When Deborah Feldman made the remarkable—and scandalous—decision to leave
her family and loveless marriage, wholly rejecting her Hasidic roots, she found herself
alienated from the only community she had ever known. Out of her experience came
the incendiary bestselling memoir Unorthodox, and just a few years later, Feldman has
emerged on the cusp of a remarkable journey of self-discovery—a journey in which
she begins her life anew, a single mother and a religious refugee, at the age of twentysix.
As a woman and as a writer, Feldman broke all the rules she was raised to live by,
and in the process has discovered a world of like-minded outcasts and misfits, bound
together in the universal struggle for self-acceptance and healing. A captivating writer
and beguiling storyteller, Feldman’s singular life has been an inspiration to countless
others everywhere.
✦ Unorthodox spent eight weeks on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction
bestseller list, reaching #13 at its height. It was also a huge e-book bestseller, and
spent eight weeks on the New York Times combined print/e-book nonfiction list,
hitting #7 in its first week.
✦ Feldman is an extraordinary speaker and natural promoter. Her emotive and
inspiring presentations bring audiences to tears—including Barbara Walters.
PRAISE FOR UNORTHODOX
“Deborah Feldman was raised in an insular, oppressive
world where she was taught that, as a woman, she wasn’t
capable of independent thought. But she found the pluck and
determination needed to make the break from that world and
has written a brave, riveting account of her journey.
Unorthodox is harrowing, yet triumphant.”
THE BIG TINY
A Built-It-Myself Memoir
Dee Williams
A graceful, inspired memoir about building a home from
scratch and discovering a true sense of self—in just 84
square feet—by Dee Williams, a pioneer in sustainable
living and the proud owner of a very tiny house.
After a heart condition felled Dee Williams in the grocery store ten years ago, she
initially threw herself headfirst back into her old life, which included a pricey threebedroom
house, overtime hours to cover homeowner bills, and a general lack of free
time. In the midst of contemplating her future, a new sense of clarity took hold: What
was all this stuff for? Mortgage payments and the time-suck of home ownership felt
like a waste, and no one has the money or desire to pack it in and live on an island
without family, friends, or health insurance.
Discovering the sustain ability movement and building her own house was just
the beginning of building a new life. Williams can now list everything she owns on one
sheet of paper, her monthly bills amount to about $8, and it takes her ten minutes to
clean the entire house. It’s allowed her to slow down, scale back, spend more time with
family and friends—and given her the freedom to head out for adventure, or watch
the clouds and sunset while drinking a beer on her (yes, tiny) front porch. Without
escaping to the wilds or going off the grid, Williams achieved a happy balance of the
normal and the radical, and created a new model for simple, practical living. Part
how-to and part why-to, The Big Tiny is a memoir not just of that “aha” moment posttrauma,
but an utterly seductive meditation on what it means to build the good life
and the right life, every day.
✦ Williams and her tiny house have been featured in Time Magazine, The New York
Times, as well as interviews on Good Morning America, NPR, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, NBC
Nightly News; publicity interest in her story remains high.
✦ We will publish on Earth Day 2014, April 22, 2014—Williams’s story exemplifies the
“green” lifestyle and sustainable, simple living.
✦ An accomplished teacher and lecturer across the country, Williams offers practical
and philosophical tips for aspiring tiny-home owners or those just looking to have
less stuff in their lives.
EXCERPT | After a month or so of playing around with the floor plans,
after examining all my little quirks and patterns, I came up with a
the blueprint I’d taped out on the living-room rug. “This will be the
I said, taking two steps forward, “is the Great Room.” I stood on the
WORST. PERSON. EVER.
A Novel
Douglas Coupland
Douglas Coupland’s gloriously filthy, side-splittingly
funny, and unforgettable new novel, his first
full-length work of fiction in four years.
Worst. Person. Ever. is a deeply unworthy book about a dreadful human being with
absolutely no redeeming social value. Raymond Gunt, in the words of the author, “is
a living, walking, talking, hot steaming pile of pure id.” He’s a B-unit cameraman who
enters an amusing downward failure spiral that takes him from London to Los Angeles
and then on to an obscure island in the Pacific, where a major American TV network
is shooting a Survivor-style reality show. Along the way, Gunt suffers multiple comas
and unjust imprisonment, is forced to reenact the “Angry Dance” from the movie
Billy Elliot, and finds himself at the center of a nuclear war. We also meet Raymond’s
upwardly failing sidekick, Neal, as well as Raymond’s ex-wife, Fiona, herself “an atomic
bomb of pain.”
Even though he really puts the “anti” in antihero, you may find Raymond Gunt an
oddly likable character.
