FOREWORD 

The catalogue you have in your hands 

presents a broad overview of the 

companies and organisations in the 

music sector and the main festivals in 

Catalonia. This publication aims not so 

much to be exhaustive (thus requiring 

many more pages), but to serve as a 

presentation for those Catalan companies 

working internationally that have 

provided their details when requested 

by Catalan! Arts. 

The catalogue is intended as a useful 

and practical tool for professionals in 

the UK, France, Germany, the United 

States, Japan and other countries where 

Catalan music companies do business. 

As in previous editions, the catalogue 

reflects the major changes in the music 

industry in recent years. Whereas the 

contents of the catalogue initially 

focused on record companies, it is now 

complemented by music companies 

involved in other areas of the business. 

Many of these companies do not work 

exclusively in just one area of business, 

as the development of the sector has required 

them to take on various functions 

at the same time (labels, artist management, 

marketing managers, etc.). The 

guide identifies these business activities, 

divided into two main sections: music 

companies (labels, managers, bookers, 

media, distributors, venues and others) 

and international festivals. 

Publication of this catalogue is part 

of the policy of Catalan! Arts and its 

Catalan! Music brand to offer tools that 

help promote Catalan cultural businesses. 

Publishing guides and directories 

is one aspect of this policy, along with 

release of CD sampler compilations of 

the most relevant new developments in 

Catalan record production in the fields 

of electronic music, jazz, pop rock and 

world music. The main objective is to 

promote the international presence 

of music made in Catalonia and the 

professionals and companies behind it. 

For this reason, all these materials are 

also available on the website

information on the work of Catalan 

businesses and artists around the world.

Catalonia

Unavoidably, the general trend of economic crisis and 

recession affecting many European Union countries 

has impacted on the music industry in Catalonia. 

In the field of live music, the situation led to fewer 

contracts, concerts and lower attendance in 2011 (the 

last year with available data). Despite this, it is also 

true that there were a few positive signs to suggest the 

hope that this was the beginning of the end. 

The phenomenon of festivals and their capacity to 

draw the public both domestically and abroad, as 

well as the slight increase in turnover in the record 

industry, which has also increased production, may 

be possible indicators of a recovery. However, above 

all, the application of 21% VAT to all products and activities 

in the music business is likely to be a serious 

blow that threatens this recovery. These difficulties do 

not hide a reality that should not be forgotten: 92% 

of Catalans state that music is the cultural asset they 

consume most regularly, according to data from the 

Barometer of Communication and Culture. 

REACTION 

TO THE 

RECESSION 

The consequences of the recession in 

the music industry required a reaction 

that gained timid but irreversible 

momentum in 2011. Both industry 

agents and musicians started reassessing 

new business and operational 

models to enable them to adapt to 

new times and reverse the situation 

that could be described as catastrophic. 

The conversion of record labels to the 

anti-piracy cause and the fall in record 

sales, combined with a recession in live 

music due to the systemic and political 

crisis in public institutions, caused by the 

lack of resources, forced promoters and 

creators to look for more private sector 

involvement and put into practice new 

business models. 

The instruments provided by new 

technologies are an essential tool in 

facilitating this transformation, by their 

practical incorporation into daily work. 

Faced with a reality that requires the dynamics 

of the live music business to be 

reassessed, festivals have proven to be a 

god-send, acting as showcases to keep 

public interest alive, while providing a 

potential launch pad for future propo-

sals. This function falls explicitly within 

the responsibility of professional spaces 

and requires the initial step of reinforcing 

models such as the traditional 

music clubs or concert venue networks 

in Catalonia as spaces for creation and 

capturing new audiences. 

From another perspective, the positive 

recovery in the record industry is a 

reward for its capacity to reinvent itself 

and make more from artistic management 

and new sources of income 

such as publishing rights, as well as for 

the confidence shown by a number of 

creators who have sought alternative 

sources of funding to public money. One 

of these forms of reinvention involves 

concentrating production, promotion 

and distribution in the same team. 

