ABSTRACT<br />

With vast changes occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> South African context s<strong>in</strong>ce 1994, it is clear that <strong>the</strong> <strong>role</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> educational psychologists has also shifted. While changes have occurred, numerous<br />

difficulties still exist with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> education sector highlight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> need for educational<br />

psychologists. However, <strong>the</strong>re appears to be disagreement about how <strong>the</strong> <strong>role</strong> is perceived <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Council <strong>of</strong> South Africa, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitutions and <strong>in</strong> practice. For<br />

<strong>the</strong>se reasons, this study seeks to unpack educational <strong>psychologists'</strong> <strong>perceptions</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong><strong>the</strong>ir</strong> <strong>role</strong><br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pietermaritzburg area. A qualitative methodology is employed us<strong>in</strong>g semistructured<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews with a number <strong>of</strong> practitioners <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. The study found that <strong>the</strong> <strong>role</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> educational psychologists is complex, affected by <strong>in</strong>dividual variables and various<br />

contextual shifts and tensions. This f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g has implications for <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> educational<br />

psychologists and raises questions around <strong><strong>the</strong>ir</strong> place with<strong>in</strong> education itself.<br />