✦ Coupland’s first novel was Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture (1991),
a worldwide bestseller. He has since published thirteen more novels (including
this book), a collection of short stories, seven nonfiction books, and a number of
dramatic works and screenplays for film and television.
✦ Coupland’s novels and visual work synthesize high and low culture, web
technology, religion, and changes in human existence caused by modern
technologies. Fans are ardent about the milieu and themes of his work.
EXCERPT | That’s my name, Raymond Gunt, and welcome to my world. I don’t know about
you, but I believe that helping others is a way of helping yourself; what goes around comes
around—good karma and all that guff. So, seeing that I’m such a good soul and all, I really don’t
know how to explain the most recent month of my life. There I was, at home in West London,
just trying to live as best as I could—karma, karma, karma, sunshine and lightness!—when,
out of nowhere, the universe delivered unto me a searing hot kebab of vasectomy leftovers
drizzled in donkey jizz.
Six Years is cause for jubilation.”
—The Huffington Post
“With Six Years, the author shows
once more how it’s done. . . . The beauty of
Coben’s craftsmanship here is how often
he can lure us into not perceiving what’s
clearly right in front of our eyes.”
—The Washington Post
“A Harlan Coben home run.
Stunningly effective. This is Coben’s
FEAR NOTHING
A Detective D.D. Warren Novel
Lisa Gardner
In #1 New York Times bestseller Lisa Gardner’s latest
pulse-pounding thriller, Detective D. D. Warren must
face a new fear as a serial killer terrorizes Boston.
My name is Dr. Adeline Glen. Due to a genetic condition, I can’t feel pain. I never have. I
never will.
The last thing Boston Detective D. D. Warren remembers is walking the crime scene
after dark. Then, a creaking floorboard, a low voice crooning in her ear. . . . She is later
told she managed to discharge her weapon three times. All she knows is that she is
seriously injured, unable to move her left arm, unable to return to work.
My sister is Shana Day, a notorious murderer who first killed at fourteen. Incarcerated
for thirty years, she has now murdered more people while in prison than she did as a free
woman.
Six weeks later, a second woman is discovered murdered in her own bed, her room
containing the same calling cards from the first: a bottle of champagne and a single
red rose. The only person who may have seen the killer: Detective D. D. Warren, who
still can’t lift her child, load her gun, or recall a single detail from the night that may
have cost her everything.
Our father was Harry Day, an infamous serial killer who buried young women beneath
the floor of our home. He has been dead for forty years. Except the Rose Killer knows
things about my father he shouldn’t. My sister claims she can help catch him. I think just
because I can’t feel pain doesn’t mean my family can’t hurt me.
D.D. may not be back on the job, but she is back on the hunt. Because the Rose Killer
isn’t just targeting lone women, he is targeting D.D. And D.D. knows there is only one
way to take him down:
Fear nothing.
MRS. LINCOLN’S RIVAL
A Novel
Jennifer Chiaverini
The New York Times bestselling author of Mrs. Lincoln’s
Dressmaker, Jennifer Chiaverini, reveals the famous
First Lady’s very public social and political contest with
Kate Chase Sprague, memorialized as “one of the most
remarkable women ever known to Washington society.”*
Kate Chase Sprague was born in 1840 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the second daughter to the
second wife of a devout but ambitious lawyer. Her father, Salmon P. Chase, rose to
prominence in the antebellum years and was appointed secretary of the treasury in
Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet, while aspiring to even greater heights.
Beautiful, intelligent, regal, and entrancing, young Kate Chase stepped into the
role of establishing her thrice-widowed father in Washington society and as a future
presidential candidate. Her efforts were successful enough that The Washington Star
declared her “the most brilliant woman of her day. None outshone her.”
None, that is, but Mary Todd Lincoln. Though Mrs. Lincoln and her young
rival held much in common—political acumen, love of country, and a resolute
determination to help the men they loved achieve greatness—they could never be
friends, for the success of one could come only at the expense of the other. When Kate
Chase married William Sprague, the wealthy young governor of Rhode Island, it was
widely regarded as the pinnacle of Washington society weddings. President Lincoln
was in attendance. The First Lady was not.
Jennifer Chiaverini excels at chronicling the lives of extraordinary yet littleknown
women through historical fiction. What she did for Elizabeth Keckley in Mrs.
Lincoln’s Dressmaker and for Elizabeth Van Lew in The Spymistress she does for Kate
Chase Sprague in Mrs. Lincoln’s Rival.
PRAISE FOR MRS. LINCOLN’S DRESSMAKER
“Jennifer Chiaverini imagines the First Lady’s most
private affairs through the eyes of an unlikely confidante.”