LIGHT AND 

DARKNESS IN 

LIVE MUSIC 

Around 7.5 million spectators attended 

over 13,000 musical performances in 

Catalonia throughout 2011, according 

to estimates by the Professional 

Association of Agents, Promoters and 

Managers of Catalonia (ARC). These 

figures indicate a further contraction in 

the live music market, whose growth in 

turnover was thanks only to festival and 

large concert promoters. This is the only 

positive note in the balances presented 

by the General Society of Authors and 

Publishers (SGAE), which indicate a 

drop of 8.2% in the rights generated 

by modern music concerts in Catalonia, 

further confirmed by the indicators of 

Musicat, the Association of Professional 

Musicians in Catalonia, showing a 20% 

decrease in its members’ turnover. 

In 2011, the fall in turnover was across 

the board, ranging from 20% to 50% 

depending on the type of company and 

its specialisation, with the exception of 

a few promoters who achieved a positive 

balance thanks to festivals or large 

concerts. The perception of the situation 

justifies the only positive figure among 

all the variables in play. This is an

estimate by the ARC of overall turnover 

generated by its members for the year, 

which is around €79.4 million, a 3.3% 

increase over 2010. Most of this was 

generated in Catalonia (78.5%), while 

the rest was from the Spanish market. 

The ARC suggests that this growth is 

most probably due to the rise in average 

ticket prices, with the increase in VIP 

tickets offering additional services, and 

the fact that government agencies have 

started transferring part of the business 

to professional companies in the sector. 

Similarly, the ARC attributes the 12.8% 

drop in turnover from concerts (from 

15,220 to 13,628) and the 28% drop 

in audience to the fact that there have 

been considerably fewer free concerts 

and low-cost performances by new 

groups or less commercial or mediafriendly 

music, as these have been 

hardest hit by the recession. Conversely, 

better established groups have maintained 

or even improved their status, and 

macro festivals like Primavera Sound, 

Sónar, Cap Roig, Peralada, Mil·lenni, 

Jazz de Barcelona or Guitarra were 

resounding successes. 

The figures showing the dramatic drop 

in audience and concerts for 2011 

provided by ARC are confirmed in 

the study published by the SGAE. In 

absolute terms, the number of paying 

spectators in Catalonia decreased by 

12.3%. This decrease, from 5.29 to 4.64 

million spectators (a drop of 650,000), 

is on a par with levels four or five years 

ago. With respect to royalties, trends in 

Catalonia are similar to those for Spain 

overall: the €59.4 million collected in 

2011, 19% of the total for Spain, represents 

a decrease of 6.24%. In the section 

specifically for music, income from 

royalties from popular music concerts 

and festivals (pop, rock, jazz, etc.) once 

again fell: 8.15% less than in 2010, 

from €4.8 to 4.4 million. The same trend 

was more acute in other genres, such 

as classical concerts, where there was 

a sharp 21.8% drop in royalties (with 

respect to an income of €365.911) or 

dance orchestras, with a major decrease 

of 12.1% in income from royalties (with 

respect to an income of €883,727). 

Given this scenario, music festivals have 

become the main source of income for 

the sector and for attracting the public. 

The audiences at the main Catalan 

events have grown and many have 

looked for sponsorship. Attendance at 

the 20 largest festivals in Catalonia 

increased by 3.4% in 2011, to 831,248 

spectators (from 804,139 the year before). 

Furthermore, their capacity to draw 

spectators continued to grow, reinforcing 

the scene and finding new formulas 

for cooperation. Much more than events 

for the general public, the festivals have 

proved a god-send in providing meeting 

points for professionals in the sector 

to project ideas, discuss proposals and 

promote new artists in an increasingly 

global market. The trend among professionals 

has created a new platform 

for analysis (although still lacking data 

on results) along with a business space 

aimed at showcasing proposals that 

open up new markets. 

Barcelona holds a key position in the 

festival calendar in Catalonia. The close 

to one million people attending the 

50 or so popular music festivals of all 

kinds and trends (from pop to jazz and 

on to folk) in the Catalan capital in 

2011 marked a 13.1% increase over 

the previous year. This represents a 

first-order cultural and tourist activity 

with an economic impact of over €150 

million a year, which, combined with 

regular programming and contracting of 

artists, makes the live music industry the 

leading cultural driving force and asset 

in Barcelona. 

