‘i usually feel a new series happening long
before i actually do it. i can feel it coming on.
for example i heard about the riace figures
two or three years before i started doing my
own versions. i stack the idea away and draw
on it later.’ During the 1980s frink became
interested in the potential of colour. ‘i painted
some bronzes, but it was hopeless. Paint
doesn’t weather well – it soon looks tacky.
another thing is that using paint means putting
an extra skin on top of the surface, whereas
the chemicals used for patination react directly
on the surface you have.’ 73