A Department Q Novel
Jussi Adler-Olsen
International superstar Jussi Adler-Olsen, with
more than fourteen million copies of his books
sold worldwide, returns with the fourth book
in his New York Times bestselling Department
Q series, about a perplexing cold case with
sinister modern-day consequences.
In 1987, Nete Hermansen plans revenge on those who abused her in her youth,
including Curt Wad, a charismatic surgeon who was part of a movement to sterilize
wayward girls in 1950s Denmark.
More than twenty years later, Detective Carl Mørck already has plenty on his mind
when he is presented with the case of a brothel owner, a woman named Rita, who
went missing in the eighties: New evidence has emerged in the case that destroyed the
lives of his two partners—the case that sent Carl to Department Q.
But when Carl’s assistants, Assad and Rose, learn that numerous other people
disappeared around the same weekend as Rita, Carl takes notice. As they sift through
the disappearances, they get closer and closer to Curt Wad, who is more determined
than ever to see the vision of his youth take hold and whose brutal treatment of Nete
and others like her is only one small part of his capacity for evil.
With The Purity of Vengeance, Jussi Adler-Olsen delivers a thrilling and shocking
addition to his bestselling Department Q series.
THE POLARIS PROTOCOL
A Pike Logan Thriller
Brad Taylor
Retired Delta Force commander Brad Taylor
returns with the fifth propulsive thriller in the
New York Times bestselling Pike Logan series.
Taskforce operators Pike Logan and Jennifer Cahill are used to putting their lives at
risk—and in The Polaris Protocol it’s Jennifer’s brother and countless more innocents
who face unfathomable violence and bloodshed.
Pike and Jennifer are in Turkmenistan with the Taskforce—a top-secret
antiterrorist unit that operates outside US law—when Jennifer gets a call from her
brother, Jack. Working on an investigative report into the Mexican drug cartels, Jack
Cahill has unknowingly gotten caught between two rival groups. His desperate call to
his sister is his last before he’s kidnapped.
In their efforts to rescue Jack, Pike and Jennifer uncover a plot much more
insidious than illegal drug trafficking—the cartel that put a target on Jack’s back
has discovered a GPS hack with the power to effectively debilitate the United States.
The hack allows a user to send false GPS signals, making it possible to manipulate
everything from traffic signals and banking wire transfers to cruise missiles, but only
while the system’s loophole remains in place.
With the GPS hack about to be exploited and Jack’s life at stake, Jennifer and
Pike must find a way to infiltrate the cartel’s inner circle and eliminate the impending
threat. The price of failure, for both the Taskforce and the country, is higher than ever.
ARCHETYPE
A Novel
M.D. Waters
Introducing a breathtakingly inventive futuristic
suspense novel about one woman who rebels
against everything she is told to believe.
Emma wakes in a hospital, with no memory of what came before. Her husband,
Declan, a powerful, seductive man, provides her with new memories, but her dreams
contradict his stories, showing her a past life she can’t believe possible: memories of
war, of a camp where girls are trained to be wives, of love for another man. Something
inside her tells her not to speak of this, but she does not know why. She only knows
she is at war with herself.
Suppressing those dreams during daylight hours, Emma lets Declan mold her
into a happily married woman and begins to fall in love with him. But the day Noah
stands before her, the line between her reality and dreams shatters.
In a future where women are a rare commodity, Emma fights for freedom but is
held captive by the love of two men—one her husband, the other her worst enemy. If
only she could remember which is which. . . .
The first novel in a two-part series, Archetype heralds the arrival of a truly
memorable character—and the talented author who created her.
✦ Archetype, and its sequel, Prototype, interrelated futuristic adventures narrated by
a strong, intriguing heroine called Emma, will be published in a six-month span by
Dutton in 2014.
EXCERPT | He sits in a folding chair at an angle to my tube of water, head bent forward, elbows
resting on his knees. I cannot see his face. Layers of dark blond waves curl to his chin.
“Noah,” the woman says. “You should get some rest.”
The man does not turn around, but lifts his gaze to where I float helplessly in a tank of water
I cannot escape. And I want to escape. I need to escape. But he will not let me out.
He never lets me out.
INFLUX
A Novel
Daniel Suarez
The New York Times bestselling author and “heir to
Michael Crichton” (Publishers Weekly) imagines a world
in which decades of technological advancements have
been suppressed—and are about to be unleashed—
in a massive upheaval that could destroy the planet.
Is Facebook really humankind’s most significant technological advance since the moon
landing? Or can something more sinister explain the lack of major breakthroughs
over the last forty years?