The data suggest regular programming 

is withstanding the recession. In 2011, 

Catalan concert venues scheduled 

around 4,000 concerts with over one 

million spectators, ending the season 

with an increase in concerts (9.6%) and 

a relative drop in spectators (-7.8%). 

These data are provided by the Catalan 

Concert Venues’ Association (ASACC), 

which brings together over 50 member 

facilities; although these are not the 

main source of income, consumption by 

the public dropped considerably.

POSITIVE 

DEVELOPMENT OF THE 

RECORD INDUSTRY 

The Catalan record industry started 

to recover in 2010 thanks to the new 

Catalan pop; this recovery continued in 

2011 in terms of sales with a turnover 

of €16.3 million, an increase of 5.1%. 

A new record in volume of releases 

in Catalan was also established, with 

605 titles in all styles, while the sector 

generated 2% more in royalties from 

recordings. This clear positive trend 

differed considerably from that of the 

Spanish record industry as a whole, 

where the €148.6 million in income from 

sales represented a decrease in 10.8% 

compared to 2010. Turnover for Catalan 

record companies rose from €15.6 

million in 2010 to €16.3 million in 2011, 

of which €14.6 million was from physical 

sales and €1.7 million from digital sales. 

Although the €8.3 million turnover of 

Blanco y Negro, the Catalan record 

company representing 51% of the pie, 

represented a drop of just 1% in their 

income, the good results of DiscMedi 

(€3.7 million), Música Global (850,000) 

and Satélite K (€459,000), among other 

labels in the Association of Record 

Producers and Publishers of Catalonia 

(APECAT), made this increase possible. 

Furthermore, the trend was reversed, 

generating a 2% increase in income 

from royalties from recorded music in 

Catalonia, quantified at €6.2 million. 

In 2011, there was positive confirmation 

of another variable: the total of 605 

releases in 2011 with at least one song 

in Catalan established a new record. 

This represented an increase of 2.4% 

over 2010, which saw the first signs of 

recovery with a 10% increase. In terms 

of styles and genres, the largest increase 

was in the field providing the most titles: 

pop rock. The 253 discs attributable 

to this genre represent a 9.5% increase 

over the previous year. Other genres that 

experienced an increase include music 

by singer-songwriters, with 108 new 

releases and an 8% increase, as well 

as the increase in folk and new music, 

with 96 records released—an increase 

of 4.3%. Genres that maintained the 

same position as the previous year were 

jazz and blues and children and family 

records. Jazz consolidated its position as 

the second most productive genre in the 

country with 114 releases. Furthermore,

in 2011 there were 84 releases from 

classical music labels. 

The difference between the good 

results for Catalonia and the drop in the 

Spanish market would have been even 

greater if not for the cushioning effect of 

the digital market. The 20% drop in physical 

sales in Spain was not such a blow 

thanks to the 19.9% increase in digital 

sales. However, these equal percentages 

in no way reflect the same volume of 

business. Physical sales dropped from 

€127.8 million to €102.2 million and 

digital sales increased from 38.7 million 

to 46.4 million. In the Catalan market, 

these variables showed an increase 

of 4.9% in physical sales, from €13.9 

to €14.6 million, and a 7% increase in 

digital sales, from 1.6 to 1.7 million. 

With respect to the different formats 

of the physical market, there were significant 

drops in singles (-75.7%), CDs 

(-16.9%) and DVD and VHS (-69.4%), 

while there was a 45.4% increase in 

vinyl LPs. In the Catalan language, 2011 

also broke the record in new formats 

and 32 DVDs and 14 LPs were released, 

increases of 23% and 16.7% respectively 

over the previous year. The gradual 

increase in consumption of digital music 

was notable with increases of 8.1% in 

downloads, 16.7% in mobiles and a 

highly significant 75.8% in music streaming, 

a sign of how new technologies 

are gradually forcing the record industry 

to adapt to the new times, if they are to 

stay in business. 

According to the yearly Promusicae 

report, the record market in Spain, in 

both physical and digital formats, is 

currently controlled by the four largest 

multinationals in the sector, Universal 

Music (29.6%), Sony Music (25.1%), 

Warner Music Group (18.6%) and EMI 

Music (15.3%). Little more than 10% of 

the remaining business is shared among 

independent labels. Within this space, 

Catalan record labels already represent 

65% of the independent Spanish market. 

The most relevant labels in terms 

of market share are Blanco y Negro, 

Divucsa, DiscMedi, Música Global and 

Satélite K, as well Picap, Kaspa Music, 

RGB Suports, Open, BakRobber and 

Propaganda pel Fet!. 

A COUNTRY 

THAT LISTENS 

TO MUSIC

Some 92% of Catalans regularly listen 

to music and 31% went to a concert in 

the last year, according to data from the 

2011 Barometer of Communication and 

Culture for the population aged over 14. 

With respect to music in Catalan, consumption 

increased by 3%, especially 

over the radio, while concert attendance 

fell by almost 12%. The data from 

this survey also show that the typical 

music lover and concert goer is young, 

aged 20 to 24, employed, middle-class, 

bilingual, with a higher education and 

living in a mid-sized city in the regions 

of Barcelona or Tarragona. 

The analysis indicates that there was a 

significant 3.6% increase in Catalans 

listening to music every day: from 

51.6% in 2010 to 55.2% in 2011. 

Furthermore, some 25% (2.1% fewer) 

listened to music more than once a 

week and 7.5% (1.2% more) listened at 

least once every seven days. 

The radio is the main source for listening 

to music; the style is still most frequently 

pop rock, with around 70%, albeit 

with a drop of 0.7%. There was also 

a 3% drop in consumption of melodic 

and singer-songwriter music, which 

maintained its second place in order of 

preference with 40%. By contrast, there 

were increases in the consumption of 

classical music, from 20.3% to 22.9%, 

electronic music (15.2% to 16.6%), 

jazz, blues and country (from 14% to 

15.9%), folk and ethnic music (12.7% 

to 15.7%, the biggest percentage 

increase in all music genres), alternative 

music (from 11% to 11.4%), hip-hop 

(from 10.1% to 10.4%) and soul-funk 

(from 9.1% to 10.9%). However, salsa 

and Latin music and Flamenco dropped 

by 2%, with a smaller drop in rock and 

heavy metal. 

The language in which music is most 

commonly consumed in Catalonia continues 

to be Spanish (52.2%), despite a 

6% drop compared to 2010, followed 

by English and other languages (42%), 

which rose 6.1%, while Catalan music 

saw a 3% increase in listeners from 

9.7% to 12.4%, a minority figure but 

one that has increased three-fold in four 

years. 

The study is particularly striking where it 

establishes Catalan music consumption 

in the last year at a decisive 91.9%, 3% 

higher than in 2010. This variable heads 

the list above books read (60.5%), cinema 

goers (35.2%) or visits to exhibitions 

(32%). In fifth place was concert-going, 

with 31% of Catalans going to a live 

concert in 2011.

A distinctive characteristic of Boileau is the high

La Mà de Guido started its journey in 1988 as 

an editor of unpublished printed sheet music by 

Catalan and Spanish composers. In order to give 

voice to these scores, in 1994 it started its activity 

as a record label. To this day it has released more 

than 120 CDs devoted to the recuperation of 

unknown or scarcely-known Iberian music. In 

its catalogue we may find the first recordings of 

Spanish composers from all periods. At the same 

time, the company founded in 1996 the label Ars 

Harmonica, in whose catalogue we may find all 

kinds of classical music. It also includes several CDs 

devoted to jazz and Catalan folk music. However, 

its main focus has been placed on contemporary 

Catalan and Spanish music.

The Traditional and Folk Music International Festival 

of Vilanova i la Geltrú (Festival Internacional 

de Música Popular i Tradicional de Vilanova i la 

Geltrú) has been hold since 1981 all along the 

third weekend of the month of July. It is the oldest 

festival devoted to ethnic and roots music in Spain 

having been far ahead of this time. A long list of 

artists from the Catalan Countries and all over the 

world has paid a visit to the Festival throughout 

its history. Some of the names on the roll have 

become internationally well-known and famous 

artists. With about thirty performances, the Festival 

offers different timetables daily from morning to 

night, different audiences are gathered, both locals 

and visitors, and intergenerational audience.