Particle physicist John Grady is ecstatic when his team finally achieves what it’s
been working toward for years: technology that makes antigravity possible. It is Nobel
Prize–caliber work, the crowning achievement of a career. He expects celebration.
Instead, his lab is locked down by a secret government group. According to the Bureau
of Technology Control, his discovery imperils the very existence of the human race.
Naturally, Grady asks why. Consequences, comes the answer: The world isn’t ready
for disruptive technologies and the unchecked population growth that would result.
When he balks, BTC throws Grady into a highly advanced prison built to hold the
world’s most intelligent scientists. With so many geniuses shackled together, can they
discover a way out of their island detention—and a way to usher our world out of its
artificial dark age—without endangering the planet for generations to come?
PRAISE FOR DANIEL SUAREZ AND HIS NOVELS
“This is the kind of mind-expanding novel that uses
entertainment to make powerful, important points about
alarming current trends; the novel as cautionary tale has rarely
been better executed. . . . Highly recommended.”
—Tim O’Reilly on Kill Decision
“Perfectly blending nail-biting suspense with accessible science,
bestseller Suarez (Daemon) establishes himself as a legitimate
heir to Michael Crichton with this gripping present-day thriller.”
ROMANCE IS MY DAY JOB
A Memoir
Patience Bloom
Who knows the ins and outs of romance better than
a Harlequin editor? A surprising and exhilarating look
into Patience Bloom’s unexpected real-life love story.
At some point, we’ve all wished romance could be more like fiction. Patience Bloom
certainly did, many times over. As a teen she fell in love with Harlequin novels and
imagined her life would turn out just like the heroines’ on the page: That shy guy
she had a crush on wouldn’t just take her out—he’d sweep her off her feet with witty
banter, quiet charm, and a secret life as a rock star. Not exactly her reality, but Bloom
kept reading books that fed her reveries.
Years later she moved to New York and found her dream job, editing romances
for Harlequin. Every day, her romantic fantasies came true—on paper. Bloom became
an expert when it came to fictional love stories, editing amazing books and learning
everything she could about the romance business. But her dating life remained
uninspired. She nearly gave up on love.
Then one day a real-life chance at romance made her wonder if what she’d been
writing and editing all those years might be true. A Facebook message from a high
school friend, Sam, sparked a relationship with more promise than she’d had in years.
But Sam lived thousands of miles away—they hadn’t seen each other in more than
twenty years. Was it worth the risk?
Finally, Bloom learned: Love and romance can conquer all.
EXCERPT | I should know about love stories since, as an editor at Harlequin, I
edit these books every single day. The mechanics of love are familiar to me.
It’s a tough job (not really), but I do it with pleasure.
I get to deal with writers who love writing about love. They send me
chocolate on Valentine’s Day, always ask about my personal life, supply me
with manuscripts to feed my book-reading obsession, and they are interesting
people. It’s sick that I get paid to do this.
You’d think I’d have this whole love thing sewn up for real. Not even close. I
do everything I’m supposed to do. I am ready for any opportunity. But then
years, decades go by and here I am. In the books, romance happens when you
least expect it, so I try not to expect it. But the more romances I edit, the more
I see my life is nothing like these books.
PATIENCE BLOOM has been a romance
editor at Harlequin for sixteen years. After
living in Connecticut, New Mexico, and
Paris, she now lives with her husband,
Sam, in New York City.
CURED
How the Berlin Patients Defeated HIV
Nathalia Holt
Could the end of the greatest pandemic of our time be
upon us? An award-winning research scientist tells the
historic story of how insights gathered from two ordinary
patients have indeed led to a practical cure for HIV.
They are each known in medical journals as the Berlin Patient. Their cures came
twelve years apart, the first in 1996 and the second in 2008. Each received his own
very different treatment in Berlin, Germany, and each result spurred a new field of
investigation, fueling innovative lines of research and sparking hope for the thirtyfour
million people currently infected with HIV. For the first time, Nathalia Holt, an
HIV fellow at the Ragon Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who has participated
in some of the most fruitful research in the field, tells the story of how we came to
arrive at this astounding and controversial turning point.
Holt explores the two men’s stories on a personal level, looking at how their
experiences have influenced HIV researchers worldwide—including one very special
young family doctor who took the time to look closely at his patients—and how they
responded to their medications.
Based on exclusive interviews with the patients and their doctors as well as her
own in-depth research, this book is an unprecedented look at how scientists pursue
their inquiries, the human impact their research has, and what is and is not working
in the relationship between Big Pharma and medical care.
EXCERPT | The baby was HIV positive. To the surprise of her physicians, the virus slowly
disappeared in the baby, becoming undetectable by day thirty. Now, two years later, doctors
felt confident in calling the child cured.
Only a few years earlier, physicians wouldn’t have dared to use the C-word. But now,
Timothy’s influence was so great in the HIV community that physicians were no longer afraid
to use the word cure. Unacknowledged but just as influential was Christian, the first Berlin
patient, the impetus behind the clinical trials testing early therapy. Here in this one child lay
the combined promise of both Berlin patients.
THE PARTY’S OVER
How the Extreme Right Hijacked
the GOP and I Became a Democrat
Charlie Crist
Charlie Crist, the former Republican governor
of Florida, spent years in the party’s inner circle.
In this no-holds-barred memoir, he shows why
he switched sides and became a Democrat.
After serving as a Republican governor—one who was on the short list for the vice
presidency in 2008—Charlie Crist made headlines when he decided to run for the
U.S. Senate as an Independent. He was on the front page again when he endorsed
President Obama in 2012 and spoke at the Democratic National Convention—and
yet again when he officially joined the Democratic Party later that year. In The Party’s
Over, he’ll make even more news when he reveals:
• The inside story of his 2010 Senate primary campaign against Marco Rubio,
where he learned exactly how vicious the Republican leadership can be.
• His journey from inner circle to persona non grata, thanks to his literal
embrace of President Obama.
• His very frank opinions on Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin,
and other top-tier Republicans.
• Why he believes that Democrats have the right vision for Florida and the
nation.
• What he’s learned as a member of both parties and why he remains convinced
that the two-party system can still work—with the right leadership.
Rather than just rehashing his career, in this book Crist offers a focused indictment
of the failings of the Republican Party, naming names and identifying where things
went wrong. The Party’s Over is as far from “politics as usual” as you can get.
I CAN HEAR YOU WHISPER
An Intimate Journey through the Science of Sound and Language
Lydia Denworth
A science writer’s poignant and fascinating look at the
science of sound and the developing brain—the result
of her own son’s inability to hear her lullabies
Lydia Denworth’s third son, Alex, was almost two when he was diagnosed with
profound and progressive hearing loss. As both a science writer and the mother
of young children, Denworth was steeped in messages about the importance of
enrichment to the developing brain. She became determined to do whatever it took
to allow Alex to hear and acquire spoken language, a quest that ultimately led to a
controversial piece of emergent “superhero technology”: the cochlear implant.
In this engrossing journey to the frontiers of science, readers will learn why sound
is so important to the developing brain, what new possibilities come from the latest
research, and what exactly is going on when you focus your hearing at a cocktail party.
Denworth goes beyond her personal experience with her son, interviewing the world’s
leading experts on child language development and hearing technology, leaders in the
deaf community, and neuroscientists.
I Can Hear You Whisper weaves together Alex’s story with the tales of two
scientific revolutions: the centuries-long quest to develop the cochlear implant and
science’s changing understanding of the brain’s remarkable plasticity—all told against
the sometimes-incendiary backdrop of identity politics and medical ethics.
✦ MSNBC’s The Cycle featured Denworth as an expert commentator on the positive
neurological effects of playing video games on young brains.
✦ Scientific American Mind featured an article by Denworth on child brain
development.
✦ The New York Times Motherlode blog made her a special guest blogger with a
three-part series on her son Alex’s hearing—she’s been invited back to promote
the book.
EXCERPT | I was making dinner while the boys played in and around the
kitchen. I heard my husband’s key in the lock. Jake and Matthew tore down
the long, narrow hall toward the door. “Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!” they cried, and
flung themselves at Mark before he was all the way inside.
I turned and looked at Alex. He was still sitting on the kitchen floor, his back
to the door, fully engaged in rolling a toy truck into a tower of blocks. A raw,
sharp ache hit my gut. Taking a deep breath, I bent down, tapped Alex on the
shoulder, and, when he looked up, pointed at the pandemonium down the
hall. His gaze followed my finger and he grinned. Leaping up, he shouted,
“Dada,” and raced into Mark’s arms.
“It’s the fluid, it’s the fluid,” I said to myself. But the next day when I went to
pick him up from day care, it happened again. I could see him across the room
as I came through the gate.
“Hi, Alex,” I called. “Hey, buddy, it’s Mommy.”
He didn’t look up or stop playing. The teacher standing next to him said,
“Alex, Mommy’s here.” Nothing. She tapped his shoulder and only then did he
look up. His face lit up when he saw me, and he came running to greet me.
The teacher and I looked at each other and I looked away, embarrassed by the
awkward intimacy of sharing this terrible moment.
